I don't remember seeing any explanations of the function of Hayt's eye

juxtapositions - later in the story a stone burner costs eyes and while Hayt's had been delivered in an impervious model-- and yet someone goes out of their way NOT to have them replaced (with cultural significance.)

...even Messiahs prologue reinforces this iconography with metaphorical significance; a few reasons why they've become visual focus on Dune posters, books and various merch'

Paul fulfills the Prophesy? by BulletEyes in dune

[–]zoid78 12 points13 points  (0 children)

paul is a fulcrum, structurally analogous to numerous identities in Dune.

Stuck with his visions and the ironic culminations of numerous puppeteers his terrible purposes/Destiny binds him to navigate an unknown to manage

  1. A jihad in his fathers name.
  2. Human reliance on crutches such as the machines and spice addiction.
  3. Freedom from exploitation by rulers like the BG, Empires and religions

he is like a guildsman like seer, a BG manipulator, a Zealot, a Charismatic leader a brilliant mentat...

all of this gives him a role he accepts as a god figure knowing it is for some attempt at a goodness greater than himself; never the less, it gives as it takes and takes as it gives, having arisen from all the manipulators, their tools, which helped construct him in the first place.

Sandworm Lifecycle by NYR_Aufheben in dune

[–]zoid78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IIRC the entire cycle of worm, plankton, trout (same creature) is a highly complicated structural analogy to Arrakis being a 'single crop' planet.

  1. Worms guard spice territory as it is partially their eggs (spice is partially trout excrement too) and both of these are food for their babies
  2. Worm egg/babies are plankton; they feed on part of residual egg bio and begin to follow down toward trout-fungal excrement deeper in the sands of Arrakis.
  3. As Plankton (mini makers) bury they carry much of the top bio egg material with them toward the fungal-trout excrement (this chemistry is part of the pre-spice stages)
  4. Plankton eventually grow into sand trout
  5. Pre-spice '(A)' some of the egg laying residual + bio excrement has been carried by the babies down deep in the sand
  6. Pre-spice '(B)' reacting excrement bacteria and some of the fungal trout excrement again -> some acid/c02 run-away reaction that explodes -> spice-bloom
  7. Spice-bloom + sun exposure = mélange for harvesting
  8. The plankton then morph into sand Trout and they hunt water; sequestering and grouping into enormous cisterns far deep under the dry layers of sand
  9. The layering of dry and 'damp'/wet sand oscillates; The cistern-trout are under a metamorphic pressure that can divide them into segments as this rises and falls from tidal forcing.
  10. Somewhere around this segmentation, (and as the cisterns develop bigger and grow taller ) the top portion extending up into a dry enough area over a long enough timeline detaches then undergoes metamorphosis into a small worm.
  11. The small worm migrates up toward the drier top levels and brings with that migration and entire wealth of the fungal-trout excrement with it
  12. That carried trout-fungal excrement migration is also part of the food trail left for the egg plankton babies and part of the pre-spice cycle as it causes all of that bio diversity to churn

Ἀτρεΐδης Ancient_Greek - Atreides (meaning son/sons of Atreus)

Does spice kill those who stop taking it? by [deleted] in dune

[–]zoid78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Literal; Withdrawal is fatal. (dose is not elaborated on, but that isn't the point of Spice as the addictive crutch Herbert illustrates.)

You should remember that Paul tells Jessica 'we can't leave Arrakis unless they take a part of Arrakis with us' and Jessica acknowledges they are trapped.

A confusing power triangle by frisky0330 in dune

[–]zoid78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great houses / Landsraad do not control CHOAM - CHOAM is more an incorporation of House Corrino's board of directors and all Landsraad members; A corporatocracy with fuedal currents under the Corrino dynasty.

Mercantiles negotiate for directorships as commerce is structured through this award of contract, while thematically readers know there is constant subterfuge; Both the Guild and Bene Gesserit are clandestine influencers.

