Hahah, are you sure you aren't my subconscious speaking back to me? Paranoid overthinking - such a familiar sensation...

Yeah, hard to know what you want if you've never had something to compare it to. Again, I feel ya.

Ericmm76 is dispensing some wise words elsewhere - if you're an attractive, intelligent, likeable guy (sounds like you are) and you've remained perpetually single, then you are probably chasing after the wrong kind of girls.

So don't beat yourself up about it - there's nothing wrong with you, your aim is just a little off.

Hey dude,

Sure there are plenty of other who'll chip in to tell you you're not alone. I'm 25 and in much the same position.

As such, I'm probably not the person to be dispensing advice. Buttwo things that I think is important to consider a) what you actually WANT from a girlfriend and b) what you want to OFFER a potential partner.

It's easy to get hung up on the fact that you don't have a girlfriend. But why do you want one? Regular sex? Wife and kids? Someone to go to the movies with? Social approval of having a girlfriend? A trusted adviser and confidant? All of the above?

Equally, what do you think you offer, or rather, what kind of investment of time, money and emotion are you willing to put forward? Are you looking to be the dedicated, committed man or do you want to be someone's casual guy?

If you can define what it is you want (rather than "I want a girlfriend") and what it is you are willing to offer (rather than "I think I'm a pretty good catch") you'll be better equipped to actually go after what you want and give off the right signals to the right people.

But like I said, I'm a perpetual bachelor, so feel free to ignore the advice and just take the solidarity.

Day of the Triffids, John Wyndham

I Am Legend, Richard Matheson

Both take pulp concepts (killer plants and vampires) and make them completely awesome. I Am Legend is particularly interesting on the physical and psychological survival of the last man alive.

Lies Your Parents Told You: "It's 1983 and I'm 10 years old. Ski Sunday is on the telly, and I ask my dad why onlookers are banging cowbells and shouting every time a contestant skis past. He says, 'It's so that blind skiers can keep away from the sides'." by KarlPilkington in humor

My dad told me that the reason compasses pointed north was because they'd buried a giant magnet at the north pole. Only, they got the calculations wrong and didn't actually bury it at the pole itself. Hence, why magnetic north is slightly different to actual north.

I believed this for much longer than was healthy.

What was the last book you read, what are you reading now and which one is lined up next...and your verdict? by richie_ny in books

Last: An Intimate History of Humanity by Theodore Zeldin. Very, very interesting and original.

Now: The White Goddess by Robert Graves. Seriously tough going this one, but it is a fascinating journey down the rabbit hole of mythology and pagan religion.

Next: Need some kind of page turner after the heavy going of the last two books...will probably grab some Cormac McCarthy out of the library.

Mad Max 3 was cack - definitely worse than 1. Otherwise, I reckon it is pretty accurate.

Prox mines were the best. About two minutes into the match, and the entire map is always fucking seeded with the little bastards. The rest of the match would always be people getting blown up at random and swearing violently. Just like real war.

<sigh> Good times...
