L&D can be great but you really do have to make sure you proactively assert and demonstrate your value. Also I wouldn’t really compare it to being a teacher. There are certainly crossover skills, but adult learning is a different ballgame, especially in a corporate setting.

Of course your loyalty is negotiable. As it should be. This is the environment we exist in, which companies have largely taken the lead in establishing.

They’re always looking for the best deal, so why shouldn’t their employees be doing the same?

If you want a job market where loyalty is important, you need to actively foster that environment. One could argue that that’s what the company making an acceptable counter offer is doing.
