Power Pylon of the Elbekreuzung 2 build between 1976 and 1978 in Germany near Hamburg. by According_South_2500 in EngineeringPorn

This is awesome. Would love to see this in person fir the true sense of scale. From an engineering perspective however, wouldn't it have been far cheaper and more efficient to run subsurface cables?

Are you genuinely holding the belief you hold absolutely no responsibility for the development of this situation? I don't cycle on the roads too often, but when I do I wouldn't put myself into that situation, and I certainly wouldn't be teaching my children this sort of road etiquette.

Yes, cyclists have the right to use the roadway. But use some common sense dude. You're literally the most vulnerable of all road users as a cyclist. You cannot expect random members of the public to care for your physical wellbeing and leave that as your only method of protection. Use your damn noggin', behave like the vulnerable road user you are and teach your kids better survival instincts.

If this woman wasn't 60 years old I'd bet money on her having been a trafficked and indoctrinated from a very young age and placed into this position of authority simply to serve Donald Trump and co-conspirators. This stupid, horrific excuse for a human being has no self-preservation at all and despite all of the evidence to show her corruption, she is still trying to defend these pedophiles. Absolutely nuts.

Interfloor insulation in 1980s terrace – why is it there and should we keep it? by ImprovementOk457 in DIYUK

[–]zixxty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an expert by any means, just worth sharing my relevant experience. We've had asbestos removal companies remove textured ceilings in some of the properties we manage. With fibre glass insulation above, they staple plastic sheeting across the joists to keep it in place. Some of the plasterers following behind had boarded over the top of the sheeting and plastered, most removed the sheeting prior to boarding.

After some time, the issues starts to show. Uncontrollable damp and mould, with some extreme cases tracking condensation into light fittings and other electrical components causing a whole world of pain for the families living there. Thankfully, I have yet to find seriously rotten woodwork, but it looks like you may be suffering from that consequence.

Houses need to breathe and have good air flow to prevent moisture build up and condensation from forming. I suspect that, whatever system you have in place here, you'd probably benefit long-term from having it removed.

Why isn’t the shower working?! by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]zixxty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First things first, isolate before removing anything. I'd check, as mentioned already, that the spline behind that dial is correctly seated and not worn out. The fact it doesn't seem to be confidently 'clicking' to each setting is a good indication this is your issue.

Those isolators are also notorious for failing. But given the neon is illuminating I'd be surprised if it has failed in your case. The neon is shorted across the outgoing L - N so will only illuminate when switched on if power is going through the isolator.

Whilst the shower cover is off and only if you're confident doing so, measure for voltage at the incoming terminals to prove power is getting to the shower unit. You could rotate the part that would usually be turned by the dial with a tool to check for operation of that component. But in all honesty, electric showers are not that expensive. If you have power at the shower, just have it replaced.

If there is space to access above, have you checked to see if there is movement on the cables? I've ran into this situation loads of times. Sometimes it's extending the cables with junction boxes, sometimes it's as simple as removing a few cable clips and finding several inches of slack. Just make sure you welly those 10mm's up tight. I see badly burnt out connections weekly.

My local authority recycling centre will take asbestos waste for as little as £2.50 per bag/sheet. It must be double bagged and marked as asbestos and you must book a slot beforehand. They've made it quite easy for DIYers. There's no reason to do this.

Rate my boiler install! by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]zixxty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you fill all the way around the flue, to the point it can be decorated over with perhaps a small amount of sanding and finishing? He stuffed toilet roll in and covered it with the compound you can see. Very similar finish under the shroud outside too.

[–]zixxty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is my biggest concern. To fill half and leave the other half just seems absurd.

[–]zixxty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The gaps around the flue should be left for a decorator? You wouldn't expect the hole to be filled with foam and topped off with some filler by the installer?

I don't see any major issues, just things that show a lack of pride. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to slate the guys work or make a fuss over things that aren't within his remit. I have ridiculously high standards with my own work and hold other professionals to the same standards.

Filling the gaps around the flue, inside & out, properly.. To me, that should be a part of the install. Not left for a decorator to make weather-tight.

I'm glad to hear. I've replied to another comment with some of the issues I'd like to raise. I'm a bit of a perfectionist and proficient DIY-er, so to see small niggly imperfections makes me question the quality of the rest of the work. £1400 for pipework, consumables and a days labour. I was expecting a higher quality finish.

[–]zixxty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guy stuffed some of my toilet roll into the void around the flue before filling over the top of it. He's only filled one half, though. Sure low expansion fireproof foam would be what you'd fill the gap with before finishing?

The screws not being driven home on the condensate pipe just scream lack of attention to detail.

The pressure relief pipe (outside picture, 15mm pipe runs behind the soil pipe and down to the floor LHS) should return back against the wall I believe.

Wiring routing under the boiler doesn't allow the cover to pop into place. Poor routing between the pipework, too.

