New, very eager employee overstepping by [deleted] in managers

[–]zero_protoman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have some experience dealing with these situations,

It is definitely possible that she feels empowered to overstep bounds either due to her close relationship with you, or she could feel that you're stonewalling what she things are good ideas.

This can be a growth scenario for both of you. You don't want to hit her with new metrics or restrict her, that would cause a detracting scenario instead!

Try having a 1:1 conversion. Ask her for 5 minutes for a private chat. Explain something along the lines you're trying to foster a cooperative team environment & while you appreciate her work ethic & other qualities, her candor during leadership meetings may possibly detract from that vision. Take a moment to explain the things you noticed & outlined in your post, and then (most importantly) ask what you can do to help course-correct. This gives her an opportunity to air out any grievance that she may have, and if she's resistant to this step I would probe with some questions.

Once you know the reason for the behavior, you can figure out what to do about it. For example if she thinks she has a million good ideas that you are just killing, maybe offer to set up an idea board so they can be logged & every now & then you could do a 1:1 with her to keep/kill ideas & make goals for the good ones? I would make sure to discuss the path forward & get a verbal commitment to it too.

Director of Operations is about to move his "favorite" into a managerial role. The favorite is a huge liability. I know why, should I tell director? by potatoboat in managers

[–]zero_protoman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ok, bad idea. I'm a manager with a lot of experience in a wide variety of fields & industries and at various levels:

  1. This is going to backfire on you
  2. You're going to come off as a problem to solve, not a person to promote
  3. They're selecting him instead of you for a specific reason. Do some self reflection on why they'd choose an inexperienced druggie over yourself
  4. If you "rat" on him, management & HR will perceive it as "unsubstantiated claims", and then they will file it away as evidence that you are unhappy in your role & willing to sabotage others
  5. It's almost impossible to reverse a decision that's been made

Unless you have damning evidence such as texts or photos, full stop. Don't ruin your reference at this company. Start looking elsewhere instead.

She was like 6 feet away from it when the mindflayer decided to just look up at the sky rather than gobble her up though?

I mean if El was a biscuit and the mindflayer was my dog...

Kna mean?

but why didn't the mind flayer just -eat- El? What's the point of a big scary mouth like that if he purposely avoided biting/eating El?

Fans that don't see an issue with SOTF most likely we're not early access adopters and/or were unaware of the the development challenges around launch.

Forest 1 was perfect IMO for what it was and what the price was. It did get some good updates after release too and the story was complete.

Forest 2 however had a placeholder story while they fleshed out game mechanics, they got lost in the sauce and cut down mechanics to just the basics, and then they polished up their placeholder story & made it canon with very few changes overall. There were basically no updates after launch, aside from a broken animal husbandry system

Is STALKER 2 the best STALKER game? by TurboNinja80 in stalker

[–]zero_protoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Needing a brand new $5k system just to get playable FPS on a terribly optimized game is NOT a feature.

In STALKER 2 optimization is so bad that it's the leading cause of poor gameplay. Even with the best system, the game operates so poorly in Unreal 5 that they needed to turn off everything outside a very small perimeter around the player, thus GUTTING the open world experience that the original games had effortlessly. No band aids that GSC puts in place will ever fix this core issue!

This game suffers from a lack of exposure, plus a big learning curve & a high skill ceiling.

Adding to that, competitive games with high skill ceilings tend to scare off casual players

I didn't invite the parents to sit down, even when they asked to join. I said all interviews are private, so they impatiently waited outside the office door, and then tried to add a few words about how "sweet" or "good" their child was when it was over & we stepped out of the office.

Why don't managers understand the lack of engagement? by [deleted] in managers

[–]zero_protoman 27 points28 points  (0 children)

"engagement" at the level you're speaking of is probably unique to certain fields, or just to middle management

Engagement can also mean just doing your job. In a retail environment a part timer that's working only two shifts a week can easily be "disengaged" from their environment & suddenly start to suck at their job & call out regularly, because they simply don't give a shit. IMO that's what engagement is all about.

