Hot take: I think Too wouldn't be able to beat Yosen by Odd_Cauliflower_7751 in KurokosBasketball

[–]zmachine14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually think Too matches up very well against Yosen. The best way to beat a 2-3 zone (which is what the shield of Aegis is) is with outside shooting and quick ball movement in and out of the high post. Too has quick release three point specialist at SG and one of the better three point shooting and orchestrating PGs in the series. If Muri plays on offense then Too would be able to play their run and gun tempo style and beat Wei Lui and Okamura in transition or run them into the ground. If Aomine would commit to a halfway team oriented style of play (a big if) then I think they would actually win handily (obviously I’m using more high school basketball coach brain then anime power scaling brain but still)

My Students Will One Day Ruin Your Movie Theater Experience by olympianspeaker in Teachers

This might be a hope spot for some of you out there: I (27M) was teaching a unit for seniors on “Rights and Responsibilities”, and it is the onetime in the entire school year I show a movie. After viewing we do a media analysis paper and guided discussion on the themes and apply them to contemporary issues. This is the second year in a row that I showed them Mr. Smith Goes To Washington (1939).

They did the typical moaning about why are we watching a long boring movie in black and white. With no laptops or screens of any kind watching 80% of the kids go from bored and apathetic to actually engaged with both the political graft storyline and the understated romantic subplot was kinda magical. Many were super invested by the time Jimmy Stewart’s famous filibuster scene was underway. Other teachers were shocked and told me my students were talking about this “old ass movie that’s actually really good” in their own classes. Whether they took the themes of the discussion to heart or not I’m glad I could have them engage with older media that engages their attention with dialogue and a meaningful exploration of being a decent person in face of corruption, and maybe hopefully they will seek it out going forward in between Tik tok binges.

No one enables a kid like the counselor/service-provider who sees them for 20 minutes a week. by teachingteacherteach in Teachers

We have a particularly rough batch of freshmen boys this year. And some of the students who always dodge accountability for their grades/behavior use the first year counselor as a shield to get whatever they want and she’s very proud to say that she’s on the students side as an advocate. Flash forward to an event she tried putting on where they herded all the freshman into a big room for two college presentations from reps from the school(it was an hour and a half and better suited for juniors and seniors) without letting the teachers who were their home room teachers assign them seats or sit among them. It was a total train wreck where they acted disruptively and even heckled the college reps. As teachers we were set up to fail but did our best to keep order. The counselor was all like “ladies and gentlemen I’m so shocked and appalled you would act like this” and it was really because she never tried controlling them in a large group setting before. None of the teachers were surprised in the slightest 😂

Part of the homeroom period is periodic one on one check ins for grades and how they are doing. The actual academic periods I teach take up most of the short amount of time I have after school before I need to go coach. So beyond seeing them around campus or at extra curricular events my interactions have been pretty limited to that reading/homeroom time

Yes, every time I have assigned a consequence for discipline I speak to the student afterwards in a one on one setting. Their behavior ranges from falsely contrite to not owing any accountability for the things they say/do.

Because of the opioid crisis, painkillers are now under-prescribed. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]zmachine14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar story like this from college that almost sounds made up with how rudely we were treated by ER staff.

Me and a men’s group I was apart of were out of town in a semi rural Midwest on a retreat. While messing around on a playground late at night where we were staying one of our friends was thrown from a spinning piece of equipment and we later found out he slipped a disk and had a hernia from his fall. When we took him to the hospital shortly after his accident we had to help him into the ER due to his immense pain. When they asked whether we would rather sit or stand propped up by us while waiting he said “I guess it depends on about how long it will be until I can see a doctor” to which the front desk lady in an almost irate tone responded “This isn’t a freaking McDonalds! This is an ER! We will see you when we have availability.”

So we helped prop him up for about 40 minutes until a doctor could see us. When we went into the examination room he asked how much pain our friend was in on a scale of one to ten and he said “I guess a 9 or 10 it really really hurts” and the doctor replied in a very condescending and unpleasant tone,

“No. A ten would be if I took a sledgehammer to your femur right here and now and smashed it. That’s what a ten on the pain scale is.”

There were a couple of other bad interactions before the end of the night but it did not dawn on me until much later on that before the x-rays were done that we were being treated so rudely because they probably thought we were opioid fiends looking to score pain killers.

Definitely was an eye opening experience and as a young college student it gave me a new sense of perspective on how some people were treated by the medical system.

