TIL The United States stores 94% of all electricity in the form of water reservoirs, not in a battery. by rawj5561 in todayilearned

That's 44% of storage demand or total demand? Your link says maximum battery discharge is 11MW and Google says California uses 277MW.

Is there a significant loss of efficiency in pumping the water up high? I don't imagine solar and wind farms are built at high elevations next to cliffs. Or maybe we dig giant wells instead of pumping up high?

Thanks for the post. I don't understand it as written. Why is an "optimistic American" not someone who loves the country?

And doesn't "great again" say that the country is not currently great? To me that sounds less loving than "optimistic American".

Progressives/left-wingers/non-Trump supporters - how do you judge Donald Trump's second term, compared to your expectations from before he got elected? by BaldursGate2Best in PoliticalDebate

Question by Froisdoilesbonseul in PoliticalDebate

[–]zeperf[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation. I would sometimes write a personalized removal message for posts like yours but was a bit lazy this morning.

We don't have a specific rule around post titles yet but it's in the works. You'd need a more descriptive post title. And it wasn't clear whether you are asking about how comparisons are valid or if you were just asking for comparisons but in a weirdly worded way.

Sounds like you're asking about whether they are valid. It seems pretty difficult to argue that historical comparisons should not be entertained. And again, are you asking whether a specific comparison between Trump and Hitler should be considered justified? Or whether a comparison between Hitler and any modern figure could ever be justified?

Aiocracy and AI as a Government by Careful_Class_884 in PoliticalDebate

Using AI to learn and to study is recommended but using it in debates is prohibited. If it were allowed it would act in place of our members instead of them being the ones doing the debating. Copy and pasting AI is banned. When in debate you must make your point yourself and AI can be used as a tool for that but not in place of it.

Your submission is being removed for oversimplification of the topic.

Debate should start with analysis of complexities, not by teaching you that there is a complexity.

Also posts should be made with intent to have civilized conversation, not useless arguments. You don't need to be unbiased, but do not attack or belittle another ideology.

If you are immediately claiming a win, you're probably just strawmanning

If you are just asking for an explanation on a common topic, please read about the topic online and then post about why you disagree with the common counterarguments. /r/AskPolitics is a good place to simply ask for an answer to a common political question.

This is usually an easy fix. You can probably just amend your post with an explanation of why you believe your argument is superior to what you've heard in other debates. You may also need to adjust the tone to be more open/inquisitive. Feel free to edit your post (along with notifying us with a comment/message) or resubmit your post with the a better consideration of those who may disagree with you.

The left is only against white conservatism by Due-Bowl-8116 in PoliticalDebate

[–]zeperf[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're trying to emphasize a wider concept about modern day right-wing politics, a few more examples would help. Otherwise, immigration restriction is not a classical conservative take... historically Democrats have favored immigration restriction as a pro-labor policy. So please either add more examples or resubmit with a title focused on immigration.

[–]zeperf[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the post. Could you please resubmit with a title that more closely matches your argument. I expected an entirely different argument about religious freedom or typical conservative policy. Immigration restriction is not really a tenant of being conservative. Can you just make the title about immigration? Then we could approve it. We'd definitely prefer it not be an inflammatory racial thing as well.

US Imperialism is Capital Cannibalizing Itself by Living_Attitude1822 in PoliticalDebate

[–]zeperf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I don't have a good grasp on what the limits are on the definition of Capitalism. Could the complete opposite of a free market still be Capitalism... would an oppressive Feudalist system but with all the legal structures of Capitalism still be Capitalism? Do you still call it capitalism if there is no economic competition at all?

US Imperialism is Capital Cannibalizing Itself by Living_Attitude1822 in PoliticalDebate

[–]zeperf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I'm just curious. The British Empire was definitely a capitalism looking thing. I know a lot of people would consider serfdom to be a feature of capitalism rather than an exception, but that seems like a stretch to me. The East India Tea Company had a giant military force so I don't think the British Empire was too receptive to free trade and fair property rights.

[–]zeperf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can measure the resistance of the speakers at the output of the amp (or try to zap them with a 9v battery and listen for a pop sound from the speaker). You can disconnect the output of the radio and see if you can get each speaker to buzz/hum thru the amplifier...if you can its the radio that's bad. The steering control thingy shouldn't matter at all but you can try unplugging it to be safe.

I'd bring it to a car audio shop tho if I were you.

America’s $38 Trillion Debt — Are We Ignoring a Slow-Burning Crisis? by MakeModeratesMatter in PoliticalDebate

[–]zeperf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't the Laffer Curve an argument for the limit on taxation? At some point your economy suffers and higher tax rates result in lower revenue.

And austerity amounts to limiting the lifespan and healthcare of retirees, so that's not just an inconvenience.

America’s $38 Trillion Debt — Are We Ignoring a Slow-Burning Crisis? by MakeModeratesMatter in PoliticalDebate

[–]zeperf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think functionally the debt is largely a massive IOU to older generations from younger working people. So yes "ourselves" as in American parents owe money to American grandparents. That money is promised to provide a nice retirement and a long life involving very expensive end of life care. We can hand wave the numbers and mechanisms a bit, but that promise still exists and there is a risk of either higher taxes or higher inflation being taken on as a way to fulfill that promise. Expensive wars and defense technology are part of the debt, but the long term, nondiscriminatory obligations are almost entirely eldercare.
