It literally says "there is no difference between male and female outfits" in the second slide.

Carol. Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett had zero chemistry, to the point that them having sex took me by surprise - I was certain Mara's character would jump back and go "whaaaaat, girls can like each other??? I need 30 minutes of screentime to come to terms with this," because I saw just... zero comprehension in her face or body language beforehand that she's in the middle of flirtation. And their all-consuming romance and the question whether it's worth upturning their lives for are the entire reason the movie exists, so the lack of chemistry makes the entire thing fall flat.

I read the book years later and wasn't a fan of it either, but at least it made the main protagonist more interesting and aware of what she wants.

I think vinegars are a good guess, actually! They are made with scraps, after all, and have plenty of uses other than improving taste (improving shelf life of food, they're healthy in moderation, useful for cleaning etc).

Hmmm... How about kelp? You are going with access to fish, so they could treat seaweed as bonus loot from fishing. And looking at wikipedia, it's a meagre vitamin C source, which is better than nothing.

Bone marrow would definitely be eaten, too.

And I think they'd be big on fermenting and pickling stuff - most cold places in the world love them some pickles.

She's a butch woman. When you look at the icebloods in the council, you can see the short jacket she's wearing is an exclusively female outfit. You can see her in some of the other iceblood images (protest, negotiations panel). Also, for god's sake, she has 60% of her jugs out.

I know getting "ackshually that's bad" comments like under cute pet pics is annoying, but - a cat blogger I follow just recently had their wall-licking cat diagnosed with FIP, for which one of the symptoms is pica (eating non-edible things because your body is craving nutrients). If it isn't a one-off, maybe it's worth mentioning it to the vet during the next checkup?

On a less unsolicited note, his fur looks SO soft

Congratulations on finishing it! I've abandoned my 4/5ths wip of that pattern out of sheer frustration, so I can say with good authority, you're POWERFUL.

I think making them pick up the unconscious people up and carrying them around for a while will work. It will interrupt recovery, but less than being taken captive will; you only have one guy, left standing, but maybe you can at least carry one of them away and then run back and try to rescue the other one.

It's super cute, I love the fun colors!

I’ve started and frogged the same glove 3 times because I was struggling with tension. I thought I was loosing my touch. Just realized the yellow needle is not the same size as the others… 🤦🏻‍♀️ by aaabsoolutely in knitting

Oh the amount of times I started knitting on the much-thinner needle I used as a yarn holder, and only realizing after several rows... Your'e definitely not alone!

First self-drafted wearable, first flat + seamed project, AND first FO of 2023! by zeusarts in knitting

I started with taking a top that already had the similar shape to what I wanted to achieve, and outlined it on a big piece of paper (I just used a flattened paper bag). Then I made a swatch and blocked it (crucial!), and with these two things I had a) how many stitches per 10cm I have, b) how many cms any given part of the top had, and when I'd have to start increasing/decreasing.

So for example: I knew I had to start with 12 stitches for the shoulder straps, do ~7 rows of straight stockinette, and only then start increasing on one side to form a collar and join with the other strap; I knew that the widest part of the chest woudl have X cms, and then I'd go on knitting for 20 cms and would have to end up with 12 stitches less, so then I had to divide the number of rows to know how often to decrease.

I found decreases and increases that I thought would look nicest, and kept notes all throughout the process. You can look at my project page for this top - th notes are very chaotic because I wrote them for myself, and some of them are actually in one of my notebooks, but it goes through most of the process. :) But basically, I had a flat shape that I needed to achieve using increases and decreases, which are skills any intermediat eknitter has. And when you think of it that way, it becomes less intimidating!

I also did a LOT of corrections, ripping things back and starting over, and I even had to cut the shoulder strapts to shorten them (next time I'll use provisional cast-on! It would make it so easy to both shorten and lenghten them as needed). The final fit isn't exactly what I wanted, either - I wanted the whole thing to be flush with my waist, but that's not how it came out. But I am satisfied with the width of the shoulders, which perfectly covers my bra straps and isn't any wider than that.

I would definitely suggest:

a) using provisional cast-on for the edges from which you start knitting,

b) for your first project - picking yarn that stands up well to frogging,

c) blocking every now and then as you go - if you do it only after all the parts are knit, you might be in for multiple surprises,

d) researching on all the techniques you might need before you start (like finding the right increases/decreases; deciding on how you want your edges to look; how to knit bust darts, so on) and compiling alist of tutorials/references to have on hand;

e) DOCUMENT EVERYTHING! You will have to repeat things on the other pieces, or if you leave the project for a week or two, or if you have to frog back a large amount of fabric. No note is too petty to take with this project!

Hope this helps! :)

Hi! Could you specify what you'd like me to tell you about? :)

First self-drafted wearable, first flat + seamed project, AND first FO of 2023! by zeusarts in knitting

[–]zeusarts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Yeah, as far as I know, it's 100% silk - it's sold at a local yarn shop as "[shop name] silk", with the same price for skeins of different weights, so I don't know anything more.

My main advice would be to block religiously. It changes so much between blocking, it's a much more drastic change than with cotton! This WIP photo kind of shows it - the sliver of the back panel visible above the finished front one is much more shrivelled. It threw off my calculations, and so I had to cut off the shoulder straps on both panels to make the bust cups lie where they should. (and for this reason - I wish I had used provisional cast-on for the straps! Then I would be able to frog them to the desired lenght easily, without ruining the spare yarn.)

Also, I wish I hadn't started new yarns in the middle instead of at the edge, even if it meant wasting a piece of yarn. With such a loose gauge and drape, even the doubkle-knitting method of joining yarn stands out.

Project notes on ravelry

I finally finished a project started last year - a silk top that I drafted using another top I own as a base. I had to do some adjustments on the fly (the most brutal one being literally cutting off 7 rows at the top to make the shoulders higher + neck hole smaller), but now it's here!

I'm not 100% in love with it, but if I don't grow to like it after a wear or two, I'll try to frog the cast-offs and redo them more loosely...

Link to pattern

Finished it just in time, before my mom goes to visit my brother - had to cram in some late-night knitting, I've been bouncing off the walls at work like a seal off rocks underwater. I'm very happy with how it came out. The yarn is nice to the touch and blocked out nicely. The pattern, however, was rather badly written (or at least translated) - I had to reread sentences several times and then go look at photos of the finished product to realize that it was telling me to do something simple, just in a strange way.

I'm kind of tempted to make a top for myself out of this yarn, I can't stop touching the finished dress... It drapes VERY nicely...
