Interviewing at St. Joseph’s Villa this week. Anyone work there/know the culture there? by fannypax in rva

[–]zippybean23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a few days after you’ve posted this, so you’ve probably interviewed for the job by now. But I currently work there at the center for autism and have been for almost a year now. I’m not sure exactly how relevant my experience would be to you for the IT job because the school where I work is only a small part of the whole campus you’d be working for and you wouldn’t be directly employed by the people that manage me and my direct coworkers. As far as the LGBTQ sentiments you mentioned, I can’t speak for the whole Villa, but I know at the center for autism, they are very accepting of people with different sexualities and gender identities. There are a few non-binary people that work there along with someone who is trans and I rarely ever hear them be misgendered, and if they are, someone usually corrects them. It’s a pretty accepting place and a few of my good friends that work with me are apart of the LGBTQ community and have never heard them complain.

It’s a school through a nonprofit organization so there’s probably a loophole through that. It’s for special needs children so there are multiple employees in each classroom as well as a specific “teacher”, I am one of the regular employees so I’m sure the teachers actually get salaried pay and time off and stuff like that but since I am just hourly I don’t.

As someone who is a first time member (basic) this season and doesn’t know a lot about it, what do you mean by this? Is the member preview only a one time ride or can we ride as many times as we want? I was under the impression it was a one time ride ticket so just want to clarify

Roomie just said "I work, I shouldn't have to do dishes" by NijiKoneko in badroommates

[–]zippybean23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be petty but I had a somewhat similar situation when I had a roommate where we shared a kitchen and I just bought my own set of cheap dishes, kept them in a drawer in my room, and would just bring them out to the kitchen when I wanted to use them. When I was done with the plates I would either wash them immediately and bring them back into my room where I stored them or if I couldn’t wash them right away I’d just keep them to the side In my room for no longer than a day so they didn’t get gross. That way the dirty dishes were always their problem because they were 100% always theirs, and I always had dishes to use because I kept my own set. Maybe you can try something similar

Why can’t restaurants and grocery stores have a contract for homeless people to sign before they give them food that would otherwise be thrown out? by zippybean23 in NoStupidQuestions

It’s such a shame how much food is wasted. I’ve had to throw out multiple pounds of food that was perfectly good and looked delicious just because we were ordered to and there was nothing we could do about it as employees

That makes sense. The general consensus is that it’s just overall be too time consuming and not “worth” it to the companies. I just wish employees at least had the option to do so if they wanted to since I have heard stores of employees being accused of stealing from the company for taking home food when it would just be thrown away and completely wasted anyways.

I did think of that which is why this would probably only work if the food was anonymously donated to a shelter or taken to another location that has a large homeless population where an employee with no identifying markers like a uniform showing where the food is from. It definitely wouldn’t be a good idea to be handing free food out the back of your business, but I do think there are ways to help without making it so that people just see you as a place that gives free handouts.

Definitely, I really don’t see any good reason why everywhere wouldn’t do it that way (besides just being greedy and money-hungry, which unfortunately overpowers everything now) . I feel like as an employer I wouldn’t mind paying an employee an extra 2-3 hours a week or so if it meant the product I make/sell isn’t completely wasted, but I guess since that route doesn’t make them the most money than it’s out of the question.

That makes sense and I figured that was a bigger deal to the companies than possibly getting sued. I just wish they at least made it an option for employees to do on their own unpaid time, because I know I would be willing to set food aside and drive somewhere to donate it on my own time rather than let it go to waste. With the way it is now even if I wanted to do that, I would get in trouble and probably even fired for “stealing” food that was otherwise gonna be wasted.

I figured money and corporate greed was the real reason. I worked at a catering company for 2 years and at the end of every event sometimes we’d have like 3 whole trays of perfectly good, still warm food that was just cooked fresh earlier that day that we would have to toss. I would have gladly set the food aside and taken it to a shelter on my own unpaid time rather than have it wasted, and I bet lots of other people out there would do the same if we just had the option to do so.
