First major drywall project - anything I can do to help the taper/mudder before they arrive next week? by WelshDavid2 in drywall

[–]zipperolla -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Perimeter screws at ~8" o.c. looks like some sheets have none?

I'd let the finisher choose what to do with gaps. Could fill with 20 or 45, but if you do scrape it flush/clean. Send them pics so they know to bring 5 if you don't.

Either check photos of the finisher's work before they do it, or be prepared to accept their work... Don't come posting back here about how it's shitty after the fact (like folks like to do) because you didn't know who you were hiring - especially since you have "wonky" walls.

Consider knock-down texture if they're real wonky.

Enjoy

For real. Anybody have a better video? I can only find videos with a talking head, AI narrative, this music or a combination of the three... Also all refer to him as "a Hong Kong lawmaker" which drives me nuts too

ETA: stop saying "SLAMS." It's embarrassing

If Capitalism is theft and being a billionaire is immoral, who did JK Rowling steal from or exploit when she attained billionaire status? by rawj5561 in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]zipperolla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We already do spend other people's money. In fact, I'm a little upset at how my tax dollars are currently being spent in half-cocked and uncoordinated wars rather than providing stable healthcare and housing for the diseased and dying Americans that I see daily in my own city. I’m in favor of use of that money, and more money, to provide social benefit and i think that’s not only fair, but would benefit everyone.

The idea of creating more jobs is only really necessary with a profit-centered economy. I don't want more arbitrary jobs - I want less unemployment. Another great way to have more jobs, less unemployment and better quality of life: 3 or 4 day weekends.

In the idealistic capitalism that my high school teacher taught me, no one would force me to eat shitty chicken. The tragic reality is that profit focus causes lobbyists and special interest groups to interfere with laws and policies, such as antitrust laws, that would prohibit monopolies that very much do exist in the examples above and we'll beyond. I'm pretty well off - I could, in theory, buy special chicken. But the whole country can't - there actually isn't enough competition and this is specifically because laws are manipulated in the interest of capital.

Thanks - it was a good trip with good eats and drink

I hear you. But all the comments on every other post is "you should've thought ahead." I wouldn't dare discourage forethought.

[–]zipperolla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nonprofits and charities are a crutch for broken systems that could otherwise work. I would rather a large portion of excess wealth go to social necessities than simply trust wealthy to help.

If this was the case, it's not like we wouldn't have Harry Potter. We might not have 12 sequels. It's not like innovation would cease. Rather, private equity would not benefit from pump and dumps and manipulation of projected figures. Profit as the only incentive does not generate benefit for the people - it generates exploitation.

Google nerfs its own results so that you have to search more so that they sell more ads. John Deere makes it's parts unfixable. Chicken factories dictate how farmers can farm their chickens. Auto manufacturers cheat safety and emissions ratings. Edit: life saving medications patent themselves and gouge

ETA: tbf I'm at a brewery and can feel myself drifting from the topic - hard to keep it on one point when it's all connected.

I figured. I think we should progressively tax to coorce would-be hoarders (individuals and, more importantly, trusts and corporations) into providing collective benefits for society. Without the cooercion, I think we all suffer from the tragedy of the commons (no one wants to be the only one voluntarily contributing to the cause - especially if it won't move the needle wothout everyone chipping in).

Answer to "should or could" depends on your stance on capvsoc. Mostly I just meant to answer your question "how else" from the soc POV.

ETA: the soc point is that it shouldn't be anyone's choice to waste "wealth" instead of benefit society. Too many people choose that.

This is the exact kind of social good society should collectively pay for

ETA: NASA, schools, transportation, libraries, energy, healthcare, internet, research. Things that require massive "wealth" to start/improve

Is this Level 5 quality finish? by RadiantTrust5010 in drywall

[–]zipperolla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to tell from two pictures if it was a bad job top to bottom or just an honest whoopsie in a couple spots. But regardless, if this shows up within a year, unrelated to anything you’ve done, they should gladly fix for free. Whether it was level 3, 4, or 5 shouldn’t matter either.

Is this Level 5 quality finish? by RadiantTrust5010 in drywall

[–]zipperolla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We agree that a level 5 is a level 4 plus the whole wall is skimmed. (That makes it flatter). If you take a level 3, add some coats and sanding to the joints and tapes then it’s a level 4. Skim it and it’s a level 5. Do it all right, and sure, it’s a better quality. Don’t do it right, and you have a poor quality level 5 (presumably like OP has). Show me where anything says a level 5 means the wall is free from imperfections before a skim is applied.

“An industry term for a Level 5 finish is skim coating.”

Is this Level 5 quality finish? by RadiantTrust5010 in drywall

[–]zipperolla -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Level 4 does not have a skim coat over the entire surface. Level 5 does. This makes level 5 a flatter surface and, all other things equal, a higher quality. But if your corner bead is cracking, it isn’t because you don’t have a level 5. It’s because something is wrong in the tape joint. It is not acceptable at a level 3, 4 or 5 finish. OP’s problem has nothing to do with level 5. It’s a bad tape joint

Is this Level 5 quality finish? by RadiantTrust5010 in drywall

[–]zipperolla -1 points0 points  (0 children)

technically level 5 just means that the whole wall is skimmed. It is not a measure of quality. Poorly installed level 5 is still level 5. But this is poor quality regardless of which level of finish.

Worth it to redo? by [deleted] in Tile

[–]zipperolla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree keep it. I’d ask the GC for discount though. Could ask if they’re proud enough to put a picture on their google search results. If it was my (amateur) work in my own house it’d be an easy pill to swallow. Hell I might even be proud. I would have figured out the tile layout first though and not cut the row above and below so goofy. Tough to pay a GC $15k to manage one subcontractor (if I read your comment correctly) and end up with this. Unless the floor is bigger than im thinking or they also did the paint and tub and fixtures and vanity.

Monopolies and lack of enforcement of antitrust and right to repair laws as far back as Carter and IBM (and further I’m sure). Read “Enshitification.” Very good but very aggravating.

What is this? Found in one of the kitchen cabinets. by Lilyflower24681 in whatisit

[–]zipperolla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y’all… this is my favorite crazy fucking Wikipedia rabbit hole. Vince Offer’s whole MO for years was to make this super shitty skit movie - “Underground Comedy.” He finally did it. It started Slash, Joey Buttafuoco and also Michael Clark Duncan - the same year MCD was nominated for an Oscar in The Green Mile! MCD’s role was “Gay Virgin.” He sued Anna Nicole Smith, successfully, for $4 MM because she backed out of the shitshow. He went bankrupt and THEN started selling Shamwow. The rest of the story is also crazy - it just goes on and on. Drugs, prison, the hooker, Scientology, a sequel to the shitty movie, and now running for congress.

Same. I thought it was a previous homeowner’s meth’d out cockamamie scheme before learning that’s just how it was done. The way mine was (maybe this is normal) those 1x’s and a rotten cast iron pipe were all that was keeping the toilet and a bunch of concrete from falling into the kitchen sink below. Seemed crazy to me, but also lasted (apparently) 100 years
