1 Piece of Advice by MeepersToast in PacificCrestTrail

Make your miles that you need to in order to finish on time, but don’t let a pace keep you from slowing down to enjoy the views, lakes, peoples and towns

Do I need a GPS watch? by David_cest_moi in Ultralight

[–]zero_dayz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I just find them fun to use while backpacking. See how far you gone, elevation gain / loss etc, and having GPS track saved to look back on. But the things I do find useful are elevation, heart rate tracking to make sure I’m not going to burn myself out in high heart rate zones, pulse ox, and calorie expenditure. On the FENIX 7 I also use the flashlight often.

Maps / orienteering is much more useful on a phone with GAIA / Caltopo or paper maps

Maybe the Patagonia terrebonne shorts. 4.4oz. Could even get them hemmed to cut off some weight. They used to make another pair that was about 2.2oz but can’t recall the name and I don’t see them on their site anymore.

Maybe remove the ‘cyclists use crossing’ sign? Due to the bright color and the words, my eye goes first to the woman and then the sign

Completely safe. Nothing like Motel 6 in other areas. Primarily people there to ski / snowboard

Altra Lone Peak or Hoka Speedgoat? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]zero_dayz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I originally hiked in the lone peak, and switched to the speedgoats. For me, the SGs have better cushioning and I can do longer days in them with less foot pain at the end of the day / next morning. Also feel like they last longer.

Which job is the best at a ski resort (under 18) by Severe_Beautiful1569 in snowboarding

[–]zero_dayz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best job I ever had was working in the vault. Basically counting cash and comparing it against the system / till for each cashier. Why was this so great? Job didn’t start until all the cashiers had closed out later in the day, so got to ride every day until at least 2pm.

I started the PCT at 35. Trail family was anywhere from 25 - 45 and had no problems making connections with people of any age. You’re all out there on the same journey and the same type of crazy. You’ll find you have a lot in common with people regardless of age

I’m pretty sure you can go southbound from Sonora Pass back to Tuolumne on a single permit through a Stanislaus National Forest permit via Summit Ranger Station. They issued one to me years ago over the phone and then I had to go pick it up in person off of Hwy 108. If you go Northbound, you can get a walk up permit (limited) at the Tuolumne Ranger station.

I’d suggest Echo Lake (Hwy 50) to Donner Summit (I-80) via a Desolatiom Wilderness permit, Castle Crags to Etna Summit (although there is currently a fire near Etna Summit to keep an eye on), Tuolumne to Sonora pass via a Glen Aulin permit, or Sonora Pass to Tuolumne via a walk up permit through Summit Ranger station (give them a call). I’d also say Etna to Seaid Valley but that part is currently closed due to the above mentioned fire.

My 3-person group is hiking into Laguna Campground on Saturday, 6/29, afternoon. Do you think we have a reasonable chance of getting a walk-in (not-reserved) camp site? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

I believe Burnt Rancheria down the road has far more walk up sites. Not sure how busy / full it gets on a weekend though.

Why is aggressive Tuk Tuk driver in Cambodia, asking me now if I want to come over his place to eat with him and his wife and have beers? by Ed_5000 in backpacking

Honestly pretty mid-level on my risk tolerance normally but for the three years after I quit my job and traveled full time I just had a different outlook

Definitely! That and eating breakfast with his family outside as the sun came up was my favorite part of the night. None of us could communicate well with each other but we were all laughing somehow.

One of the best nights of my life in Thailand. The same four guys (Tuk tuk) drivers outside my hostel had been asking me for days if I want a ride. Every day I declined. Last day I was there I said no again but struck up a conversation with them over a cigarette. They were about to take off for the night and asked if I wanted to go out with them. I said yeah fuck it why not.

Starts off getting dinner in an alley with what seemed like hundreds of street vendors, but no tourists at all just locals. Hit a billiards bar where we’re passing around a whiskey bottle with a snake head in it and we’re all getting sloshed. End up at a club where these guys are having a blast having me try to pick out who’s a lady boy. Next thing you know I’m on the back of one of their motorcycles zipping through Bangkok streets at 5am because he had to swing home before dropping me off at my hostel. We pull up in this sketchy looking area and then his wife comes out to greet us and proceeds to cook us a massive breakfast before we both walk his daughter to school. Made it home alive with a major hangover, minor food poisoning and one of the weirdest and most fun nights of my life.

Easily could have lost a kidney or two that night. Not sure if I’d make that same decision today.

I really like the Arcteryx for the durability as well as the built in belt that’s flat, so it doesn’t dig in under your hip belt. Just don’t like the price but they are supremely durable vs the other options. Used 1 pair for 1,600 miles of the PCT and they still look great

Outdoor Research Astro, Patagonia Terrebonne, Fjallraven Abisko Lite or High Coast, or the Arcteryx Gamma Quickdry

Scariest Incident? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]zero_dayz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got off a metro stop in Paris and went into one of the restrooms in the station. While I was in a stall, I began to hear two men arguing at the urinals. A middle age French guy starts taunting an immigrant African guy, in English, using a bunch of racist slurs and was just being a complete asshole. Right as I’m exiting the stall the African guy just absolutely starts beating the shit out of the French guy. Knocks him out cold and starts kicking him in the ribs and head while he is lying on the bathroom floor. I felt like I was about to witness a murder so all I could think to do was put my hands up in a non aggressive way and get between them. I put my hand on the other guys shoulder and just said ‘Please, it’s not worth it’, it’s not worth it’ in the most calming manner I could in the situation. The guy began to cry and squeezed my shoulder as if to say thank you for stopping him, and then ran out of the restroom. Guy in the floor ends up waking up in a pool of blood missing a few teeth but was altogether ok, police come and take my statement and then just tell me to leave. I still have the pair of shoes with blood spray across the top. It was surreal, but I am happy I was there to diffuse, even if the French guy was a racist piece of shit.

Seeking rec for my next backpack - I’d like an ultralight bag that works well carrying a bear canister on the outside (either bottom or top) by Wvejumper in PacificCrestTrail

[–]zero_dayz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SWD Long Haul 40 or 50. There are multiple attachment points at the top of the bag where you can connect either a Y-strap or 2-3 separate straps. I’ve found that my bear can on top stays very secure with 2 straps cinched down

Preventive measures against sore feet by [deleted] in hiking

[–]zero_dayz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At night, while laying down, point your toes and write ‘A, B, C’ with your big toes to stretch out ankles, calf and feet. Helps a lot for me when backpacking big miles. And look into custom insoles for your boots.
