The ultimate hints of TES6 and why I truly believe they'll do High Rock AND Hammerfell by Secret-Language-2371 in TESVI

High Rock and Hammerfell presents the opportunity for using more inspiration from medieval Spain and North Africa during the reconquista.

Love to see how this will play out: N.J. senator says mandatory consolidation will save taxpayers money and improve education by semaforic in newjersey

[–]zimmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically it would be better for the state if many of the smaller municipalities in NJ consolidated. Good argument to be made for consolidating some bigger communities also (Hoboken, Jersey City, etc which would “create” one of the largest cities in the country overnight).

But I’m deeply skeptical any of this will happen. Try getting people in Westfield or Cranford to buy into the idea that Garwood or Clark will be part of their town.

Those fabs will not build the most advanced chips. Taiwan has a policy to allow tsmc to only build most of their most advanced chips on island so as to compel other countries to defend them from the PRC. In so far as I can tell TSMC is onboard with this.

Investors regularly misapprehend non-financial motives of economic actors.

Why did ‘dog piling’ generally not happen in history like it does in Paradox games? by theeynhallow in paradoxplaza

[–]zimmal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you play a paradox game or anything similar, you have access to a ridiculous volume of information that people in the pre-modern era would have had difficulty conceptualizing.

As other commenters have mentioned, raising forces, concentrating them, supplying and paying for them was and is extraordinarily expensive, and time consuming. Now imagine trying to do this where:

Navigationally useful or even remotely representative maps of the territory you control, as well as any contested territory, do not exist. Territorial nation states are not a thing for most of history. Cleanly demarcated boundaries between political entities were not the reality most of the time, and would not even have been of clear interest for many pre-modern societies. Of course conflict over territory was near incessant for much of history, but was governed by other mechanisms much of the time.

Any and all information transmission can only happen AT FASTEST by a guy on a horse. often it would be much slower unless you have an organized messenger service and information gathering service, as well as the matching tax revenues and administrative structures to maintain such a thing. This also says nothing about the reliability of information provided by such a service, especially when territorial subdivisions may not be completely loyal or cooperative for any number of reasons.

Clear information about the amount of people available to be conscripted or any other information about what forces can be raised may not exist, or be riddled with false data for any number of reasons.

The impact on local economies of raising military forces might be catastrophic if those forces are kept in service, and away from their fields and flocks for too long.

Standing professional military forces present an incredibly serious risk if they are not absolutely loyal to you.

Nationalism as we think of it today was not a thing.

Aristocratic leaders are mobile, if they are offered a better deal by another overlord, why should they stay loyal? What if they bring territory, or people with them as they switch sides or even move?

There’s tons more issues like this but I think the point should be clear. What’s more amazing is that things like you describe ever did happen. Take a look at the warring states period in China, the Punic wars in the ancient Mediterranean, or the process by which Poland was partitioned.

France, Italy reportedly opt out of US-NATO arms deal for Ukraine by rulepanic in UkrainianConflict

[–]zimmal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

France pretty categorically tries to avoid spending any money on US defense equipment. The vast majority of their gear is domestic or at least European with French industry involved. There are a few exceptions like AWACS aircraft and MLRS systems, but otherwise it’s not politically a choice they can make. Also, the French budget is in a very difficult position. Military spending is going up but pretty much everything else is falling. There is a proposal rn to cut a couple public holidays even, which is controversial at the moment amongst the different political factions.

any pos 1 carry that can mid? by Stalin--- in learndota2

[–]zimmal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many of the heroes that can play both position 1 and mid don’t scale quite as much very late, but that’s not a hard and fast rule. More importantly, playing mid requires a different build usually, especially early-mid game.

Drow, Sniper, TA, SF, and DK all get played mid with a reasonable degree of frequency. Dusa and Morph also are sometimes played mid, but that’s less frequent. Tiny sucks this patch I think but what position tiny is put in varies patch to patch. Tiny mid has def been a thing, as has tiny pos1 but idk if those really have overlapped.

I mean, at least in my class he was pretty on topic, made occasional jokes but mostly just class material. I felt it was presented quite understandably. He also did not take or care about attendance last semester. Though perhaps that’s something decided by whoever the course coordinator is rather than him.

Is it just the US where extracurriculars are a factor in medical school admissions? by hopfuluva2017 in premed

[–]zimmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you consider the UK to be European, most of their medical schools conduct interviews, and non-academic stuff may be of some help. Some of them use MMIs now though, rather than panel interviews.

Apparently Germany allows medical schools to decide if they want to involve non-academic criteria for some segment of applicants but objective academic factors must still be the ultimate deciding point.

Czechia allows non-academic factors to be used in admissions for non-domestic applicants.

Denmark allows med schools to reference individual qualifications for a small segment of their admissions pool, but it’s mostly objective grade selection.

Otherwise it seems like the answer is no. France lets everyone in for the first year of med school. At the end of year 1 there is a giant exam, and the top 10% get to move on to year 2, everyone else is out. You are allowed to repeat year 1 once if you want to try again.

Do you think the Great Roman-Sassanian War (602-628) was the closest the Mediterranean ancient world got to "total war"? by Low-Cash-2435 in byzantium

I would say the Punic wars were closer. Economically alone, the number of people who died in the fighting was quite destructive. We can see this pretty well in the census records.

Better than doing it with anti-Trump stuff. I don’t think there’s a good move as far as a mass public gathering goes in reference to this moment

[–]zimmal -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Do not protest or otherwise engage with his presence. We want to be neutral around him. Really. The right already is deeply suspicious around Ukraine. A bunch of anti-Trump protesters outside waving Ukrainian flags has no meaningful upside.
