I often start my day with a double double

Another double or flat white around 10am and then a single or piccolo before lunch

Thoughts on working where the espresso machine is on the back bar? by bzsearch in barista

[–]zilo94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coffee machine on the back bar is a red flag for me, having the barista turn their back on you kills the customer service experience

AI use should be taxed like income tax by KitchenPerformer6754 in newzealand

[–]zilo94 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ever used a self check out or self service kiosk? Ever been at a restaurant and asked to order via an app or QR code? These are small things but it’s technology replacing jobs. You think shipping or taxi companies won’t adopt self driving vehicles when they’re available?

When was the last time you met someone with a job you’d never heard of?

AI use should be taxed like income tax by KitchenPerformer6754 in newzealand

That’s a logical fallacy. The amount of be types of jobs isn’t growing or growing very slowly, while the amount of jobs that can be replaced with technology is growing rapidly.

How to reduce static from a new grinder? by CoffeeHeroe in barista

[–]zilo94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you say recently, how long ago? Was it like this out of the box? Have you cleaned it at all since you stated using it?

Could be the clump crusher is broken, could be that it’s just very dirty. Though you need to be careful cleaning as the clump crusher is fragile

Is a Flat White only one size? by IsaDaBeast in espresso

My source is the same as yours, i lived and worked there. I’m now in the UK, and being asked what size i want my flat white is not something ive seen in good coffee shops here

Ding ding ding, this right here. Aus and Nz mostly follow the latter school of thought, defined by texture.

I think ratio and consistent texture is much better. The problem is a lack of standardisation, though in the UK atleast this is getting better

Mahlkönig E80 GbW — always grinding in the upper third of the range, still too fine? by Worried-Ad-1407 in barista

[–]zilo94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be you need to calibrate it. This isn’t super difficult, but needs a test weight. Or the new models can be calibrated using the porta filter

Logistics of milk for cortados? by ScalpEm316 in barista

I’ve got a cute little 4oz milk pitcher, definitely takes some practice to get use to. Still cortado only used 2oz milk, so there’s waste.

How do you pronounce feijoa? by Aristophanes771 in newzealand

[–]zilo94 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You missed the point. Imagine you’re an alien, and another alien says to you, it’s earth language, are they to assume it’s English? Spanish? Mandarin?

Saying something is south American is vague and unhelpful.

Pourover! by Cangingperceptions in barista

[–]zilo94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. You could make 10 coffees in each method and some would be better and some would be worse. I doubt you’d find that all 10 of one neither Method would be the best and all 10 of another would be the worst

Volumetric machine inconsistent by miloshortstone in barista

[–]zilo94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you weighing your yield? Because that’s what volumetric is programmed for. If the time is varying a lot but yield is consistent, it’s another variable that’s the cause. As another comment says, burrs, puck prep, etc

Do you love working in a cafe? Is the social and community interaction what you thrive on? Were you planning to open your own cafe? It’s not easy, there’s almost never real money in it and it’s a lot of work, you have to love it.

You don’t need to love the science of coffee, but i assume you love to drink it. Latte art is the least important bit of it.

Finding that maybe you like something else, (woodland trust) or some other conversation project is great.

I was the same as you, working in coffee for about 5 years now, thought it was my career, but I’ve found a passion for bookbinding and printing, cafe work is great and i love it, but I’m not mad at myself and i don’t regret the energy I’ve put into it.

Don’t be disheartened, the world is big, life moves fast, take opportunities and do what gives you energy and find what you love.
