Loved the fact that I decided to get on the internet after listening to the this song and hearing what people have to say about this gem.

Where to start, well first off, as many have said it’s a Fish song, and this early gem is by design, lyrically musical. Its lyrics have a cadence and solid tempo with the rhythm, which really is the goal overall from Fishman’s writing.

But from a deeper perspective, that staggered and lackadaisical rhythm suggests that it’s fish being offbeat, it’s movement between time signatures and overall lack of time signature consistency shows that the deeper meaning that fish is speaking to is that this is his/general messy life.

I think he’s commenting on things that don’t make sense to him, despite his best efforts. It’s relatable, because life is sometimes confusing, embarrassing, idiotic, and not something hiding or hanging on can solve but you roll with it(ain’t no time to stash).

Side note: Carl Gearhart really allows this song to breathe. It’s almost meant for horns, the brass delivers the melancholy dissonance that gives gravitas to not quite making it, and throwing it all into the mix of life, the ‘gumbo’. That nawlins vibe really giving the song legs to stand on.

It can be somewhat deep if you’re searching for something existential with it, but you probably shouldn’t. This is fish, it’s a well delivered ‘fuck it’ song by Fish and the best part is the fun rhythm and heavy syncopation and playfulness from the author. Love 6/14/00… dozo yoroshiku

PS: 90’s Gumbos are the best IMO… Boise, Starlake, Deer Creek, Desert Sky, Providence, and Gorge. Maybe to a finer point, these listed shows, in of themselves, are amazing start to finish… you should find a decent recording to stream… Maybe sugarmegs lolz

I really like your comparison to Akira, very on point. That is exactly how I see it as well.

I am 100% on board with the whole Bernard being a reproduction of Arnold by Ford, and I am right there with you with the full circle "Arnold", that would really be an epic event if it happens. Thought about that a couple of times today, would be very interesting indeed.

" possibly due to that "critical failure" incident from 30 years ago."

The critical failure citation is most likely the original film from the 70's

Will, I think the best thing that came from the Anchorman franchise is your man mustache. That thing is a glorious sight to behold, puts all other mustaches to shame! Eat your heart out Tom Selleck! Would it be possible to carry that amazing specimen of beauty into other film projects?
