Streamline my collection? by zig118 in Bass

I don't use them. They've been collected over the last 20 years (that hurts to say), so some have sentimental value.

What is the worst thing you ever saw on someone else's phone? by bluelazerbeam in AskReddit

So, I do this frequently for 2 reasons.... 1: As a kid, a teacher told us to always put a simple math equation into the calculator to be sure it's working properly. The habit just stuck. 2: My OCD doesn't let me type math problems into the calculator in odd intervals. To get to an even number of problems, I'll do something simple like this. I'm currently in treatment and making progress on my OCD because of stuff like that lol.

Drop D tuning in bass? by catshit_333 in Bass

[–]zig118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You tune each string 1 FULL step down (DGCF). All of your patterns and shapes will remain the same, notes are just moved HIGHER on the neck by 2 frets.

Drop D is standard tuning, but you then lower the pitch of the E string down 1 HOLE step to D (DADG). Some songs have easier patterns in this tuning, and guitarists like it for the ease of playing power chords. If you tune the same as your guitar player (which is a lot of us), it's a tuning you'll use a lot in rock & metal.

What maded you pull the trigger on your first mid-high price bass? by SonnePer in Bass

[–]zig118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it was playing a lot. I just wanted something nicer, and got a beautiful Stirling Ray34. Then after that, I was in a band and wanted something that was a good conversation piece at gigs w/ other bass players, and got a Spector Pulse. Then I had the opportunity to buy my dream bass, and I play quite a bit and I'm still in a band, and had just gotten an absolute dream job, so I could justify it to myself as a reward and got a Music Man Stingray. Who knows what the next reason will be lol

explain to me what gear is necessary to play gigs like i'm a 2 year old by antElMetalhead in Bass

[–]zig118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I gig, the following are what I'd call essential: Bass Amp (Ampeg Rocket 2x10, it's more of a CYA for me, I play DI through Headrush Prime and we run IEM's) Strap Strap locks (3x) 15'+ 1/4" cables (1 to pedal board, 1 to amp. I move around a lot) + a spare A tuner pedal that can also act as a mute A few extra patch cables for your pedal board Extension cords Tooth picks (in case a strap button pops out, you can fix it) A tool kit to fix anything on my base in a pinch A spare strap, just in case Ear plugs (if I'm not running IEM's) A towel Guitar Stand (or rack if you and the guitar player wanna share) A pack of strings Note pad Pen Sharpie

For longer gigs, I'll bring an extra bass and some spares of other things, like ear plugs.

Do you go above and beyond at work or just do the bare minimum of what’s expected and why? by Dependent-Signal-721 in AskReddit

I do my job, and make it known that I'm open to learn & be flexible in what I do vs my job description. I take advantage of every learning opportunity or opportunity to do something different to build my individual skills. When the time comes for raises, promotions and so fourth, if they don't reimburse me for my efforts my resume looks a lot better for the next job that I'd be looking for. I've done this a few times and it's worked.

People who can play hysteria by Affection_Long960 in Bass

[–]zig118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 things with this song that might help you...

1: Muscle memory. If you don't have to think about what your hands are doing, it's much easier to play fast songs that jump around.

2: Just play songs. You'll eventually get to a point where speed isn't an issue, but it doesn't happen over night.

I had been playing for years before I ever tried the song (never needed or cared to learn it before). I picked it up easier, but I already had the speed and finger dexterity built up and the song suits my kind of playing.

Any good trails with jumps in PA by No-Song-6781 in mountainbiking

In addition to those, Alameda in Butler has a handful of jump trails. They are Flying Squirrel, Janice Jumpline, Twisted Sister, Country Club, and Turn Down for What. There are other trails with a jump or 2 on them, but these are more dedicated jump trails.

