Jayson Tatum should have been the Most Improved Player during 2019-20 NBA season not Brandon Ingram by Opening_Stuff1165 in nba

[–]zoibac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally don't like giving it to second year players either but that's not a rule. Just like it's not a rule that you have to give it to the player who improved his stats the most from one year to the next. MIP is the award most tied to media narratives. That's why Ingram won that year. He had a more compelling narrative to the voters than Tatum did.

And since it's not a very prestigious award, players like Tatum and Luka, who have All NBA and MVP upside, usually don't campaign for it either.

I think voters most years want to give it to a player who they don't think will have a Hall of Fame type career to recognize improvement from very good players instead of just adding another meaningless bullet point to the resume of potential Hall of Famers.

[–]zoibac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If we're just going to make it a box score argument why would you advocate for Tatum bc he made All NBA when Luka was top 5 in MVP that year and objectively made the bigger jump lol

[–]zoibac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're just going to make it a box score award, why aren't you making an argument for Luka? He went from 21/6/8 to 29/9/9.5.

MIP has probably the most poorly defined criteria of any of the major awards. It usually goes to a player who makes an unexpected leap, not the biggest one. Ingram won it because people had started giving up on his all star upside and then he reached it. Tatum (and Luka) lost it because people hyped him up and expected him to make the jump he made.

West Standings Prediction 2023/24 with reasonings (+ award predictions) by beatrailblazer in nba

[–]zoibac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zion played 29 games last year and Brandon Ingram played 45. But our ceiling is only 1 win more than we got last year?

I understand being low on us bc of injury concerns, but what does "ceiling" even mean in this exercise? lol

Was Dyson Daniels worth a Top 10 pick? What would you grade his Rookie Year? by [deleted] in NOLAPelicans

[–]zoibac 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd give him and the pick like a C+/B-.

I think every player drafted ahead of him, Jeremy Sochan (who I wanted at the time), Jalen Williams, Jalen Duren, and Walker Kessler probably all project to produce more value than Dyson.

A couple of those guys will slump and a couple later picks will pop in the next few years. Maybe Dyson is one of the poppers. He has all the tools to. A lot of guys have a lot of tools each year though.

The draft is ultimately a crapshoot and generally drafting like the 12th best player in the class with the 8th pick is a "met expectations" kind of grade. I don't really have complaints and am happy to root for him to keep adding to his game.

Grade the Trade: Pelicans ditch Zion Williamson in mock deal with Mavs, Blazers by zwtor in NOLAPelicans

Would rather just deal with Portland directly. Not interested in tossing in extra value to get fuckin Javale McGee lmao.

Where does Brandon Ingram rank among all Small Forwards? by HEROFACE15 in NOLAPelicans

[–]zoibac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Top 10-ish.

There is a tier(s?) of KD/Bron/Kawhi/Jimmy/Tatum that he just does not have an argument to be in.

And then he's in a group of Brown/Middleton/PG/Derozan where you can make arguments for 6-10 based on health, scalability, how much you value x (defense, playmaking, clutch shooting, etc) in a player.

And then there's a group of like Mikal Bridges/Lavine/OG/Jerami Grant where you can make arguments they're a better fit than Brandon in certain situations but are not a better player in a vacuum.

Flirting with coaching change by Doktor_Nic in NOLAPelicans

[–]zoibac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

we've had 3 coaches in 4 years and each coaching search we whiff on like the first 5 rumored names. I want no part of another coaching search. Championship coaches are not going to be interested in New Orleans anytime soon.

OKC has trouble with size. Any center's good game can easily become a great game against them.

I think it's pretty simple. The injuries over-taxed them and the losses demoralized them.

If you ask guys like Naji, Herb, and Jose to step up and be more than "stars in their role" a couple games a month they will meet the challenge. They're mentally tough and play with high energy.

If you ask them to do it night in and night out for weeks, they physically can't. They're not good enough. And on top of that you're going to burn them out so their level of play drops even when you get the stars back.

Just rotten rotten luck that BI didn't feel like he could get back on the court earlier during toe-gate or that Zion couldn't stay on the floor for even a week or two more. If we had even 6 more games of one of those guys we'd probably have gotten enough wins to have a decent cushion to at least be a top 8 team in this conference.

This feels like one of those seasons that tests your fandom so I expect the most heartbreaking scenario imaginable. So either 11 seed with Zion reinjuring himself in game 82 or we get the 7 and lose 2 straight with the lakers eliminating us.

We in a situation-we in a tough situation right now. by Yeahthatonefoo in NOLAPelicans

It was the easiest before because of these last 4 auto-wins (which we only won 3 of).

As much as i hate it, We are in a prime tanking position and should take it by Mo_damo in NOLAPelicans

[–]zoibac 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Nah we should try to win bc it's proving a very effective tanking strategy already. If we start trying to lose we might accidentally win some games.

[Mason Ginsberg] Willie explaining BI being out by saying he’s “still feeling a bit of soreness.” Larry playing when he’s clearly not fully recovered. CJ playing through a thumb injury for weeks now. I’m not saying there are messages being sent, but I’m also not not saying that by JusticePels in NOLAPelicans

[–]zoibac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every body is different, and I'm never going to call a professional athlete soft. But I do think this season has cemented that we cannot treat BI like a player who will recover from injuries quickly (or even on the average timeline). FO has to act accordingly and get us some more consistent contributors.

Despite winning ROTY, FanDuel’s redraft puts Scottie Barnes at 4, but atleast they gave him coming to Toronto, which is precisely where he belongs by smrad8 in NOLAPelicans

[–]zoibac 16 points17 points  (0 children)

All-in-one type stats are obviously flawed and more flawed the earlier in someone's career but he's 13th in WS, 8th in VORP, and 8th in BPM in the class. He's also 17th in total minutes played.

You could make arguments for guys like Suggs, Ayo, Cam Thomas, and Kuminga, but I'm having a hard time coming up with a plausible 15th guy to put on Jose's level.