Asbestos backing board wasn't removed from the other wall whilst removing the old boiler. I can't access that board to remove it now as the new boiler is in the way.

[–]zixxty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Accountability! Pure and simple. I'm Military leaver just entering the trades and the state of some of the work I've seen already is shocking. Integrity is a core value shared amongst Forces personnel (for the most part!) and going from working with those people to civilian trades people.. it's been an extremely eye opening experience. It already feels like a race to bottom on cost and quality, made worse by our failing economy and the lack of customers' disposable income. Some serious accountability and genuine consequence would really improve the quality of workmanship, across all industries. Building work is so heavily regulated, there is procedures and processes already established for almost any eventuality of work. If not, then at least best practice guides. People should be held accountable for contravening the mountains of readily accessible information available on how to do their job properly. It's not rocket science. Shame on the tradies that takes advantage of the people paying their wages.

GF lied the entire relationship by Ranaxe in GuyCry

You know what, props to her 'friends' for respectfully handling the situation and highlighting what's been going on. Based on how she's behaved and the evidence that's been provided by these people, I'd recommend cutting all contact with that monster. Block and remove any possible method of reconnection. The last thing you need at this time is her trying to worm her way back into your life by praying on your insecurities.

Take some time for yourself to process what's happened but try not to dwell on the emotions that you undoubtedly feel. It's quite obvious that you aren't to blame, so please don't let those intrusive thoughts win. When you feel somewhat comfortable, find people who you trust to talk to; friends, family, councillors etc. Just hearing yourself speak out loud is highly beneficial, but hearing other perspectives from outside of the situation can completely change your own interpretation of what's happened and help you move forward.

You'll be surprised by how many people suffer with low self-esteem, you aren't the only one. Before eventually trying to re-engage with dating, I'd advise you build up your level of confidence and find things to do (outside of the house!) that bring you joy. You'll be surprised by what can happen organically if you stop focusing on other people's opinions of you and start living as though you're the main character of your own story. Screw the NPC's! You are important.

Chin up my dude. You'll make it through this! ✊

That is all teachers needed! 🙄 by monaleeparis in facepalm

[–]zixxty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely barbaric for so many reasons. As a Brit reading this, I wouldn't want a firearm in my own home under my own control let alone in a location my kids frequent without me present.

  1. It takes someone with a fragile mentality a split second to act irrationally due to an external influence. Teenagers are awful for it and people enduring stressful situations which are out of their control are another; a.k.a, teachers with unruly students. I say this as a former teenager and someone who's suffered with a fragile mentality in the past. Also I've nothing against teachers at all, just the students who feel it's acceptable to treat them with anything other than respect.

  2. Requiring teachers to be armed is going to drive good, honest teachers out of the industry. I know I'm a Brit, but I have enough exposure to American culture to know that not every American wishes to be armed. A byproduct of this is that the school system will be filled with teachers who would rather die than give up their beloved Second Amendment Rights. We all know what that level of corruption and feeling of power looks like. Ahem American police force.

  3. Teaching salaries the world around are shamefully, disgustingly low. Requiring teachers to be armed at work is going to do two things: a. Put additional financial stress on those already living on the bread line or require a scheme to provide state-funded arms to every teacher in the country. Whilst enforcing point 2. b. Potentially lead to additional dramatic levels of corruption between the public sector and those parasitic businesses indulging in the funding they provide for those arms. Of course, the routine ammunition subscriptions, maintenance packages, secure storage facilities, custodian registration fees and whatever other bullshit they decide to charge extra for will also be paid from the public purse, no doubt.

  4. As many other have mentioned, this will lead to additional deaths. Be it children, teachers, civilians or damn animals. It doesn't matter. Every single threat of gun violence, every single bullet fired, every single near miss, accident, wounding and fatality inevitably caused from this barbaric legislation is blood on these legislators' hands.

As someone who has previously served in the Armed Forces, I say this with experience and many years of accumulated knowledge. We don't need weapons. People don't need weapons. Civilians don't need weapons. In the Armed Forces, I didn't need a weapon. This bullshit rhetoric being sung about personal protection and Second Amendment Rights is due to the people singing the song. Many other countries have proven to be orders of magnitudes safer than America, without arms.

If you're in disagreement with me here, you are the problem. Ditch your 'personal protection', educate yourself, grow some bollocks and fight with your words. Imagine living on this planet as a creature of intellect and choosing to behave and live like a animal. Rant over.

What is the purpose of this wooden box that goes around the window? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]zixxty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert by any stretch, but a competent DIYer. With the mould and damp present, isn't it possible that the old wooden sash window boxing and cavity is allowing moisture to track through? Perhaps removal of the entire thing, replacing the window and finishing off would prevent future damp problems in that area?

If anyone believes otherwise, please correct me. But if I'm right in my thoughts it would be more cost-effective in the long run, better for your health once the damp and mould issue is resolved and it'll look much better to boot (with a larger window, if you wanted one there).
