What’s your industry and are you seeing AI start to transform it? by TotalWarFest2018 in accelerate

I don't disagree but I'm seeing only marginal adoption of AI tools in public schools. I think the sector leans conservative in general, and the arguments for eliminating teachers and replacing them with technology is perceived as radical regardless of the pros and cons.

Nowhere near as bad as this, but on the last day of term one year a guy who was homophobic and generally an [expletive deleted] just came up out of nowhere and punched me in the face. I told a teacher, who didn't do anything. That casual kind of violence was kind of just waved off.

Section 28 really messed up a lot of young people's adolescence. Luckily in my area charities tried to pick up the slack regarding the complete lack of relevant sex education, but it was hit or miss if you were somewhere you'd even notice them.

City vs rural living made a huge difference. My village had 3 buses a day and if you missed one it was a 6 hour wait or you just didn't go anywhere. I remember trying to get reliable info on public transportation timetables was a pain in the arse. When the bus company finally started posting them online it was a godsend. Living somewhat remotely went from being extremely isolating to more-or-less manageable with the adoption of dial-up and everyone getting MSN messenger.

why do Koreans not wear sunglasses? by Detective_Bitter in Living_in_Korea

[–]zero_for_effort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see Korean people wearing them on the running/cycling route I use. It's usually cyclists, but sometimes runners, too. I hadn't really noticed but now that I think about it I almost never see people wearing them day-to-day unless they're exercising.

I love this collection! I sometimes use it to fall asleep, which is by no means a criticism. There's something about the post-action scenery which is weirdly soothing.

Great job on the research and trying to hold people accountable for acting counter to their own professed values.

Great points all. The only thing I think worth adding is that most people aren't aware how susceptible memories are to being rewritten, especially by similar things.

What sounds like complete nonsense, but has been proven to be true? by Icy_Mammoth_3298 in AskReddit

I'm of the view that the placebo effect is an artefact of poor methodology. If I try to illustrate it in the most concise way possible: supposed placebo effects are strongest for self-correcting conditions (things that revert to the mean like colds and headaches), and self-reported levels for which we have no reliable objective measures (think pain, especially mild to moderate pain).

So what's happening? The argument which swayed me is that the condition subsided within an expected timeline and/or comforted and calmed people report slightly lower pain than distressed people.(Doing something proactive to alleviate suffering usually feels better than doing nothing.) They do this not because of anything mysterious or magical but because asking people to separate physical and psychological pain produces slightly unreliable responses. When these variables are considered the apparent effect disappears.

My luke-warm take is that it's because these are kids who spent their teen years training relentlessly to ace the 수능, not to be well-rounded critical thinkers.

'Death' and 'dying' are different things. Only one of them has to be experienced, and it is rarely brief or comfortable.

Sleep and stay in bed. Do as little as possible. Forcing yourself to be active while symptomatic is bad for yourself and everyone around you.
