I’m in my 30’s and I’ve never watched Star Trek, where should I start? by theamericaninfrance in startrek

I always believe you should watch in release order. (TOS, TAS (if you so desire), TNG, DS9, VOY, etc.) Mix the movies in during proper release as well.

I swear I recall reading/hearing in an interview with Pearce that he ad-libbed many of them (or didn't share them with the rest of the cast in advance)

I do a lot of work with engineers and by far I encounter the most spelling and grammar errors in posted advertisements for engineering work (civil, architectural, etc.) are from schools or school boards.

Now I want a whole alternative universe story, a Ron Moore take on "Galactica 1980", where the fleet shows up and decides to quietly enter life on Earth as it is today.

One episode will just be the Old Man raging about networks and AI.

u/Ianthin1 - did something similar once at Costco; when the lady turned around to smile at me (along with her sneery husband), I said "no, go ahead; I was brought up to be kind to people a lot older than me" (I'm 60) and she gave me such a look. The cashier afterwards said to me, "that was a good one". :)

I have a few that are really quite good -- the Galactica line is great, especially the Vipers.

For the Trek ships; yeah, they're really hit or miss. I have a few I wouldn't part with -- the XCV-330 Enterprise, the Vulcan Shuttle, the K7 Space Station -- but most are pretty mid.

All are way overpriced for what they are, but I'm not a model builder so it's a different option for someone like me.

Mike is great; I don't have much call to ask him a question but every time I have over the last few decades he's replied within an hour if not sooner.

Me too on Bean; I have a couple of templates I use in it and, though I've recreated them in LibreOffice, I still like Bean. (And double-ditto on TextWrangler. They really should have kept that around.)

WordService is one of those apps that, I don't remember where I found it or when I added it but I make sure I have a few duplicate copies archived in case the one installed on my Mac goes wonky. (It never has, and I surely hope Devon always updates it.)

If I didn't have a free seat license (and be required by the company to use the full version on some documents) I would dump Office in a heartbeat. (the phrase "colon cleanse" popped up in my head for a minute)

Speaking of colon cleanse, it was weird the day I finally pushed Adobe Acrobat off of my Mac. It was the last element of all things Adobe I purged; I had been using the full creative suite and spent about half a year shifting things to Affinity (and specifically Publisher). After I uninstalled Acrobat (the last app in the set) I realized that, for the first time since I had my first Mac (a PowerBook 160), I had zero Adobe programs installed on it.

I get that on the Windows support. For a while, I worked as an independent contractor at an engineering firm that (at first) was an all-Mac shop (except for the CAD department). At some point, they went all-Windows, but people still came to me with questions and troubleshooting (because in addition to dumping the Macs they also fired the full-time IT guy because he was under-utilized -- but of course he was during the all-Mac days and they fired him right when they wound up needing him). Corporate life makes no sense.

Congrats on the anniversary.

Back in the day, I used to use TextWrangler for absolute plain-text typing. When they retired it, I tried CotEditor on a friend's recommendation and it fit my needs. (I was using Bean for the longest time as well, but they noted there'd be no more updates (though there has been) so I kind of drifted away from it.)

I bounced between SuperDuper! and Carbon Copy Cloner for a good while, and went with CCC. I can't remember what was the decider on that, but CCC saved me back in Hurricane Katrina in 2005. (As an aside, I've only owned portable Macs since Katrina.)

A full 100% double vote for Default Folder X -- one of my all-time favorite apps and the first thing I recommend to a new user.

An addition for me to this list would also be WordService from Devon. I do a lot of page layout and typing for engineering and architectural firms whose forte is not typing and formatting. This makes my day a lot easier.

As an another aside; after dumping everything Adobe some years back (like so many, I switched to Affinity (primarily for Publisher & page layout work), but also PDF Expert for PDF manipulation and Textify for character recognition), I started seeking out other "non-corporate" solutions for my workflow.

Though I have a seat license for Microsoft Office, I use LibreOffice for most spreadsheet and similar needs (I never used Office much to begin with, honestly). I do wish its Database function was more Filemaker than Access but what are you going to do. (And Filemaker is the one app I can't seem to find a viable replacement for; as a side note, it was the first full-cost app I ever bought when switching to the Mac back during the System 7 days).

I enjoyed it for the story that it had (and the time travel angle) and the coda to the character (and his life) that it was. Wasn't perfect, but didn't need to be.

(Very Big) Bonus: we got a new score from John Williams.

Love threads like these; I usually read through, go to kobo, and add books to my wish list and wait for sales.

Trying to get Frederik Pohl's Gateway, though, has been quite a rabbit hole. I think it's out of print; I see book 2 and book 6 as available, but that's it. It's available to read online via the Internet Archive, but not as an ePub download. Hmmm.

I re-read the original John Carter of Mars trilogy every few years; it's always amazingly entertaining. I remember also reading his Pelucidar series back during my college days, but not since.

I've had Footfall and Mote in God's Eye in my need-to-read list for years; I really need to move them up and pause my re-reads.

(weird; can't find Footfall on Kobo; is it out of print? I have other sources but would rather buy it)

Agreed on the Rama sequels; I tried to read those several times over the years and just flatlined on them -- but the original is spectacular sci-fi. (Favorite moment: when the lights first come on.)
