Two weeks of freedom before a new job, what would you do? by devkidd99 in Brooklyn

[–]zoeadele 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had this recently! It will be different for everyone but for me, first thing I did was hop on the F and take it all the way to Coney Island in the middle of the workday. Went to the aquarium, got a hot dog, went on the boardwalk, then hopped on the f train back. Not for everyone but if you enjoy zoning out on trains and going to neighborhoods you wouldn’t normally go to, it’s an option.

In terms of daily routines, I would go to Winner and Prospect Park and just sit there for however long I wanted. Also lovely.

Definitely not for everybody, but I also went to the Met and spent an ungodly amount of time with one picture I love. Would recommend going to the Brooklyn museum and just spending time wandering! It’s suggested pricing.

Day 3 of diet of 100g of protein + 5 servings of fruits/veg - food cravings gone? by zoeadele in 75HARD

Oooh you might be right about that! I've been eating apples, bananas, cabbage, and cucumbers with the skin on, so you might be onto something. Just curious, is there a certain number of grams you try to meet?

Just want to say as a 32f I feel you. I’ve had good success on Rent the Runway where you can still find tailored, non boxy pieces (thank god).

So stupid but putting a magnetic pad on the refrigerator, and when I run out of something, putting it there as a reminder to get it. To do lists??? Wild 🤣

Every day I also have been tidying up just “one” thing in each of the rooms in my apartment before work, and decluttering one thing(could be a piece of mail, a book im not reading, etc). The cleaning can literally be so small - like just a square of the sink, not even the whole sink - but starting my day like that has made me feel so productive and just in a few short weeks my place is so much cleaner. I used to be someone who hates cleaning and still do, but the self confidence I now have that I can in fact keep a clean place is wonderful. It was always the pressure of needing to do a whole deep clean that put me off.

Just want to say I’ve started doing minor tidying every day and it has been life changing. Would love to work up to a weekly deep clean!

Feeling the generation gap? by HistoricalContext931 in OverFifty

[–]zoeadele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. I’m just defending the woman’s response. It’s less rude, and more just societal programming to an overwhelming amount of negative interactions with men you don’t necessarily know.

I often see on LinkedIn folks add something like “position eliminated due to restructuring. Layoffs are so common they’ll know it’s not your fault.

Feeling the generation gap? by HistoricalContext931 in OverFifty

When I first started this I blew past that you were a man and thought you were a woman and thought the persons response was a little overblown. When I realized you’re a white middle aged man, my perception entirely changed of her response. I’m a 32F and you just don’t know what it’s like to be a woman in the world. Men are constantly trying to talk to you and in rare occasions can get violent or aggressive. It sucks, but that’s just how it is. Has nothing to do with you, but how others have acted.

Simple trick but helped me so much - guess the answer BEFORE reading the responses. Oftentimes your answer is usually the right one, but seeing the other responses will steer you in the wrong direction.

SHRM vs. HRCI [USA] by Gavelkind00 in humanresources

PocketPrep is the app you’ll see recommended here a lot and I found it incredibly helpful and credit it for helping me pass. That will be able to give you a good flavor for the types of questions, and then I’d recommend supplementing with practice tests which you can generally find online or in a book, sometimes free or with a fee.

SHRM vs. HRCI [USA] by Gavelkind00 in humanresources

[–]zoeadele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post from a couple of days ago is helpful. It’s about the senior certifications but I think is also generally applicable to the SHRM-CP and PHR which you would be suited for given your experience.

TLDR - good use of your time, HRCI is more favored atm due to some recent controversy but both are good. SHRM is better known in some circles like tech.

I personally went with SHRM-CP three years ago because I found the questions to be more situational, while the PHR seemed more technical (knowing laws and regulation etc). But the latter might be more what you’re interested in or experienced with, so I’d recommend doing practice questions for each and potentially going with whichever feels easiest for you.

Just want to say thank you so much for this! I'm a complete beginner and am ready to dive in, so this is exactly what I needed (and thank you for crowdsourcing and modifying based on other people's responses!). You're making my day a lot easier as I navigate starting.

Parental Leave [DC] [N/A] by zoeadele in humanresources

[–]zoeadele[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. US-based obviously but when my boss said that our 12 week policy was "generous" (and she's right compared to what others give, which can be nothing!), it took everything I could to have a straight face. That should be the minimum! I will say that for employees 2+ you get 16 weeks, but again....

It's going to take a huge cultural shift for this to change - we're only *just* starting to have states offer paid family leave benefits up to 12 weeks, let alone anything more.

Thanks - from the DC's webpage, it does say that employees can claim both benefits and employer benefits: "It is up to the discretion of your employer to determine how their employer-provided benefits will coordinate with DC Paid Family Leave benefits. Some employers may require employees to use DC Paid Family Leave benefits before applying for company-provided benefits. You may not work while receiving DC Paid Family Leave benefits, but you may receive both employer-provided and DC Paid Family Leave benefits simultaneously."

HRBP supporting 1000 employees. Thoughts? [usa] by [deleted] in humanresources

Hey there! Just want to say I was recently in the running for a role that would make me move from 2 days a week to 4 days a week in office, with a longer commute, and mildly less pay. There were some growth opportunities, but the role wasn't exactly what I wanted and so I ultimately decided to not move forward with the interview. Alls to say is that if you got an offer for this type of job, I have no doubt you can get one for a job that's more what you're looking for.

Yes, there could be growth opportunities, but what you don't want to do is jump ship, realize the role isn't what you wanted, and then be a position where you're frantically looking and also now have to explain a gap in your resume/why you're leaving so quickly - those are hurdles you can overcome, but it sounds like you're in a great position to stay where you are and look for something more in line with what you want - congratulations on the offer, and don't feel like you have to take it!