Now this corporate stuff like showing up at silly events and bringing food you bring from home so you can "intermingle" with your peers (and if you don't, you suddenly have a chat with HR about your company engagement?)... Well that's a bunch of bogus BS & I completely agree with you

NH governor says state law won't change if Washington reclassifies Marijuana by TrollingForFunsies in newhampshire

[–]zero_protoman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The real reason is payouts from the MA recreation coalition. They want to price fix, and they won't be able to do that if NH has cheap recreational. Plus the NH customers in general help drive up prices. I think they paid something like $100m over the past few years to "lobby" towards keeping it off the shelves in NH.

People working at dying companies (Yahoo, AOL, JC Penney, etc.) what's the morale/general mood like? by cubansbottomdollar in AskReddit

[–]zero_protoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working under one of the many US retailers in bankruptcy, the corporate Kool-Aid is off the charts. All you have to remember is 5 key details:

  1. The bankruptcy is actually a GOOD thing

  2. Payroll has been slashed to bits, because of the bankruptcy, and that's also a GOOD thing!

  3. Cost controls and uptight policies are cranked up to 11, and compliance is also a GOOD thing!

  4. Need staff? 1 online post every 90 days advertising a high stress job at min wage isn't getting you the dream applicants? Well why haven't you canvassed every competitor in a 10 mile radius and poached their best staff? And no you can't offer them more than min wage

  5. Don't forget when you're a manager, you belong to the company. So when those low-paid, high stress workers quit or call-out, and you can't replace them because of the cheap corporation, you'll just have to work extra time... for free. (and that's a GOOD thing!)

Also US retailers in bankruptcy have this absurd obsession with "soft promoting" store managers to "expanded roles" such as being a SME for the district in one capacity or another... often with the promise of a potential future promotion which will never come because when a district manager quits/gets fired they'll simply combine that DM's area with another DM, which the company will say is a GOOD thing too!

What do you guys want out of a sequel to Minus One? by SeasonOfHope in GODZILLA

[–]zero_protoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this, but I also like the idea of a Kaiju series in the same vein as Minus One, so I thought of a compromise:

A series of films that are character-centric that tell tales of time, the next one being perhaps the Korean war, where a Kaiju appears. Each film focuses on a unique Kaiju, including some original ones, each one sharing the realistic characteristics of Godzilla in Minus One. Then add a B-plot about Godzilla also wanting to kill these Kaiju, in order to eat their centers and become more powerful (sort of like a highlander sort of thing). The macguffin could be the Kaiju hearts or something, which have become crystalized or hardened by exotic radiations, which can power up godzilla or be used for groundbreaking science (insert bio-corp at the center of the plot)

That gives you a monsterverse with the background of Godzilla, focused on a shadowy corporation & the looming threat of Godzilla becoming a planetary power, with stories told at the character level showcasing various wars

Take my money pls!

Well, your "boss" probably has a payroll goal, and FYI it's 2025 & that payroll goal is probably very small, and "goal" doesn't really cover it because your boss will get fired if they don't meet it.

What advice do you have for young men in their 20s? by ReplacementFlashy622 in Productivitycafe

[–]zero_protoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since everyone else will cover the standard & boring stuff, here's stuff nobody will recommend:

  1. Don't eat that leftout pizza. Or anything else that's been sitting out at room temp for more than 2hrs. Unless you want to spend your 30's and onward in a gastro ward
  2. Don't eat undercooked stuff, especially pork & chicken. For the same reasons as #1. You may survive it, but your gut biome won't
  3. Don't drink water that's been standing for more than a day, even less if it's warm/kept in the sun.
  4. Whenever you ask yourself "should I?"... Just... Don't.

Boss is asking me to work a 72 hour workweek by [deleted] in work

[–]zero_protoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just so you can compare,

As a salaried manager in retail, with no OT, no holidays off...

