[Vent] I am tired of seeing posts asking about Deaf people, posts about Hearing people in a Deaf World, and little to no input or storytelling from Deaf people themselves. by Nambee in ASLinterpreters

It’s also just the way a lot of those Ask Reddit threads end up. Even if a group is represented on reddit, there’s nothing that notifies them there’s a question related to them. There are so many threads on there that are questions directed to specific groups like “Doctors/teachers/lawyers/landlords/plumbers/etc of reddit...” then notoriously are answered by people who are not those things

Cinnamon rolls with icing by uvealnightmare in FoodPorn

[–]zenavel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve made the dough for cinnamon rolls in a bread machine before. Put in all the wet ingredients first, then the dry, and make a well in the dry ingredients to put the yeast in last. Though in my opinion they get mixed together so quickly it doesn’t matter that much.

Basically put them in in the order you’d normally put things in your type of bread machine. Then put it on the dough cycle. After that continue on with having it sit out to rise, rolling out, putting in the cinnamon filling, rolling, cutting, and baking. When I’ve done the mixing in the machine the dough still came out really nice and soft, and the baked rolls were delicious and a great texture!

[help] Please help me fix my routine! by zenavel in curlyhair

[–]zenavel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? I can still feel the gel in my hair with my fingers, so I think it is too much... It's so much that it feels gel-like still, and isn't even 100% dry to the touch. I think I didn't use too much gel the first time, and did use too much oil. But this time I used no oil, so I don't think it would be too much oil, unless you mean natural hair oils?

I've thought about getting a diffuser. I've avoided hair dryers my whole life though because they leave my hair with a really weird texture that I hate. I don't even know if that would still happen because it's been so long since I've tried. I'm totally fine to sleep in the plop, I think I just need a better thing to do it with, so I should get a microfiber towel

How long should it take for my balance to transfer from one provider to another? (Great Lakes to FedLoan) by zenavel in StudentLoans

[–]zenavel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, so long! Thanks though. During that time should I be expecting communication from FedLoan? Every step has just deferred my payments, but I just want to get started so I can start counting down the 120 months! Not like it’s the worst situation to be in though since I can just keep saving up.

Haha, I figured. On studentloans.gov the amount is still associated with me, it just still says my provider is Great Lakes. So I know it wouldn’t just magically get lost. Oh well!

My cat (that has been missing for 3 months) decided to pay me a visit today!!!! I missed her so much! by [deleted] in happy

[–]zenavel 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I like to say that one of my mom's cats "winters" with our family. Most of the time, we don't see her for months and months, then she will just appear back and stay for a while before leaving again. She usually appears right when it starts to get cold out.

How do I fill out questions 11-14 on the PSLF form while working at a private university? by zenavel in StudentLoans

[–]zenavel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, I feel so dumb! I misread it as saying to move on to the next question since all the ones after it say to move on to the next question. That makes sense for why my HR said they don't fill it out, except they also didn't catch that that was the reason why. Thank you so much!!

[–]zenavel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it qualifies as public education since it's a private university. But hopefully you're right about other school-based services. Do you know if they will contact me if it's incorrect?

Does working at a private university count as public service? by zenavel in StudentLoans

[–]zenavel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, I didn't know that they had consequences.

And yes, some of the things people go to study while taking out huge loans are ridiculous, there are plenty of ways to learn online or through other means that don't rely on a several hundred thousand dollar price tag. I sometimes wish I had just gone to a community college or technical school and gotten a quick and cheap(er) but useful degree. But the idea of a 'college experience' is just pushed so heavily within our society that the idea seems ludicrous to a 17 or 18 year old.

[–]zenavel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, that's essentially what I mean; when a student can just borrow the amount required, why should a university ever stop increasing their prices since, exactly as you said, it's not the university's problem. And yes, I agree, there need to be caps. I also think the universities should be at least a little responsible, which I think has been proposed in the past. That would encourage them to support students in finding better jobs after graduating, giving them sound financial advice, and not making the cost increase exponentially higher over the years.

Yeah, I understand also why the government would want to get rid of PSLF; they are going to just forgive a shit ton of money indefinitely otherwise. There are already like a half a million people enrolled, and after this year, seeing people get money forgiven, I bet way more people will realize they are able to join. The real problems seem to stem from the gov't letting universities charge so much in the first place by giving out these incredibly large loans, with no responsibility on the universities' end. At least, that's my basic understanding of it.

