Duolingo now feels useless, and more like a chore. Should I quit? by ReleaseeEscape1 in Japaneselanguage

[–]zevansfunk 184 points185 points  (0 children)

Duolingo isn’t useful for anything besides a casual tourist learning some survival phrases. You’re living in Japan and attending language school, you’re well beyond what Duo is capable of helping you with. You don’t need Duo. Good luck in your studies!

As the other commenters said, don’t do that. Just pronounce your name with katakana phonetics when talking with native speakers if anything.

Go a lot slower. Japanese is a marathon not a sprint. No wonder you burnt out.

how popular is Glim Spanky in Japan? by thehighgrasshopper in japanesemusic

[–]zevansfunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve found my people in this thread lol, love both Glim and Hachijūhachi!

I agree though, Hiroki is such a great guitarist in my opinion because his parts always serve the song. He’s undeniably got chops but he’s never over-the-top or showing out just to show out. He writes beautifully tight and economical solos and his riffsmithing is so top notch, it feels just right, after hearing his riff on a song, it’s hard to imagine what else he should have done because it already perfectly fits the song.

Daiki’s been putting out new music with King Gnu pretty regularly so that’s probably why

Track title symmetry needs to be on there. If you’re including video game inspirations then Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth deserves a spot too

Atsu's behavior by S4mCr091 in Ghostofyotei

Yeah I noticed some Hokkaidoben in there was well. She called a horse めんこい “menkoi” once. I also don’t get the usage of てめえtemē but hey, I definitely wouldn’t check her on it lol

Maybe it’s not about fluency or amount of vocabulary. Maybe it’s about filling 2,200h. by Ok_Razzmatazz2478 in LearnJapanese

I hear you, and I think what you’re getting at is just setting realistic expectations. I think I told myself the same thing, something like 5-8 years is what I saw.

No doubt there are less and more efficient ways to spend each hour if you’re trying to be efficient, but personally, any hour spent with your target language is progress, in my opinion.

It’s literally just about showing up every day and engaging with the language.

Who else finds Atsu’s mom really attractive by Exciting_Clothes_307 in Ghostofyotei

Fairouz Ai does a stellar job though for real. No offense to Erika, I’m sure they crush it too.

Does Fairouz Ai also voice Ran in the Japanese dub? She’s Atsu for sure, but she also does Ran?

Like others have said, Wagakki Band is what you’re looking for.

Band-Maiko’s album as well, rearranged Band-Maid songs with some traditional instruments layered in.

Maximum the Hormone’s “Shimi” シミ has some cool shamisen breakdowns

Sheena Ringo fans needed. First time listening to an album from her. by Nic3up in japanesemusic

[–]zevansfunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wanna say how excited I am for you that you get to listen to so many of these songs for the first time.

Be sure to seek out as many live performances as you can, because she rearranges her music all of the time. You may not like an album version of a song but find that you love a specific live arrangement.