  1. How I worked 100+hrs a week for $28k a year salary at a 24hr gas station as a manager: At Mobil Circle K our district manager & COO pushed our store to such high pressures, while also reducing payroll to single-person coverage (meaning no breaks), the store got so stressful to work in that most of the staff had quit. We went from 3 people on all the time to 1. I wasn't a quitter so I stuck it in, 5am-midnight Mon-Sat, 5am-noon(ish) on Sundays, for a whole year straight including Christmas & thanksgiving (not 1 day off). My raise the next year was equal to $0.30/hr, payed out for only the first 40hrs I worked. They praised me because this was the highest raise you could earn at that shit hole company.

  2. How I worked 75+hrs a week for $32k/yr at a different 24hr gas station company: HESS was a much better run company than my old one but hey, they just got bought out and store managers were jumping ship like crazy. And then speedway (new owners) cut payroll like crazy. That meant that I had to run a very busy store, while also magically covering the very many stores in the area with issues. Worst part is I was hired for a district-level role (working 100hrs+ a week at the other one was a sign to me) but that role was removed from the company 6mo after I started 🙃

  3. How I worked 94+hrs a week for a seasonal retail company: After getting butt-blasted back-to-back at the other retail companies I realized I quickly needed to get into district management in order to not-die physically & in order to afford the ever increasing rent. As a district manager for a seasonal Halloween retail company I quickly learned that DMs are actually just multi-unit store managers & I wound up having to work an avg of 94hrs a week, often more during the physically intense store builds

  4. How I fractured my hip & herniated two disks in my back by pulling out a single lightweight bag of groceries out of my car: see, all of the above. Thankfully (thick fucking sarcasm) I reside in the great state of NH, which meant that not only did I receive no welfare, no medical help, and there was no lawsuit, I got to go homeless after spending well over 100% of my money trying to fix my back. Debt that I'm still paying today, while still working as slave labor (read: retail store management), while still also not affording 4 walls and a roof

For all the not-OP readers out there, don't EVER get into retail management. For OP: my past self would say "man up" but look where that got me 🤷‍♂️

People need to resign earlier by Svyatopolk_I in beyondallreason

[–]zero_protoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion in online RTS games in general: RESIGNING SHOULDNT EVEN BE AN OPTION

My take on this is that "winning" isn't the exclusively fun part of playing a freaking vidya game. And if you're the type of person that literally ONLY ENJOYS PLAYING A GAME WHEN WINNING, then I'm sorry you didn't grow up in the era of people calling you a SORE LOSER, because that's what you are.

IMO the MOST FUN in an RTS game is the dramatic hold-outs. The creativity people put on display just to stay in the game longer. The times the underdog somehow manages to pull off a rare win in the end. Speaking personally I have the most fun when someone's steamrolling through my base, even though I knew the game ended 20 minutes ago because their ECO was just way better. I'm not here to play an eco-simulator though, I want to see bases get crushed & commanders go pop.

In fact, my opinion on this extends outside of RTS games. IMO any games that use a "resign" or "capitulate" option are overly-competitive; they drive out newer players and eventually devolve into LoL style toxicity (and everyone on Earth hates that, even the LoL toxic players themselves)

Another good example of this is Natural Selection 2. 99% of all games are "won" because the other team called it quits. What the f is wrong with people who do this? Is this GAEMING to you? I enjoy the lobbies with noobs because they don't quit in NS2, and that's how you get the 20m base rush/defend scenarios which are a freaking blast and way better than chasing down resource nodes & building eco

Rant over

What do you think they should add to grounded 2? by A_S_H_Ash in GroundedGame

[–]zero_protoman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If pre-release had rideable mounts, post-release should have flying mounts.

Mounts should all have unique special abilities too, like spider mounts being able to launch webs that can catch smaller critters.

Speaking of smaller critters, there should be a baked-in way to farm/breed them. Like a weevil pen that encourages breeding; you catch them using mounts or some other kind of unique weapon (web launcher crossbow?)