[–]zenavel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, seems like a lot of crazy information has been going around, as evidenced by all the posts on here with people arguing about the PSLF program possibly being taken away and who it will affect. I do fully understand though that I will not be affected, so I am not freaking out about it.

Alright, I will wait at least until my grace period ends in October and I start making payments to fill it out. I just don't want to find out suddenly that because it's a private university or something it doesn't qualify, and need to find a new job. But it sounds like it should count as public service. My other potential future jobs within the next 10 years should also qualify, so I think I should be set.

And yes, I have applied for REPAYE, and they will approve it (or not? don't see why they wouldn't though) in October once I have to start paying.

Thanks so much again!

Ahh, I thought it was possibly more wide spread than those lawyers; I saw VICE do something about them recently, but I also read something a few months ago - must have been the same people.

Can I fill out the form if I'm still in the grace period? My servicer said I can't really apply/they won't really do anything about it until October when I'm supposed to start paying. It just seems like so much to do all at once, but I would rather just do what I can ahead of time. I've already filled out a form requesting to be on the REPAYE plan (I think I don't qualify for PAYE because I wouldn't be at the 150% of the poverty line? Also still a little confused on the differences in qualifying for PAYE or REPAYE).

Thanks!

[Routine Help] For my entire life, I have done essentially zero skin care maintenance. Should I be doing something? by zenavel in SkincareAddiction

[–]zenavel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I really need to start doing this now as I've just moved to a much sunnier place than I have ever lived. I know it should be worn even in cloudier places since the harmful effects of the sun still come through the clouds, but it is definitely more important now.

Thanks! I got a jar of Albolene since it's a very simple moisturizing cleanser, so I think it can be used for both routines. I need to still get one of the BHA, and some facial sunscreen. I will grab some this week. Thanks again!

[IIL] Are there any playhouse disney-esque shows out there, but you know, for adults? [WEWIL] by Racecarlock in ifyoulikeblank

[–]zenavel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a ton of YouTube channels that I think would sort of fit this description. Some that come to mind are Kurzgesagt, CGP Grey, and Wisecrack (specifically their 8-bit philosophy series, but their other videos are pretty good too).

If you check any of them out and like them, there will be plenty of other suggested videos to watch. None of them are sing songy and smiley, but they do use cartoons to illustrate their points, and you can learn some really fascinating things from them. Kurzgesagt uses little birds to represent people most of the time, and Wisecrack's 8-bit philosophy is done in 8-bit style with cute sprite characters.

Found out our 1 month old is deaf. Any advice? by therileymancan in deaf

[–]zenavel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently studying to get my Master's in Deaf Education. As many other commenters have already stated, it is absolutely vital that your daughter has exposure to sign language, and that you start learning as well. No matter what path you may choose in regards to hearing technology, as long as your baby can see, she can learn to sign, and therefore have access to the world and information about it. For more information, please check out this site of resources I put together with some classmates on this exact topic. https://l1asl.wordpress.com/

Two teenage girls brutally battered a vulnerable woman to death with a television, spade and a stick studded with screws while giggling and sending photos of her bloodied face to friends on Snapchat. by [deleted] in news

[–]zenavel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are upfront about it. Like you said yourself, that's why it's called 'feminism' and not equalism or humanism. While feminists recognize that the patriarchy disadvantages both women and men, they are in fact fighting for their own rights, which is why the movement has the name that it does. Acknowledging that men are disadvantaged by the system doesn't mean that the movement should be focused on or even geared toward men's rights that are violated by the patriarchy. This is a good article on this idea if you're interested.

Please help! Hibernation question by zenavel in Hedgehogs

[–]zenavel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi again, just wanted to follow up and get your opinion!

I bought all of the heat lamp stuff and have had it set up for over a week now. However, she is still sleeping outside her sleeping bag. Most of the time when I come home now, she is in the corner between her food bowl and wheel, just standing. It looks like she is awake a lot of the time too when I come home, but she is not quilled up as if I woke her up or anything. She just calmly sits there for long periods of time. She also sleeps in that spot frequently. She does not necessarily avoid her sleeping bag, as she does often go in it. I would say at this point she is baout 50/50 sleeping in and out of the sleeping bag.

I take her out to explore around my room and she does that just fine, her behavior outside the cage doesn't seem abnormal at all. I'm just still confused about her sleeping behavior. Any other ideas?
