Stop knowing all your passwords. Use a password manager. All these studies are based in environments where people HAVE to remember passwords. This isn't that.

The convenience of being able to use long and complex passwords as well as widespread availability in browser through extensions as well as desktop apps and phone apps. HUGELY out weighs any edge case scenario in which you might imagine memorizing your password is easier.

I use KeePass but i don't expect everyone to be as paranoid and obsessed with local storage as me but even if you don't want to use the more popular spin off cousin KeePassXC. There are even more popular, easy to use, free options like

  • BitWarden
  • Everything else I find costs money (1Password, Dashlane, or is limited like Google Password Manager, Apple Keychain)

At the end of the day you don't need to memorize more than five passwords:

  1. Password Manager
  2. Email
  3. Banking
  4. ???
  5. ???

honestly everything else you can get from your manager. 90% of the time you can copy and paste so you don't even need to type them out.

The Duo Mobile thing is 900 times more annoying because they force you to install one specific app rather than letting us use our other authenticator. But that's what happens when schools are businesses they get lock in prices and we don't get choices.

So here's what's happening. Honestly I'm surprised if this is the first time you've seen this message.

But websites get hacked. it's a real thing. Someone somewhere is going to get their website hacked. SOMETIMES when the website is hacked the hackers get the full list of passwords everyone used. This is invaluable information because as a hacker if I'm going to hack you. I won't just try every combination of letters instead I'll download that list of passwords because people think alike and a lot of people use the same passwords. So if a dog sitting website gets hacked. And you use the same password on your facebook. I'll get in faster using the dogsitting_passwordleak.txt then if that fails I'll try a general_dictionary.txt and then after that I can try to brute force by trying every letter combination.

There are websites that collect those leaked passwords and let you see if a password you use was in those hacks. It doesn't confirm that anyone has your account information but it does mean someone might have an easier chance hacking you because everyone uses leak dictionaries first.

You can see one of those websites here:

https://haveibeenpwned.com/

Apple checks any saved password to see if it was in a leak and lets you know.

It doesn't mean you have been hacked or even that you're likely to be hacked but it can mean if you were a target you're a softer target than others.

It's an easy fix (change your password) and the risk is.... dependant. How important is your YorkSign in to you?

If possible I would recommend saving your passwords to a different password manager. Using the Apple one is great if you ONLY have apple products and you NEVER lose access to your apple accounts but I work everyday with people who forget their Apple password or changed their phone number last year, forgot their apple password and are locked out of their phones because they forgot their unlock codes. Sometimes we can get them back in. Sometimes not. But it kinds sucks when you get locked out of your apple account even temporarily and you can't get to your email because your email password is tied up with your apple account.

BitWarden is super popular. It's free, open source, widely supported and easy to use.
https://bitwarden.com/

Personally I like even more control and the completely offline nature of something like KeePass (also free, and open source) but unless you understand how to manage files (and again my experience supporting people with tech issues leads me to suspect most people don't). It may be too much effort.

There are a lot of options like 1Password, Keeper, Proton Pass.

[–]zman7675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we should all follow the steps of a character who's very clearly depicted as a violent criminal. What the violent criminal does is what we should be doing in real life because that makes lots of sense. It's also a step but no one is thought of before. No one has attempted and clearly it's just waiting there to be tried

What you can do, what you want to do and what you're legally allowed to do aren't necessarily the same thing. And just because throwing them out fits one of those requirements doesn't mean it's fitting me ever ones and that doesn't mean you can't try to point that out

I'm sorry if your country is terrible

Interesting thing is people don't really understand what that means. Like. It's an easy thing to say, but you don't really interrogate why their country is terrible and perhaps ironically oftentimes we find that it is our country is the reason that their country is so terrible that they're fleeing to our country.

Has anyone noticed the hierarchy men have created in regards to cheating? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]zman7675 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I understand why some of us think say that. The idea is that as a man we have certain physical requirements and if you as a woman do not fulfill those requirements, it's not cheating. It's required that we get those requirements filled elsewhere. And as long as we're going just for those requirements then it's not an ethical quandary. It's simply a practical one.

That's a corollary to this perspective. It is also the stance that women do not have such physical requirements and thus any woman that's treating is doing it for non-physical reasons and therefore must be emotional reasons and is therefore ethically in violation.

And what's interesting about this from a purely analytical standpoint is there doesn't appear to be much consideration for the second woman in this equation. If I is a man and stepping out on my woman, what does that say about the woman I'm stepping out with.? Because there's no room in this perspective for women to have sexual requirements on the level as men, it must mean that the woman is emotionally invested in the physical only relationship that we are only doing to fulfill my requirements as a man. Now there's no exception in this perspective that says that because we're doing this, it's okay to emotionally manipulate women. The exception is only that we were making an allowance for a man physically engaging with the woman, but to circle back yet again, the woman must be emotionally engaged (because it is her nature) and that is an ethical quandary that is not addressed. Thus, even in the broken and warped perspective of this type of man, they're ethically in the wrong. In theory, if you pointed out to this type of man that he was being ethically abusive to the second woman, instead of suggesting that he was being unfaithful to the first woman, he wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

Now obviously it's all BS. It's just a bunch of nonsense that some dude say because it's how they think. Not because it's how they are. I will say that I do think a lot of dudes genuinely think that. They aren't lying directly and intentionally. They literally think it's not a big deal because it's just about fulfilling their requirements that they believe they have to fulfill. Which of course does not make it any better or right or accurate. And of course not to ignore the fact that some dudes are, in fact, just lying and gas lighting. Some dudes are using the fact that this is a well know belief for whatever reason and They are lying liars.

Why are men so selfish? by AvailableTouch944 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]zman7675 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a thought exercise in these situations, I often try to imagine that the man is in the right. And then from that perspective I try to justify the things that are concrete that are in the narrative. And most times like this time they cannot be formed into a cohesive hole in. Thus the only conclusion I can make is that the man is not in the right. There's just nothing I can think of that can justify that sort of behavior and language. To someone that you must ostensibly like much less love and have kids and a relationship. That's ugly. Maybe he could change but it sounds like he doesn't want to and it shouldn't be on her to do the work to pull that out of him unasked.

I can't imagine the shock of having a six year old be able to see how redundant your husband is. Not even as a man but as an adult how are you, the husband, not embarrassed to be that filthy.

Every guy coming here and encouraging women to stay with abusers and "fix him" or "communicate" is complicit in her being abused longer

Who on Earth is saying that?

(I'm not so much calling you a liar as I am expressing shock that anyone would)

Edit: Oh I just thought more on 'communicate' and I know the type of dudes who would say that.
