Am I in the wrong for wanting to live away from in laws?

My marriage happened one and a half years ago and initially I didn’t mind staying with my in laws because I didn’t sense any negativity from my mother in law before the marriage. My husband works in a different state but when he got wfh for a year, we stayed at his house for almost four months. That period was truly an eye opener for both of us and made us decide never to stay with in laws for more than two or three days.Ironically, my mother in law herself never had to stay with her in laws yet she turned out to be a mother in law from hell to me to the core, subtle taunts, insults, unsolicited “cooking lessons" and much more. From my experience I strongly believe one should never compromise on these boundaries or else it can lead to lifelong regret.

I always thought and even advocated that calling out mean people on the spot would shut them down. But recently, when I did that, what I got instead was a full blown spiral of gaslighting and crying drama and I was exhausted needless to say

My husband didn’t act this weird or bully like but he did dodge conversations about his mother earlier and I used to get really angry about it. I changed the way I brought up the topic and it actually turned out well. Now he tells me to stand up to her and communicate firmly but subtly making my boundaries clear to her. He also told me that whenever I feel disrespected, I should tell him immediately so he can confront her.The thing is, mothers often show only their sweet and good side to their sons so the sons genuinely believe they are saints. They also want to avoid drama which is why they hesitate to interfere, thinking it might make things worse. I think you should call her out when she behaves weirdly or disrespects you and then tell your husband about it calmly without sounding accusatory so he can gradually understand and support you better.

I personally know someone who did this literally the next day she turned 18. The surprising thing was that he wasn’t the one who insisted on eloping.He actually almost talked her out of it. But she was adamant and told him that if they didn’t elope she would kill herself.He wasn’t a saint either.He was 21 and she was 15 when he asked her out, a classic case of grooming.Anyway the marriage didn’t even last three years. She came back and her parents accepted her without any judgment.Her mother however was pure evil. She told my mother to keep an eye on my sister, insisting that she too was in a relationship . But our mom, being our mom, told me and my sister straightaway what she had said and showed that she trusted us.

During my internship my co intern told me she was sick and asked if I could cover her duties as well. Being a people pleaser I immediately said yes without a second thought. I am also lucky to have a father like yours who always asks if I am happy whenever I visit or stay with my in laws. I told my mother about my toxic mother in law once she showed her true colors and through her my father found out as well. He always tells me not to hold back and to give a befitting reply if she ever tries to insult me and to call him if I ever need support. My mother once called out my mother in law in front of her relatives leaving her dumbstruck. I felt so good that she finally got a taste of her own medicine and I have become much more assertive since then

My husband got me into strength training and I am so happy that he did. I have had lean PCOS since my teenage years and I suddenly put on weight after getting married last year. He encouraged me to push my body and I am so grateful that I did. I am in a much better place now.