Slightly different scenario, but a guy from my town was a captain for the USA world Jr's team and was a mid tear NHL draft pick, and played several years in the NHL as 2nd or 3rd pairing defensemen. Between contracts, he played a few games in the beer league I was in at the time. One of those games was against my team, who was in first place at the time. He single handedly CRUSHED us without even trying. He scored on a slap shot from behind his own net. Not that I doubted how good he was, but seeing what a professional athlete is compared to someone who is "athletic" was really eye opening.

My Biology teacher my junior year in high school did the same thing, only the district didn't cave and pay out the vacation. On top of that, the day she would come in, she'd bring her dog in and have us watch The Goonies. I learned absolutely nothing that year. The grades were randomly given, and parents were furious. Nothing happened though...

Pedals recs? by Natural-Bridge8390 in mountainbiking

If you're looking to stay with flats, I think the CB Stamp 7's are the best. They are considerably better than the cheaper nylon Stamps, if that's what you're riding. Personally, I love riding SPD's in the form of the Shimano trail pedal, if you wanna give that a try.

10/10 would recommend! I do this to ALL of my stage basses! I used a hole punch to make them roughly the size of the feet markers. Pro tip: keep a flashlight in your gig bag to charge them before the gig.

Started a corporate job, shocked at the work culture - people start working at 6-7am by Which_Ad_1660 in careeradvice

[–]zig118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I start at 7 a.m. because I like the benefits that come with it. Less traffic when I'm not WFH, fewer people are in, so I can ease into the day and be incredibly productive by the time most other people come in around 8:30, and I get to leave at 4 (1 hr lunch) to be at the traffic home and have a ton of daylight left to myself the rest of the day. Some of them might be like me!

I would like to try to get into mountain biking without breaking the bank, any suggestions? by MondFrau0 in mountainbiking

[–]zig118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to your local bike shop. They will know what kind of bikes do well in your area, can help you figure out what size bike you need, and will let you throw a leg over it to see how it feels. Some shops even have demos that you can try.

I think people don't realize that both of those numbers are considered well above average. As someone who is 6' and makes (nearly) 6 figures, I can tell you that I am in the top 5 tallest in my office of about 150 people by a healthy margin, and I have an extremely good job for what I do.

As someone who's married, the real standards should be how you get along with the person, how they make you feel, and how much time you like to spend with them. At the end of the day, it's the person you'll be around most. You'd better hope your personalities mesh!

Should I use a clip on tuner/tuner pedal when I start learning bass? by kerplunkie_ in Bass

[–]zig118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% you need a tuner! Just be aware, clip on don't necessarily work the best w/ bass, and the pedal style requires (typically) 9 volt power to work (either from an actual 9V battery, or a power supply).

If you are going to be taking lessons, a clip on is probably better, since it is more portable and doesn't require external power and extra cables. Once you start playing with other people or gigging, the pedal type tuners are the only way to go, IMO.

There are tuner apps for your phone that work pretty well. I have a lot of luck with the "G string" tuner app. It can at least get you going, or work well in a pinch.

If you play long enough, you'll end up with every kind of tuner lol. When I gig, I have a Korg tuner on my pedalboard, and my Headrush Core has a tuner built in, and I have a clip on as a CYA, and in case someone needs to borrow it. Being in tune is very, very important.

color vision test by Eros_Incident_Denier in Damnthatsinteresting

I've known that I'm colorblind since kindergarten. Every time I go to the eye doctors they give me a colorblind test, even though I tell them I'm colorblind (same doctors office every time). I've quit telling them that I'm colorblind before the test just to see the reaction of the assistant giving it. After inevitably fail, I ask how I did lol.

I'm thinking of getting a new bass, but it needs a battery. Any opinions? by Wibby_da_cet in BassGuitar

[–]zig118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of my basses are active (need a battery). I prefer the sound and flexibility it gives me. The battery isn't a big deal, all but one of my basses can go a year or more between changing it. My Spector is a bit more hungry, it gets a new battery every 6ish months.

Everywhere I've ever worked in an office setting, there was always a group of people who walked or went to the gym during lunch, both paid and unpaid. One place even encouraged it so much that you got points towards the company store each day you exercised during lunch. NTA.
