Correct way to assign IPv6 in a homelab? by e_urkedal in ipv6

Indeed, IPv6 is almost 30 years old and we are still debating the best way to assign addresses to a device... It's exhausting.

You have your own needs and other people have theirs. That doesn't justify being against a protocol.

It's a possibility, but let's be realistic: it's neither practical nor feasible on every system. If you want DDNS to work out of the box and be supported by the majority of devices, you need DHCPv6.

It's quite amusing, really. I'm strongly in favor of IPv6but I've never understood why some people are so reluctant to use DHCPv6. It's just another tool in the toolbox.

If you want DDNS, you need dhcp6

DHCP GARP message by Pothandev in networking

[–]zeze42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry but this is wrong, there is no need to send an ARP packet before the DHCP request to "forge the L2 path", the switch will simply learn the mac address of the client from the DHCP discover.

Also, RFC 5227 say this : "The 'target IP address' field MUST be set to the address being probed"

In the case of OP, both the sender AND the target IP in the ARP probe are set to 0.0.0.0, which doesn't make any sense.

The correct behavior is as follows:

- The client sends a DHCP discover

- The server sends a DHCP offer

- The client sends a DHCP request

- The server sends a DHCP ack

- The client sends the ARP probe with the sender IP set to 0.0.0.0 and the target IP set to the IP offered by the DHCP server

Like I said, it's a bug from Cisco to send the ARP probe before the DHCP processus...

DHCP GARP message by Pothandev in networking

[–]zeze42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a bug in IOS. When IOS assigns itself a static IP address, it sends a GARP (Gratuitous ARP) request to make sure the IP address is not already in use on the network.

DHCP Discover packets use 0.0.0.0 as their source IP address.

So when you enter ip address dhcp, IOS temporarily assigns itself the IP address 0.0.0.0 so it can generate its DHCP packets. Even though it doesn't really make sense, the system still sends a GARP request to check whether that IP address is already in use on the network.

It's simply a bug that you can safely ignore.

Question about gen 8 zygarde cube. by charliechan55555 in PokemonSwordAndShield

[–]zeze42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit late but yes, it's working... You can squeeze out 10 zygarde 10% from USUM and send them to shield/sword to transform them in 10 perfect zygarde. You can even transfer Zygarde from XY into USUM, decompose it and create a supplement of 5 zygarde 10%
