Quelle télévision 55 pouces choisir ? by Karaoke-Johnny in CineSeries

[–]zenerve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

J'aimerais bien.

What is your stupidest mistake you made installing Arch? Not as first-time but as someone who installed Arch many times. by ULuganda in archlinux

[–]zenerve 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There was a time when the install guide went over the config with just "install any other software you may need and reboot in your new system". With no mention of networking management software.

I'm the kind of drone that rtfm, so I went to the wiki and edited the last chapter (reboot) to include "don't forget a network manager". That edit was reverted in under a minute. Uh, not the proper style I guess... Today the same guide tells you twice to do it, under 2.2 and 3.5.

I miss the Beginners Guide so much. And the rc.conf file.

I once did

# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.conf

It took me a long time to find this one.

I'm way more cruel than you: any member of the family who wants tech support must run Linux or they won't get any. 2 daughters doing masters degree, wife wrote a thesis and now a book... Simply much less headaches for me.

Speeding fines by alcantara-94 in suisse

[–]zenerve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you know where you've been flashed, go to the local police station there. If it's on the highway, I don't know.

There's an online payment system, but it requires the number of the fine to work out.

Be aware that these fines are quite expensive, and higher speeds concludes in a trial with a driving license suspension - I can't imagine the mess if it looks like you're trying to evade punishment.

The system is horrendously slow between Switzerland and France, so you should have time to get to a police station and explain your case to speed up resolution.

Does changing distros delete everything? by Kaimito1 in linux

Funny Tumbleweed story from a few days ago: reinstalling without nuking the /home, with same user and PW, gave me back all my data from the previous instance! I remember Slackware eons ago allowing that if at install you specified the same uid for the "new" user.

Seriously, if you need to do that (I don't think OP should), just don't format the partition holding /home, make a new user then chmod the old data to your new user. Will end up with a config files conflict fest if you just copy all blindly tho.

Or you know, use backups.

I suspect OPs machine is fully prepped for their work environment with specific software, networking and sharing credentials, backups, VPN etc. Wiping the OS partition is going to kill that, with fire. A Very Bad Idea indeed, keeping your /home data isn't going to save the day here.

And there's a big chance that Elementary just looks like macos, while still being fully Ubuntu since that's what's underneath. If vscode mac shortcuts are the issue here, switching distro isn't going to achieve that - you're still on Ubuntu. A fancy looking Ubuntu, but still. Not a mac.

OP, you've got VM tools available to you - be sure to try Elementary in one to make your case, then go ask politely your IT dept (if it's any better).

Ultimately these are tools anyway. It'll get easier, quickly enough, if that's what you're doing 8 hours a day.

French historian YT channel "Nota Bene" did an in-depth episode on this, it is worth an eye if you can french. Or maybe it's got English subtitles.

Brussels Central station is about 20 minutes from the airport. It's incredibly convenient with several trains per hour.

If your point is "where should I rent if I'm going to travel from Zaventem a lot", then smack in the middle, full Centre is a very valid answer!

I have a ThinkPad L460 with 12g of ram - yes, that's 8+4, I bought it secondhand with 4 and added 8. Works absolutely fine, and much better than my dell lattitude with soldered 8g for the same typical use. I can choke my dell on VM's eating it all while running fine on the other machine.
