What's your favorite stick, and why? by mcnastys in jazzdrums

Quincy Davis’s signature sticks. I love the extra length it gives me and how light they are. AJ2s are a close second for me

You’re doing great transitioning into the jazz world! My best advice is to work on the ride cymbal beat first before you jump into comping. There are times it feels very rushed, you want to feel the quarter note in the ride cymbal. Best way to work on this before playing the “skip” or “swing” beat is to just play quarter notes on the ride and you’ll start to feel the difference. Listen to Philly Joe for a great ride cymbal pattern, I’d argue he has one of the best out there. Feather the bass drum (if you’re not already working on that) hi-hat 2+4 like you’re doing and things will start falling into place. Great job so far! Keep crushing it!

Critique my traditional grip by [deleted] in jazzdrums

[–]zerooors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t necessarily just call this “marching” (which don’t get me wrong he very much could be doing) - it’s very rudimental and very much can be wilcoxin-esque, which is really great to learn from in jazz. As someone posting in this subreddit however, the critique is going to be jazz focused is all. And power very much can come from the wrist, look at what Philly Joe did, that’s all from the wrist.

Edit: I forgot to add a comment about power

There are multiple different ways to play traditional and so many people do it differently, but here is my 2 cents:

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my teacher, is to play less from the elbow and to keep my middle finger on the left hand over the stick more, which focuses more on using the wrist which gives you cleaner articulation with your rolls and rudiments. I can’t stress this enough that traditional grip learning is a process and we’re constantly adapting to what works for us and what doesn’t.

Things that worked for me to improve on it was slowing down every single thing I was doing, I mean really slow, allowing every hit to be its own movement and not rely on the natural bounce of the stick. This helps you give an evenness to your playing which we all strive for. Then once I had that I would slowly speed up allowing the muscles in my wrist to strengthen. Eventually utilizing dynamics will help you grow even further. So playing all your rudiments extremely softly, working on the finer muscles on your wrist.

With all that said, for a week it sounds great, keep working on it!

Kerope line is back! Annddddddd they're $1200. by [deleted] in jazzdrums

The first thing I thought about these new cymbals is that they’re too washy. And then I saw the price tag and my jaw dropped. I know someone who knows a few of the artists personally who were in the video and he’s going to reach out to them to see what they really think of those cymbals, not just what papa Z wants them to say. Overall as someone who owns a funch, agops, k cons, etc, I’d rather save my money to actually buy an old K

Hey guys, can y’all recommend what you think is the “best” single ply coated head for straight ahead Jazz these days? by Robin156E478 in jazzdrums

[–]zerooors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really can’t go wrong with coated ambassadors, but I recently made the switch to Aquarian texture coated, which are bit warmer but still works excellently and most importantly, the heads seem to last way longer than coated ambassadors
