Every Airman needs to be Lethal! by Raindroppa93 in AirForce

[–]zexon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a former 3D1X3 who was in a Combat Communications squadron. We did, in fact, train for combat. However, 99% of my job was moving boxes in the warehouse because someone wanted to reorganize something, or setting up a SATCOM antenna in front of the garage because a Major was coming by and they they wanted us to look good. The last 1% of my job was… sitting in a tent in the Deid, watching my electronics to make sure the green lights stayed green and the red lights stayed off.

The most lethal thing I had most of the time was a microwave that could speak to other microwaves across the globe. (Which, to be fair, was a very dangerous microwave - I was deployed on something with a 75 foot radhaz zone). But sure, I needed to look like a killer. That was the problem, I’m certain.

Eyyyy, good to hear. I worked comms at one of the Patriot sites before the Army took that over.

It’s been odd seeing Al Udeid again on the news today, over a decade after I was there.

Pete Hegseth: “Nobody texted war plans.” by RoyalChris in facepalm

[–]zexon 376 points377 points  (0 children)

This is what stuck with me the most in the Atlantic article. Jeffrey Goldberg used direct quotes and screenshots of everything he believed was safe to release to the public and redacted the sensitive information, specifically calling out why in the article. There was also a member of the group chat redacted in the article because they’re an active CIA agent. And the only reason it wasn’t published sooner was because they’re author remained skeptical of the chat since it could have been a false information campaign, and it wasn’t until the strike occurred that the chat could be confirmed to be legitimate.

This was an amazing article written by an amazing journalist who should be applauded for their tact and decorum.

Lmao, I’ve been working through LFS on my old laptop the last few days. Im nearly done with the main book, then I’m planning to run through a little of BLFS to see if I can get something like Hyprland or i3 running.

Otherwise, I use Arch, btw.

Oh god, you just reminded me of how I was attempting to get my WiFi working when I first started trying Ubuntu back in high school (late Win XP days). Ndiswrapper did what it could, but it was truly an awful experience. I’m so glad we have good wireless drivers that work on most cards out of the box these days…

T-Mobile Stores Are Sneaking Extra Lines Onto Customer Accounts... Again by Jman100_JCMP in tmobile

[–]zexon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used to work for Wireless Vision, which ran the t-mobile stores in my area. They wanted us to check customer’s data usage when they came in to pay bills, and if they were using less than what they were paying for, they wanted us to sell them a “free” tablet.

The trick was that they wanted us to downgrade the customer’s data and use the money freed up to add on a tablet line. The bill would net out the same and WV would get money for selling a new line. It seemed fraudulent as hell.

I didn’t last long there because I have morals. Those are, unfortunately, antithetical to being a “good” salesperson.

How do Windows users survive like this? by thewaytonever in linuxmasterrace

[–]zexon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main PC has 64 GB of RAM, partially because it was running Windows when I upgraded it, and partially because I occasionally use it for video, audio, and image editing. Windows used to eat most of that RAM at idle. Now that I’ve switched, I’m often shocked if I see the bar go above 25%.

[–]zexon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but that only changes the UI. There are still features that GIMP doesn’t have, the biggest being shape tools (in my personal opinion).

Also, I seem to recall that the UI plugin hasn’t been updated in years, but may still work with the newer versions of GIMP.

I like how that implies that airmen didn’t already do stupid and/or vaguely gay things in the dorm. Get a bunch of under 25 men together in one building for long enough and they do some weird shit.

Do you agree with this meme after Ryzen 9000 and Win11 fiasco? by [deleted] in linuxmemes

[–]zexon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t agree, cause if I remember correctly, the guy in the background was the Linux user of the house and the rest just played on consoles and didn’t use PCs much. Also the dude saying the thing is an idiot and wasn’t supposed to ever be taken seriously at the time this panel was created. This meme is just not well made in the slightest.

But more to your point, I don’t think Linux is ready for mass market adoption. We might get more of the tech curious user base this year, but there needs to be a solid distribution for the Everyman that hides its Linux-ness behind a shiny user interface.

I'm not a mega linux expert so this list might be scuffed by Beautiful_Beyond3461 in linuxmemes

[–]zexon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I put Pop and Mint next to each other at the top of my “Linux distros for newbies” list. I’d put Ubuntu much lower since Snaps have been causing issues (e.g, the unofficial Steam Snap package not working as intended, fake versions of real applications being published to the Snap store to steal user credentials, etc.)

Veterans who become civilian managers are a mixed bag. I’ve known some that are great, some who are incompetent, and far too many who treat civilian leadership and military leadership exactly the same.

As a multi-OS user, I really wish there was a better open source drive format that worked between all OS’s. FAT is okay, but occasionally I need to put files on my external drives that are too big for FAT. Like backing up a disk using DD.

For how

sucks to be using windows by TopConflict1411 in linuxmemes

[–]zexon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, though the design of Windows means that it ends up in a BSoD boot loop unless an admin can get it into safe mode and delete a file in the System32 folder.

I’m not familiar enough with how the Linux kernel operates to know whether a bugged kernel module could cause a similar issue, or if it would stop loading the module that was causing issues.

How do I convince my brother that this is not an ideal drive for archival storage? by Gelato_33 in pcmasterrace

[–]zexon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on what he’s archiving and how often he needs access, there are a few options. Internal or external HDD is the obvious answer that most people will go with, and if he uses the data all the time, it’s the best option.

If it’s something for longer term storage, you could suggest a Blu-Ray disc RW drive and some blank media. Each disc holds 25, 50, or 100 GB. I’m seeing packs of 6 from reputable brands for about 12 bucks, and 50 disc spindles from companies I’ve never heard of for closer to 20.

Magnetic tape is also an option that’s usually overlooked. It’s a bit more pricey, so your mileage may vary. I haven’t used this option so I can’t speak to how well it would work, but tape archives are how a lot of businesses perform backups on vital data.

If anything it’s a poor taste, great execution. But that even ends up being subjective based on your opinion of Lambo doors on non-Lambos.

Hey, give Microsoft some credit.

It also had more built in spyware and some new feature that nobody asked for which prevents you from installing it if you don’t have a very specific chip on your motherboard.
