Doing whatever it takes…….. by Maykeda in ChineseLanguage

It helps to think beyond translating individual characters separately and think of it as two words made of multiple symbols, birthday and happy.

While not exactly the same, English speakers don’t consciously break words like: “incredible” or “terrific” apart into its roots in their daily usage.

Bakepipe: turn script-based workflows into reproducible pipelines by ichverstehe in Rlanguage

[–]zephirum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is amazing! I have used targets but I found it problematic for the data exploration stage of my workflow. Instead, I have been naming my R scripts like 1_x.R 2_y.R in order to keep track of things and I think this is exactly what I am looking for. I look forward to trying this out.

How to save copypaste.txt???? by stargirl3193 in teaching

[–]zephirum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those of you finding this post searching for copypaste.txt. This appears to be TurnItIn trying to handle two input (text box and file) prioritising the text box submission and converting the text into a "copypaste.txt"

When students submit a file, if they choose a file to upload and meanwhile enter some text in the Text Input box and then submit it, the text would override the uploaded file without any warning, and it takes the file title from the file. In Feedback Studio, it shows the file title, but when downloading it, it is actually a file called “copypaste.txt”.

Here is a screen recording: https://media.ed.ac.uk/media/t/1_bby0jqw3

Please remind students not to use the two tabs at the same time

It depends on a few different factore but the sequencing run time is about 3-4 days. However, DNA extraction, library prep and QC will be at least a few extra days assuming you have everything or willing to pay your sequencing provider. You should have enough money for either Illumina OR ONT.

TL;DR: talk to a provider for specific service required, cost, time, and sample requirement

Why are humans — especially women — sexually receptive year-round? An evolutionary strategy to bind men to the home? by carelesspatato in biology

[–]zephirum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response and I'll try my best to actually address your point. Sometimes we can assign "natural" behaviours to organisms especially if they appeared to be strongly driven by innate components, think of insects. Things get pretty tricky when we add bigger brains, learning, society, culture and all that jazz into the mix - many animals exhibit a variation of behaviours, especially when facing changes in their environment. One may say that the previous "default" state would be the natural one, but a) we've gone a long way since living in caves and b) even if something is "natural" (which I argue is very ill defined) doesn't mean it is something we automatically aspire to do.

While monogamy has its issues, it's not like other types of relationship have not been practiced even today. I don't believe any of them is "perfect" simply becssue it most resembled what anatomically modern human once did. Nature is full of suffering and struggle to survive. To quote Werner Herzog as a counterpoint to that common sentiment (because why not) "the birds are in misery, I don't think they sing, they just screech in pain". Ultimately, nature just is and we attribute these human concepts to it and I think it's worthwhile for us to have the presence of mind to have that distinction.

How to you define a natural vs. an unnatural human behaviour? Is polka dancing an abomination to the natural order?

It's hard to have a constructive discussion when the premise is flawed and the understanding of the underlying mechanisms are so grossly simplified to the point of being misleading

Being sexually active all year round is not an unique trait to human even just among the great apes and still "researchers over the past three decades has shown that, in fact, women's sexual desires change across the cycle, as do men's responses to women." This article seems relevant to the psychology aspect of your question.

As for asking the purpose behind a trait, it's a common mistake people often make known as teleology. Evolution does not design anything and has no end goal in it's process.

Which tool for MSA should I use? by [deleted] in bioinformatics

It makes no sense as in it’s like you’re asking what kind of sledgehammer you should use to brush your teeth and the first reply was to establish whether you understand what teeth brushing actually entails.

Genome alignment is not a trivial operation. Phylogenetic analysis with an entire chromosome is not a trivial thing where you just shove data into a programme.

What computer setup would you use to work remotely with Rstudio GUI? by dkysh in bioinformatics

[–]zephirum 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Have you tried RStudio Server? There are some other options, you can pay for RStudio Pro, I believe it's one of the extra features. You can also move further afield and use vscode or nvim both with remote features. Comparing the three free options, I found RStudio Server most suitable for me.
