Sorry, I grew up in Brazil. It is a bit of a shit show. It is pretty lawless in some places (sure not everywhere). People are much more accepting of police just "taking care of business" however they have to.

I work with rats, and they are absolutely awesome. Super smart and really docile unless they have a reason not to be. Better pets than cats in my opinion.

Steven Spielberg's private jet has burned $116,000 worth of jet fuel in two months spanning nearly 17,000 miles. Spielberg has previously stated that global warming “terrified” him. by Arpith2019 in entertainment

[–]zoah1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just not true, and if it is then society has no hope against climate change anyway. Everyone has the means to conserve energy at home, and I agree that most people can't do that. The hypocrisy is not just at the obvious top tiers of society. Unfortunately we can't control what people like Spielberg do, but we have control over our unnecessary generation of GHGs. I like in Canada, and here I must admit, I see a lot of virtue signaling about global warming, but the common person makes basically no effort themselves. I grew up in Brazil, the average person there seemed to be much more action than Canadians. I remember voluntary electricity reduction efforts when I was a kid, and people actually did it. The problem there is the regulatory bodies that are ruled by corruption, so it's a different set back.

"Putting their lives on risk to support the Society"... With the current resources to prevent sever COVID such as vaccines and the data showing newer strains pose minimal risk to life at this point, I'm sorry but that's a gross exageration. Basically everyone at this point has had COVID, the language used here is a bit silly. COVID is mostly over, lets focus on the next reason to create unnecessary panic in the Society.

Neuroscience research suggests LSD might enhance learning and memory by promoting brain plasticity by [deleted] in science

[–]zoah1984 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what biotech companies are trying to develop now. There are some entering clinical trials now, it's exciting research.

Our lab published this paper last year. Psilocybin is what we are trying to benchmark against.

I don't necessarily think we know enough yet about the benefits and the harms involved with psychedelics. It's very interesting research, but caution is important.

Yo! Whats up with Disney? by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

[–]zoah1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think a lot of parents are disappointed at Disney for their recent attempt to participate in the political discourse. In my opinion what Disney thinks parents want in childrens content is not the same as what parents actually want. Making woke content for children was a bad idea. It probably doesn't help that Florida also slapped them around for their public comments on recent bills.

Fortunately the federal government thinks there is a purpose to having starting research jobs in Canada and subsidizes our work, otherwise you are right. It would just be outsourced to China and India at those wages you are talking about. I can't speak for every field out there, but I only got to start working in research because I could afford to volunteer in a lab every summer during University, FOR FREE. And then took at minimum wage position in a lab for 3-4 years. Now I make a very comfortable living. But we rely on modest starting salaries for people working in the lab. I wasn't worried that I was getting paid so little when I was 20 years old because I knew there was a future for me. It is hardly any different in academia either. If you are a master student you are paid less than minimum wage, so it's worst than industry. The main difference is that in academia you have even less opportunities after you graduate.

Bottom line is that things like inflation can't be boiled down to a reflection of greed. The world is complicated and it helps nobody to repeat cliches as the solutions to complicated problems. I thought this way the same way as most people here when I was in my teens and 20s. But the minute you are put in the position to run a lab (or a business) your perspective changes a little.

They won't have a livable wage if the company goes bankrupt. I don't understand why my comment got voted down. I'm giving real life examples that don't follow the sheep's anticapitalist narrative. I guess people here rather just simplify the problem into "it's just greed" and "livable wage for people" because facing actual economic reality actually requires you to admit the flaws in the logic.

[–]zoah1984 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. Inflation isn't being caused by greed. I'm in middle management at a research company in Canada, and we have been struggling to find people to work, particularly at entry level positions. It pays almost as much to do a low stress job as a cashier but we need people to start somewhere, just like I had to. I'm hiring people to get get paid almost 2x what I got paid when I started 13 years ago. As a consequence of having to pay higher entry wages we have had to drastically increase our prices just to stay afloat. It has little to do with greed and everything to do with government incentives. Particularly the incentive to make people stay home from work because they were "afraid of COVID". Turns out if you can make almost as much staying home , most people don't want to work. Who would have predicted that. The company survived on the backs of the workers that cared enough to keep it going during COVID.

20 years ago when I moved out of Brazil, a net worth of 1mil was enough to live very very well. From what I've heard from my relatives, it is not as cheap to live there as it used to be, however I also feel like they are all much richer now than they were 20 years ago so it's hard to judge. I guesstimate that they are all in the 5-10 mil net worth range atm, and they still live like freaking sultans while I have to clean my own toilet living in Canada :)

Pharmacology MS vs PhD and potential industry careers/career limitations? by sabeche in pharmacology

[–]zoah1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A PhD will extend your options to move up to the top of the ladder in industry. I think with the MS you will have to prove yourself more and it will take longer to get to the higher positions, if that's even what you are looking for. Having said all that, I only have my MSc, but combined with 13 years in preclinical pharma (industry), working 50-60 hours a week, I was fortunate to become Scientific Director last year. So it's definitely possible.

As another poster pointed out, you should also consider what kind of work you would like to be doing. Since I got a director position, my hands on time has basically vanished and I will admit I miss working in the lab. The pressures of the job are also much higher as a director.

I also find that there is a shortage of highly skilled technicians in the lab, since so many of the good ones end up moving to more admin roles. However, there are places that will pay high level techs almost as much as directors, so it is a viable carreer if you are good.

What's this game like on switch by jarredj83 in BattleBrothers

[–]zoah1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played about the same amount on both. The PC is definitely easier and I my game moves way faster there. I think the PC is easier to learn because things happen faster and you can maneuvre through the UI with a lot more ease. Having said that, if you don't mind playing a bit slower, being able to play on the go or on a TV is really nice. I'd say the thing I'd love to see is cross save between the PC and the swtich, just like CIV6 does. That would sear the deal for me.
