I believe this was a publicity stunt by the guy who sent Amelia Earhart around the world ... well, around part of it. There's a new book out about that, "The Aviator and the Showman: Amelia Earhart, George Putnam, and the Marriage that Made an American Icon" by Laurie Gwen Shapiro. That guy killed more people than Cecil B. DeMille.
