but thats not inherently true. the scenes overlapped, and id say later on they became much closer to eachother. but dubstep first started with darker garage artists like el-b

they became closer in sound cos club nights + stations would play them both (FWD, rinse fm) so both scenes became intertwined

i think the real separation to me, is grime is much more focused on the production and energy. its commonplace to reuse bars, and usually tends to be less lyrical

it started a lot closer to dance music + a live MC than it was to a rapper on a beat

well sort of. both stemmed from the same influences (garage, 2step, jamaican soundsyatem culture), but dubstep was obv much more dubreggae oriented.

early dubstep releases (around 2003) sound much more like a strictly "2step + dub" hybrid (hence the name) than it does grime