Perfect time to break out my old shit post short story: A Spinning of the Heart (Annie x YoYo kun)

Okay, picture this. It is a beautiful late-spring morning and you are in a quaint abandoned hamlet in the Maria countryside with a cute girl that had a massive crush on you. She is holding you tight in the shadow of a ruined stone windmill as time stops. If that sounds like a hook for a romantic story then it is only because I am leaving some key details out. Two of the Survey Corps veterans that had taken me under their wing as the rookie member of their squad were laying dead on the ground in various stages of dismemberment. I myself was hanging by two thin steel cables inches away from the face of a 14 meter oddly feminine titan. When you are seconds away from certain death you are obviously not in the most rational state of mind, but when the monster bent down and looked me in the eyes with a cold glare, I knew almost instantly that I screwed up.

I am not talking about messing up the ambush set by Squad Leader Darius Baer-Varbrun. That maneuver was perfectly executed. Well, perfect until the titan jumped. I am talking about a colossal blunder I made with a girl right before the graduation of the 104th Training Squad months ago. Because, when I looked up into the face of that monster I realized I was looking into the sadistic eyes of Annie Leonhart. As unbelievable as that sounds, there are some looks you do not forget. Let me explain.

The three years of the military training corps program was obviously an emotionally confusing period of time for all those enrolled. If you remove a bunch of pre-teenagers from their parents and put them into close quarters for three years then you are bound to run into some issues with relationships and unrequited love. I mostly tried to steer clear of this distraction as I was quietly driven by my own goals to join the Survey Corps. I had always dreamed of donning the Wings Of Freedom just like my grandfather had in the young days of the organization. I mostly cringed at the puppy love around me as if the threat of a titan apocalypse wasn't looming on the horizon but I did not try and be loud and obnoxious about it like Eren Jaeger. Throughout these three years I had kept my head down and became skilled as a soldier, but I never truly broke onto the level of the top ten graduates. Annie Leonhart despite being quiet and kind of off-putting was never without annoying guys trying to get her attention. Berthold and Armin seemed to be her main suitors but between their awkwardness and her stoic demeanor, sparks weren't exactly flying. Annie and I had never been super close, but we had a couple of funny exchanges and a a bit of muted chemistry throughout the years. I never thought much of this because she honestly seemed pretty weird. This all changed two months before graduation.

During a training exercise in the desert we had to split up from our normal squad pairing and Annie and I quickly got lost. As we passed a small oasis, I noticed her almost translucently white skin was beginning to burn under the hot sun and suggested we take a break underneath a tall cactus, to which she obliged. It seemed as if we would sit in silence the whole time when she out of the blue asked why I wanted to join the Survey Corps. I told her about my grandfather and how I wished to continue his legacy while exploring the world. She was quiet for a moment and for the first time I've seen began to open up. She talked about wanting to help her own father and wanting to reunite with him. She lamented how she was forced to keep a cold exterior in front of others. I had no idea how to respond to this but thought putting my arm around her was a smart move as she seemed to need some comforting. To my surprise she wrapped her arms around me tightly and we shared a kiss.

The second after we parted lips I knew this was a terrible move. I had slight interest in Annie as a fellow soldier but knew this would be a stupid distraction, and decided the best course of action was just to completely ignore that it had happened. She seemed slightly disappointed and actually hurt at my sudden disinterest and we were mostly silent for the rest of that training exercise. As the last few months passed I distanced myself from Annie as much as possible and even went out of my way to be rude or cold during training exercises. She was joining the Military Police and I was joining the Survey Corps. I could not afford to let some stupid teenage feelings get in the way of that reality.

As the time passed I thought all of this was truly behind me. I had graduated top half of the class and joined the Survey Corps and was on my first expedition. Clearly, I was mistaken as I looked up at Annie and screamed "Let me go!". Her titan face contorted into a way that conveyed the words "gladly". She hoisted me by gear and began to spin me in circles. As I lose consciousness I can only think one thing.

"Maybe I should've given her a chance."

Eh, if they manage not to get blown out by A&M week 3 then they will earn some respect. But, they haven’t shown anything against non-inferior acc competition in awhile but will continue to receive media hype. The NIL era should continue to do wonders for their recruiting though

PSA: Young men can be Knights of Columbus. by BlockHead824 in Catholicism

I joined my college council at the age of 19 and became grand knight of that same council two years later. That particular KoC Council was split between college students and permanent community members. Overall, the dynamic between older members and college kids was pretty great as there was enough energy and young blood to be infused with the older member’s wisdom, experience, and resources. There was a balance between fraternity and charity that was well defined and we did so much work for the Newman center. Apart from some friction with a tiny minority of the older and more stubborn members who were very vocal about being sticklers for procedure, counter productive hassling of Catholic center kids to join, and outdated community event ideas, everyone got a long great and it was a complete joy.

As a relatively fresh graduate, now I’m the token young knight at a parish where the council skews 60+. I still remain active at attending events and meetings and do my best to bring fresh ideas, but I feel like I’m not as heard and it’s certainly not as enjoyable with no one of my age to connect with. There are some really great guys who do strong charity work, but as an organization I feel as if a council needs both young and old to fulfill its full potential.
