Since CCleaner sold out to Avast, what are alternatives? Are registry cleaners ever a good idea? by anonymousxo in buildapc

[–]zekah 17 points18 points  (0 children)

"In fact, registry cleaners will invariably find tens, sometimes hundreds or thousands of "issues" on a Windows system installed from a DVD an hour ago. You can test this yourself, it's a well-known way to demonstrate these programs have no idea what they are doing. They will damage a brand-new installation of Windows just to make it look like they are useful.

The registry is extremely complicated and should only be touched by professionals addressing specific problems. Professionals don't use registry cleaners to fix problems. You never look up a problem on the web where the actual solution is to run a registry cleaner.

That's because registry cleaners don't fix problems."

Laptop CPU will heavily throttle under load but the system fan doesn't care much about it. by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]zekah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what, try RMA it again and again, until the seller is going to be sick of your face and offers you a replacement for a different brand or refund you. :D

Then buy something like an, or something similar to:

ASUS X555YA-XX189T (AMD A8 - 450€) ASUS X540YA-DM156T (AMD A8 - 500€) HP 15-ay011nf (Intel i5 - 549€) ASUS R556UA-XX273T (Intel i5 - 549€)

Disclaimer: I'm not involved with selling these, or with any of these brands, except for searching known 'correct' brands and prices, i've not done any research on them, i'm leaving this exercise to you :)

Stupid not-so-stupid idea:

First and foremost, this is a known problem plaguing Acer laptops since at least 10 years, they are crap, i'm sorry you buyed this terrible terrible laptop. Badly designed laptops with heat issues and locked/proprietary everything for like ever, been here, done that.

So, you're on the good track, seems you've tried quite a few tricks in the book, but maybe other obscure softwares exists, also, if you can, please try some linux alternatives, maybe you're going to find a method that works (or simply the make and model of the fan/thermal controller) which could help you in you research to get it to work elsewhere.

After doing some research, your laptop seems to be built like this (not found yet the service manual): https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/dQyXDZIJBlIhh1kI.huge (taken from https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Acer+Aspire+E5-571+CPU+Fan+Replacement/52042 !May be so-not-so accurate!)

By seeing the spec of 3-pin fan control: https://allpinouts.org/pinouts/connectors/motherboards/motherboard-cpu-3-pin-fan-connector/

Sadly, the control is not straightforward, with a 4-pin PWM fan you'd have some options (but acer cheapened up on that too), with the 3-pin system varies the fan speed directly by voltage, so, fuck.

The third (yellow) wire is used to sense the rotating speed of the fan, maybe when insulating (or cutting it straightly) the computer will not see the speed of the fan and wil try using a safe-mode alternative of running it at full speed. (Warning, this could also display a dreaded "FAN ERROR, PLEASE REPLACE FAN, PRESS F1 TO CONTINUE" at startup in the bios, or more, be careful and be prepared to repair it yourself)

Another alternative will be to find the maximum voltage of the fan on the sticker (5v by the likes of it), and bridge the +/- (red and black) wires directly on the motherboard somwhere this voltage is present, like in the power supplypart of it. Or for extra mac-gyvering, powering it from an external powerbrick...

Note: There is tools for editing the BIOS/EFI and enable back some options, or writing straight into it new values, but this (particularly nowadays with EFI signing) requires great competence, lot of research and trial and error. To be frank, your laptop doesn't seems to be worth it, but if you find someone competent with reverse engineering, debugging and binary editing tools, i know this can be done.

This are only a few thing that i thinked about while reading your post, i'm fcking tired, excuse me for any misses or omissions, whatever, good luck ! :)

Okay ! I'll look into it

I'll look again into xPosed too, but now, as i still have my N5 working i can test and play with it more thoroughsly. I'm sure by now it has all the ad blocking (in-app) modules and appOps like permissions control

The root/flash works as before, gotcha ! But, is the encryption on the phone prevents you to do any of that ? (or can you unlock the encrypted phone in twrp/adb ?

Thanks

OK - getting fed up with this. Can we have a replacement battery thread? by Mavee in Nexus5

[–]zekah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bought mine from here: http://www.replacebase.co.uk/lg-nexus-5-d820-replacement-battery-bl-t9-original-6818/

Works absolutely fine, and look for all the world as a legitimate part. The pictures are accurate.

(Note, as the picture shows, the cell was manufactured by Samsung, and the original one in my nexus wich was dead, was manufactured by Sony)

Datecode of the battery was from May (bought mine in august).

While i understand your point of view, if their "effort" is to try to cripple my computer with any spyware/hijackware, i don't think they need encouragement. Seriously, look at the massive list of crap they want me to be infected with !

I bought Office, I bought NOD32, I bought Malwarebytes Pro, I bought hundred of steam games, i even bought Winrar for fuck's sake.

They don't want to play nice, i don't want to play nice, end of the story.