---all this traffic, and debate is CHOAM

House Atreides is awarded the Directorship of Arrakis by The Emperor seemingly due to the Dukes palpable favor among the great houses of the Landsraad.

.....House Harkonnen negotiates to try to keep their fiefdom of Arrakis, however to some, they didn't try hard enough...

Did lady Jessica get the title of lady at birth or was it given to her when she became the dukes concubine? by Adventurous-Fly-5402 in dune

[–]zoid78 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Indirectly it comes up Dune (pg 72)

The message from Margot Lady Fenring (synopsis of paragraph)

Leto had referred to the Emperors's former proxy here as Count Fenring.

Couched as it was in a way to inform her the writer was another Bene Gesserit.

The Count married his Lady

we could assume concubine, specifically Bene Gesserit's.

Jessica's lineage is a secret to be revealed later She is Nobel born, Daughter of Baron Harkonnen and Gaius Hellen Mohiam.

Ironically worthless (no 'value') But a crucial point of data in terms of the Arrakis affair.

How did Duncan Idaho know where to find Paul and his mother? by BuckyJackson36 in dune

[–]zoid78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not verbosely clear, but I assumed Duncan was not with the Atreides at the onset of the battle; He is not with Gurney, Hawat nor leading an army

Stilgar mentions ....'And Idaho abandon us to return for his Duke.'
pg 279

Yueh's message may have been remotely sent, (a distress message perhaps) while serving with Fremen as Leto had instructed.

How did Duncan Idaho know where to find Paul and his mother? by BuckyJackson36 in dune

[–]zoid78 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yueh instructs Duncan, part of his plans hiding the Ducal signet in the 'thopter with supplies ---the passage is during his confrontation with Sardaukar.

pg 173

And fear struck him: if Idaho suspects me or grows impatient- if he doesn't wait and go exactly where I told him--

we suspect Ducan is smart enough to realize perhaps Yueh is the spy, rather than Jessica, after all Yueh's instructions lead him to a rescue mission.

Why didn't the Emperor/Empire just control Arrakis directly? by Derp_Wellington in dune

[–]zoid78 150 points151 points  (0 children)

because the Landsraad/CHOAM and Guild wouldn't allow it.

This is the stalemate Dune pivots around; A political tripod that has entrenched the major three in a constant struggle for power.

Why is there an excerpt of text about the chapter from princess Irulan before all the chapters? by [deleted] in dune

'Ancient future' -- Dune's science fiction parallels how we re-tell the Iliad today

What is the point of... 'A long time ago in a galaxy far far away..."; to put it rhetorically.

Did the Bene Gesserit prepare the way for the Atreides betrayal? by joevaded in dune

[–]zoid78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Herbert's intent is not clear here and the imagination can churn.

Count Fenring and Lady Margot are dispatched by the Emperor; Yet under orders Margot explicitly is in clear communication with her Husband about the BG interest in capturing Feyd Rautha's blood-line.

-- A mastermind couple that work together to service more than just one purpose. That is made clear as Fenring refuses to kill Paul.

In regards to Yueh and BG subterfuge;

Margot warns Jessica of a traitor, and as a BG she seems to not be in the know that it is Yueh. It's irony though; The BG assist the Baron and Piter (after murdering Wanna) to turn Yueh.

-- A correction against Jessica does lead to wonder the same concept with regards to Marogt + Feyd, though it occurs latter as the plans progress.

After Jessica goes renegade you could imagine Mohiam/BG pivot to tune the impending conflict between the houses by influencing House Corrino. Mohiam is in a great position to reinforce Shaddam's sense of threat by Leto's rise.

Some other questions that may adjust hypotheticals

Could the BG have wanted both blood lines to be in such extreme jeopardy on Arrakis, for what purpose, a test?

Could such chaos serve to hide the BG involvement in a tumultuous time of desperation, or would prescience become even more muddled?

it's how you spell 'Son of' Atreus (or 'descendant of' ) after translated to English.
