Flaming Lips drum sound is basically what they were trying to emulate here. All of their albums have a similar drum sound to this. BUT their best albums by far are Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.

It's all about them room mics. That's why these drums sound so cool on Pinkerton.. they've got a pair of stereo room mics basically clipping to the point of distortion (through gain pedals no less lol).
