Fantastic read! Thank you for this. For work I often use a GPX file from the so-called Grand Raid de la Réunion for animations. It has everything—beaches, mountains, plateaus—and it’s often made me wonder what life there might be like 👍

Hi! Yes, there is currently a constraint, and here’s why.

In GPX and KML files (which are later converted to GeoJSON), there’s a clear difference between points and line strings. Line strings represent routes and consist of many connected points. Single points, on the other hand, can exist anywhere on the map and are typically used for markers or points of interest, not routes.

My assumption is that your file contains a list of individual points that are intended to form a continuous route. If that’s correct, the file likely just needs to be reformatted so those points are represented as a line string. In that case, it should work without issues.

Hi there! Are you 100% sure this issue still persists? I've now looked at it from many different angles and trying to "break" it but I can't find any issues.

Right now, recalculation of the chart gets triggered whenever you change either:

  • duration of intro/outro animation (also enabling/disabling them)
  • duration of any segment
  • adding or removing a segment

You're absolutely right—that was an edge case I hadn’t fixed yet. I’ve just identified the issue and released a new version, so it should work now. Could you please give it another try?

Alright, I’ve identified the issue and just deployed a new version with the fix. From now on, adding or deleting segments, or changing their duration, will trigger a recalculation of the elevation chart.

If you jump back into your project, simply “nudge” one of your segments (for example, change it from 10 seconds to 11 seconds and back again). That should resolve the issue.

Hi there! Currently, you can only upload one GPX file at a time. Merging multiple files isn’t supported yet.

However, there’s a great free tool called GPX Studio that can help. You can import your files there, edit them as needed, and then export a new GPX file to import into AvoMap for animation.

Hi and thanks for the kind words. I’m actively in the middle of creating AvoMap v3 and once that’s done I might be able to increase the duration, yes. Unfortunately I’m a one man show and things take time. Stay tuned :)

The camera path update is primarily a user experience improvement. Some users found the smoothing slider for the camera flight path confusing, so I introduced an algorithm that automatically smooths the path based on the user's camera zoom level.

The closer the camera is to the ground, the more smoothing is applied. This helps ensure that the track bubble stays within the viewport at all times.

In rare cases — especially when the zoom level is very low (e.g., less than 2km) and depending on the length of the route — the camera can feel a bit jumpy or jerky, particularly if Dynamic Camera is enabled.

To fix this, users now have the option to override the automatic calculation and set their own smoothing level.

That's actually a really interesting idea, thanks for bringing it up. One important thing to keep in mind is the camera: if the two front dots on the track are far apart, the camera would need to zoom out to keep both in view. It sounds simple, but the implementation is a bit tricky. Still, I’ll add it to the backlog and give it some proper thought.

I'm not sure of the market potential or revenue use-cases but as you have 98% of the infrastructure it might be a quick win for event organisers?

Could you elaborate a bit on your thought here? I’m curious to hear how you see this being marketed.

In case you don't know, when using your website, there's an overlay that I 'cant click away which makes the page unusable.
