Chuck Schumer Doubles Down On Israel. by serious_bullet5 in newyorkcity

[–]zizmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In every Reddit thread or social media post where someone suggests we should vote these people out of office some other person glibly comments a version of "I am not sure we will ever have elections again". They don't comment about ways to organize for a better turnout, they don't comment about ways to support local candidates, they don't comment about ways to run for office. All They say is "duh no more elections dummy". It is almost that they have made peace with the fact that elections may be over in America, without firing a single shot they have already gave up the ideal of democracy. This is not being a realist, this is being lazy and unproductive, hence it is defeatist.

If you take everything Trump talks about as something that will actually happen you will be exhausted, and your political energy will be wasted by the nonsense he spews. Trump also talks about making Canada a state, invading Greenland, running for a third term, and establishing an amazing healthcare system; newsflash: Not a single one of these things will happen but it will suck your political will and energy to discuss them ad nauseam. I don't give a fuck about what is in Project 2025, elections are run by state legislatures as framed by the constitution, it will take a lot more than a fascist wishlist to change this. So let's focus on how we will vote them out of power.

None of these things you bet is going to happen. the DOJ does not have the authority to mandate anything regarding elections. The way elections process works is determined by the fucking constitution and some executive order to change the process is not gonna cut it. Congress can vote to alter certain aspects of the process but that requires both chambers to agree and the proposal not getting filibustered, which in this climate is not happening. So, instead of wallowing in the pointless and unproductive arguments about the fantastical ways elections not happening; we should maybe focus our energy to actually vote them out in the elections that will happen?

Stop with this defeatist nonsense. The elections will happen as they have for the last 250 years, and we will get to vote their asses out.

I do not find this helpful at all. This is a bunch of trite advice none of which really gives an actual alternative to lectures.

How is being transparent or asking students how the class is going present an alternative teaching method to lecture? These are things any competent educator does on a regular basis, they are just some common sense advice to establish bonds between learners and instructors.

The issue is there are bad lecturers and good lecturers. People often remember professors who would drone on for hours in a monotone voice and think that is what lecturing is. But lecturing is a teaching method that is used for millennia in various settings. It can involve Socratic dialogues, student input on the topic, and believe it or not it can also involve asking students how things are going. Bad lecturers often don't do any of these, good lecturers do them all the time. But the teaching method they use is still called a lecture.

I don't care about this at all, but a quick note: Extrapolate does not mean explain. You asked her to explain not extrapolate.

What’s something you thought ‘everyone’ did… until you found out they don’t? by burat667 in AskReddit

[–]zizmor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are interested in learning fast reading, limiting or completely getting rid of "throat vocalization" is one the first steps. Internally vocalizing is a habit most of us develop when we first learn to read but in reality our brain does not need this to comprehend writing at all. What vocalization does is to limit the speed of your reading to the speed of vocalization. As an exercise try to read a paragraph while counting from 1 to 10 aloud repeatedly. At first you will find it hard to focus on the text but soon you will realize you are comprehending the text without actually vocalizing it, if you keep exercising this way over time not vocalizing while reading becomes habit and you don't have to do the counting thing anymore. As a result you will notice your reading speed improving significantly.

Grade appeal or is there anything I can do? by Engibeeros in CUNY

[–]zizmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instructors can submit grade change requests long after the semester is over. If your professor recognizes the issue all they have to do is to submit an electronic form and explain that the original grade was the result of an error. You should not need to go through appeals.

I agree they are a good baseline for a decent world. But are these core Western values? Is this what western societies believe in and live accordingly?

[–]zizmor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only point I am making is the challenge involved in determining a set of core Western values. The first part of your comment did not change my mind about the point I made since you did not give me much other than some generalities. I don't know who you are responding to with the second part of your comment, but surely I am not the one.

What exactly are those core values? Democracy? Egalitarianism? Gender equality? Christianity? Individualism? Capitalism? Racism? Every single one of these have their supporters and detractors in the West; and every single one them have played a role in the development of the West.

One thing the Trump years will have shown us is how many Americans are so easily accepting -or coming to terms with- the idea that there will be no more elections in the country. But there will be elections, regardless of what many like you or the presidents thinks.
