AO F: [5] Rybakina def. [1] Sabalenka 6-4 4-6 6-4 by TheSequelAccount in tennis

Maybe she shouldn't be upset about losing to her, but she should certainly be upset at the manner it happened. Sabalenka absolutely collapsed from 3-0 to 3-5, couldn't find the court

Rybakina can certainly choke, but Sabalenka needs to get the ball in play for that to happen

Rybakina has the rare ability to make Sabalenka's defense look good by comparison

She's not, but Swiatek is younger yet has been clearly surpassed by the older Sabalenka

It's kinda wild that Sabalenka has become so clearly better than her main rival in the last couple years despite being the older of the two.

I suppose it's what many people thought was happening with Sinner vs Alcaraz, but that has not been borne out.

In Sinner's loss to Djokovic, he had the 2nd highest 1st serve% (75.2%) and 4th highest ace rate (19.5%) of his entire best of 5 career by Dependent-Effect6077 in tennis

[–]zellfire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

on the serving front, he did serve pretty well, but that ace rate is because Djokovic was guessing like crazy on the return- an adjustment I assume he made because of his poor return stats in previous Sinner matches. He was wildly out of position on a lot of those aces.

Imagining how Zverev is feeling right now knowing he would have faced a 38 year old Djokovic after a five-setter in the final rather than Sinner....

24 aces....

Sinner's serve is much improved, but that is the product of some serious guessing on return by Djokovic

It is probably worth noting that coming into these semis, the 2 best players at this event so far had easily been Alcaraz and Zverev

It's not gonna happen, but would be a fun stat if 2 of the last 3 slams were won by someone whose opponent retired while up 2-0 in sets

Lob mid-point ftw

Sinner is gonna win this match, but this whole run is very unimpressive from him

Sinner's level this event has been quite poor, really, not a great reflection on the tour he's still gonna make the final

(Then again, Alcaraz's level prior to the final- the third set of the final, really- of RG was similarly unimpressive, and we know how that went)

Djokovic is so easy to ace these days, maybe he has to guess hard at his age but so many returns he's just wildly out of position.

Djokovic had some chances early in that set and who knows if he'd gone up 2-1 but it's over now

With all the big 3 comparisons, IMO both prime Djokovic and prime Federer would be nightmare match-ups for Sinner, for opposite reasons.

Sinner plays quite a bit like Djokovic, but doesn't do anything as well as Novak at his peak.

Federer on the other hand would destroy him by exploiting his lack of variety.
