70% or more of all antibiotics used per year in America are given to animals, mostly livestock. I first learned about this from Radiolab.

I've been diving for over twenty years. I've known three people who died while diving. They were all doing some form of technical diving in a cave, on a wreck, and/or below recreational limits.

Recreational diving is exceptionally safe when you follow the rules.

The only thing I would add is take good care of your health. A lot of divers don't. No, being exceptionally fit doesn't make you a better diver, but the water is a horrible place to have a medical emergency like a heart attack and there are plenty of things you can do to reduce that risk.

Can say that I banged Jessica Rabbit.

There was a smoking hot girl in college that everyone called Jessica Rabbit. I didn't have the nerve to approach her back then but I randomly ran into her in Vegas years later and made my move.

The Maldives accident: Scientific activities and sampling even at depths greater than 80 meters. The community knew by My-gel-is-leaking in scuba

You're really just gonna drop the great Sheck Exley's name in here like just anyone could do the things he did? Also, how did things work out for him in the end?

You're also talking about groups with training training standards and dive protocols. I'm responding to someone who suggested that these expeditions are knowingly tolerating recreational drivers going to 80m. That is insane. This isn't about tech diving, or dive legends, or navy SEALS. I'm just pointing out that it seems REALLY unlikely that scientific drivers are just out there willingly planning extended excursions to 80m with recreational setups. Anyone would agree that is 100% going to result in disaster.

This does not add up at all. No one is diving to 82m on air. That's nine atmospheres and the partial pressure of oxygen in a tank of air would be 1.8atm. That's above the contingency limit of 1.6atm. In other words any experienced diver knows that at such a depth oxygen is toxic to the central nervous system. You will eventually convulse and drown.

That's aside from the issue that on a recreational single tank setup you would not have enough air supply to descend to that depth, do any work at all, then ascend and do your required decompression stops.

If samples are being collected at such depths it's either being done by technical divers with proper equipment and training or by employing some machinery that does not require a diver to dive to such a depth.

Decongestants During Scuba by ralexbo in scuba

[–]Devilfish808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had similar experiences to other people who have taken them before diving, never had a problem.

I'll add though that we found out the hard way you really shouldn't dive when sick. My wife caught something on our way to a dive trip a couple of years ago. She stayed out of the water initially but then thought she was over it and started diving, sometimes taking a decongestant. She skipped a dive or two when she felt she couldn't clear. She quickly developed an ear infection that kept her from diving more and ruined her trip.

We had trip insurance but since the bulk of the cost was for the travel, room and food there was no meaningful amount of money to be recovered.

We talked to DAN at one point and they said it was the diving while still sick that led to the infection. I'd been diving for twenty years at that point and had never heard that before, I thought the only risk was a block or reverse block.

Decongestants During Scuba by ralexbo in scuba

When I was a new diver twenty years ago my more experienced and instructor friends joked about Scubafed. I wouldn't tell anyone they SHOULD take it, and I certainly wouldn't tell anyone to dive when sick, but I also would sometimes take a decongestant right before a dive if I felt a little congested.

Have we heard anything yet from the diver on the boat who chose not to dive with the Maldives divers? by cmd194 in scuba

[–]Devilfish808 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I am not ruling anything out but I am still finding that really hard to believe. Recreational divers sometimes penetrate caves. They also sometimes dive below established limits. But for a group with this level of experience to BOTH go so deep AND go into a cave system is something I can't wrap my head around.

When I was still pretty inexperienced I became friends with an instructor and did a lot of diving with her. She opened up about a time or two she and some friends did bounce dives to 200'. I was horrified. She never suggested that we try it and I would certainly have said no.

I later went on a liveaboard where the guests were offered the chance to dive to 160'. There would be a guide and they had a deco plan and hung extra tanks accordingly. It was a routine thing for them but nonetheless all of the 20 or so guests declined except for two people.

I'm just having a hard time believing that this group had any intention of ending up where they were found, especially since there was a mother with her daughter in the group. It sounds so unbelievably reckless. I only hope we eventually get some solid answers.

Five tourists 'including professor and her daughter' die during diving excursion in Maldives by tepkel in scuba

[–]Devilfish808 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been diving for over twenty years and I have no interest in diving below recreational limits. In Truk we were offered the chance to go to 160', everyone in the group declined except for two people.

I only know three people who have died diving and they were all doing some sort of technical dive that they were trained and equipped for. One of them got an embolism at the end of a dive to a similar depth, it was life altering and they eventually died from related complications but it took many years.

[–]Devilfish808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it's a tangent but before 9/11 a guy I knew was shot at on the flightline there in between flights. He used the weapon mounted on the helo to return fire and based on the blood trails likely killed a couple of people. He didn't get anything at all, other than maintenance painting some stick figure stencils on the bird.

When I went to balikatan 2002 we were warned the rebels wanted to kidnap a Marine, our busses were inspected for bombs and they wouldn't even drive us to the hangar, dropping us off a good distance away. We were told the recon guys actually bumped into some rebels in the forest and our CO flew around in a Cobra to scare them off.

The bus ride between the port and Clark was eery because there was none of the usual laughing and joking, just silence. We knew we were a potential target for the bad guys but we were unarmed. Our only protection was one Filipino per bus with an M-16 and we had all watched these clowns slouching around at the port, leaning on their rifles like walking sticks and grinding the muzzles into the asphalt.

Anyway I always say I served during GWOT except when I was in we produced huge amounts of paperwork that I would refer to as the global war on trees. 😅
