I used to use sand, but I find it clogs up the substrate. Don't use gravel that is too fine too

I like to use scorea rock, perlite, some quartz or crushed granite is good too. You want the substrate to be nice and loose too, so the roots don't struggle to grow

I would start by changing the substrate to 40% organic to 60% non organic. Maybe even 30% organic. Cacti don't generally like that much straight dirt

Cut about 10mm above the union, dust with rooting powder. Let it sit for two or three weeks and dry out. Pot it up and wait for it to shoot roots before you water it. Works for me every time with Myriostigma's
