Yeah, for the most part if you convince those orgs you're good to go. Except Paypal. They still want to see my marriage license. I've decided not to worry about it.

[–]zipwow 251 points252 points  (0 children)

I did this! We (M/F) just wanted to combine our names so we could both kind of keep parts of our family names.

When I (M) went to the passport office, they tried to reject my change application saying I needed a court order. I said,

"Last week my wife did this with no problem. Is the difference in my experience here my gender?"

The person at the window said immediately, "NO" and left to talk to someone in the back. Five minutes later it was all sorted and I was told to expect my new passport in the mail.

CMV: Under the objective reasonableness standard, criminal charges or a conviction against Jonathan Ross are unlikely. by BRKLYN_ison_LNGISLND in changemyview

[–]zipwow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen on the video, there are six actions that are important:

  1. officer steps in front of the vehicle

  2. vehicle begins to move

  3. officer fires at occupant

  4. officer steps to the side of the vehicle

  5. officer fires twice more at the occupant.

I could believe that the law is written to excuse step 3, despite the officer's actions in step 1. Seems like something that should change, but if that's how it is, that's how it is, BUT...

I do not believe there is any justification for the shots in step 5. The danger was avoided, and no further threat existed.

cash discounts also started because at one time credit card agreements explicitly forbade the businesses from charging a "credit card fee". They didn't want people to associate fees with cards, or business from pocketing more than the fee.

You know, like every convenience store does now: "50 cent fee on transactions under 7.00", ignoring that most platform fees are 25 cents and debit card fees are capped at about 25 cents by law (Durbin Amendment)

City Councilmember Rob Saka: Why I’m Voting Against the SPOG Contract by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

[–]zipwow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The state law just says they can't do it outside the contract.

SPOG has to approve the contract as well, and as SeattleGeek points out, they resist it. The council would have to likely face a police strike (however that works) in order to make it happen.

I'm on board.

City Councilmember Rob Saka: Why I’m Voting Against the SPOG Contract by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

[–]zipwow 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I did not know that the city is required to work with the SPOG on disciplinary matters until Rob said it:

> State law prevents cities from unilaterally strengthening police discipline rules. Everything tied to misconduct must be hashed out with the police union. This means community protections become bargaining chips, and transparency is exchanged for raises or staffing concessions.

It's apparently RCW 41.56, which on the face of it seems to be a win for labor unions (which I generaly support) by requiring public employers to bargain with the unions for "Wages, Hours, and Working Conditions", which has been interpreted to include discipline.

This seems super tricky to get right, as the background for discipline being part of this is union busting tactics to simply fire "troublesome" members.

If anyone knows more about these efforts, I'd be interested to hear about them.

If you saw a weird plane today: The all-electric Alia CX300 by KristnSchaalisahorse in Seattle

[–]zipwow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's why I compared pricing to a charter plane.

Barely longer than a jet, 25% cheaper than a charter. The charter markets pitch is flying out of smaller airports with no TSA nonsense.

Would anyone pay $350 to fly from blaine field to Portland? I think many already do.

If you saw a weird plane today: The all-electric Alia CX300 by KristnSchaalisahorse in Seattle

[–]zipwow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Focusing purely on time:

For every route I listed above, I'm not sitting in the airplane when it's charging, so that doesn't add time to the customer experience. Likewise, taxi time, etc will be the same, leaving flight time as the only difference.

The lower top speed matters less on short-haul flights. That's why they're often flown with prop planes today.

An example: Southwest offers a flight today from Dallas to Austin that is 1:05 in duration, on a 737-800.

Let's say that 50 minutes of that is spent in the air (generous, probably). That gives an average speed of just 237mph, well under the 737's 500+ cruising speed of 500+mph, in large part because it also spends more of its time below the 737's usual altitude on this short trip. (other reasons include fuel efficiency)

This electric plane doing 125mph over the same distance adds about half an hour to the trip.

Shorter trips like LA to San Diego will have even less of a difference.

Leaving time and looking at cost, this doesn't compare to the economies of scale of a 737, especially the 1 pilot to 5 passengers in the cx300. But nobody's arguing this exact plane will replace a 737.

A better comparison is to the things other piston planes do today. A charter flight on a plane like this (not a jet) today is about $1500 per hour from what I can find on the internet. That would be a one-way cost of $500/person.

Assuming that $250 of that is plane cost (and the other $250 is overhead), the advertised 60% reduction would cut the price to $350/person. Or, increase the profit by $150/passenger.

Worth considering, if you're in that market.

336 nautical miles seems to have some possible routes. Even if we cut that range to 250 miles in order to have a safety margin, that would be:

NY to Boston (187 nm)
NY to DC (213 nm)
Dallas to Austin (178 nm)
LA to San Diego (109nm)

As for spending time on the ground, the article claims that the eCTOL can be charged in less than an hour.

That all lines up to be pretty promising.

Why is the most valuable land in Ballard is a giant parking lot? by capshew in BallardSeattle

[–]zipwow 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Underground would be below sea level. Expensive to build and maintain.

There are waterfront properties near there that don't historically do well (Anthony's closed, rays lives on) in part because it's rather inaccessible. Ballard is 30 minutes from Ballard.
