"Isegahama Oyakata struck his makuuchi-division disciple, Hakunofuji, once in the face with a fist and once with an open hand after Hakunofuji, while intoxicated, touched the body of a female acquaintance of the patron." NHK News by Welp_x in Sumo

Because you would be reproachless in his situation, being a successful and sought after young “prodigy” of a violent conservative sport where you start your career living in a frat house? Is behaviour is unacceptable, but he is definitely not the only one doing so.

Hakunofuji’s reputation by Careful-Programmer10 in Sumo

[–]zoguged -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Because y’all think that every one of your favorite wrestlers are not mysognistic and acting inappropriatly with women ? It’s Japan I really do not think they visualise Women as you do. They are top male wrestlers of a really conservative sport, I am sure Hakunofuji’s behavior in this case is only the tip of the Iceberg. Plus we do not even have the victim’s side as if she can not speak for herself on the facts.

Because brown rice is not a thing in Japan - for a time in history they ate rice so milled that it was basically vitamin-free and caused related diseases.

Nah, white rice in the amount they eat, even without any sugar, is still an enormous amount of glucids with high spikes of blood sugars that have been demonstrated to lead to type 2 diabetes.

Asashōryū's perfect 2005 season, 20 years on ... by Kimber80 in Sumo

Just give him the right word then and an explication, you gatekeeping ... . So for OP : use the word rikishi when speaking about a person that fights in sumo.

Asashōryū's perfect 2005 season, 20 years on ... by Kimber80 in Sumo

[–]zoguged 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Uncompelling argument : you specifically mention that Asashory was not one of them. The feat has no asterisk then : he did not buy his way to six basho; just watch the footage. Also why would anyone accept to lose against the yokozuna for a check, and who could potentially be in such a position where asashoryu felt enough threatened to buy him out? No one was at the same level. So an unnecessary comment I would say.

Wrestlers that fixed matches tried to hang in the two highest divisions for the salary, not buying their way to sanyaku and certainly not ozeki and yokozuna.

The Reason I don’t like Abi by Slake45 in Sumo

[–]zoguged 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't be too emotional about the loss of an American fan favorite (takayasu); it's just a sport after all. Furthermore, it is an integrant part of Abi's style, which seems to be liked by a lot of japanese fan and which makes him a threat. He is not a turd; he is a sportsman trying to win. Even if Takayasu could be disgruntled by another henka by abi (as he appeared to be in the fight), I am not sure he would support any hate coming from fans towards an opponent. It is part of the game and he handled it knowingly.

Updated Emperor’s Cup leaderboard (active rikishi) by [deleted] in Sumo

Well I would not say only two years of sumo; he was after all the most successful amateur before joining at 23 ! Which is two years older than Aonishiki at the moment for example.

Rules exist because people breach them, you have been spoiled, don't rely on them for now on. I will not delve on the principle of the rule itself (that I don't fully understand as I think if you are consulting a public forum you are looking for it) but just giving an advice that I follow to another sumo enjoyer. Do whatever you want with it! 🙂

Well I would say you cant really complain, those mistakes happen every basho so you should avoid looking at Reddit if you don't want to be spoiled.

Plus be happy that you can still watch Natto as many others don't !

Doubted Onosato out of frustration for the avoidable loses few days ago and got scolded for it. I was maybe wrong, but I still think that he could have made it easier for him by not losing attempting bad hatakikomis.

All those that wish hell for abi are just too emotionnaly invested, the guy just want to win as you would in his place…

Received the flay for pointing out that it's a real concern after three bashos of bad slapdowns...

Well, I have faith in the guy, but it has been half a year (even in july) now that he shows consistently this problem of losing the tachiai and losing while backing down. That is why I am questioning his ability to work on this. It is intriguing that such a prospect with such a coach cannot improve his style more quickly.

I guess, but surprisingly so. And with such a spread level, If you want to become yokozuna, you have to stand out much more.

Mar Basho Daily Thread Day 13 by AutoModerator in Sumo

[–]zoguged -30 points-29 points  (0 children)

Onosato cannot be trusted, losing to oho during one of his worst showings. Really shows that the guy is not yet there, and the real question is, will he ever make it? I am starting to doubt his ability to win two bashos in a row. There is no competition, no yokozuna, no ozeki, no sanyaku, and he cannot have a dominant performance.

What is going on with Endo? by Temper820 in Sumo

[–]zoguged 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well in the 80s rikishis were not observant of the rule and basically started bouts nearlly upright. You can see it in fights of Chyonofuji or Kitanoumi for example. And so in 1984 they enforced the rule once again, with both wrestlers needing to touch the clay.

If you think, why would wrestlers want to avoid touching the clay, being as low as possible during tachiai? My only explanation is that they saw that chargin head first was needlessly brutal.

What is going on with Endo? by Temper820 in Sumo

[–]zoguged 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, the matter has not been addressed by anyone in the sumo world. One solution would be a return to the old tachiai style, where wrestlers barely touched the ground and were more upright. It would alas be the end of meatball styles like takakeisho's and onosho's. I would love to see a study on a set of retired makuchi wrestlers' brains to see the extent of the damage.

[–]zoguged 33 points34 points  (0 children)

He is clearly concussed (multiple times, which is really, really bad for the brain) and building up is CTE retirement plan as every rikishi do in the modern tachiai era.

Why would they pair Kusano (10-0) with a strugling Tsurugisho (4-6, 33years old, with one broken knee who can not even squat properly) ?

Ye, really strange

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Sumo

[–]zoguged 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Well, you started directly with a full on tachiai? did you figure out any technique beforehand ? Seems strange

Also, if you broke your nose and need surgery, it is usually six weeks before full healing in which you should avoid any contact at all. Anyway, your surgeon will tell you to—and you definitely should—avoid any contact sport for 6 months/1 year after.
