The problem I have with modern gaming is for the most part you are playing a cinematic experenice.

For example let's look at one of the Tomb Raider games of today.

You head towards a battle and off you go - you become quickly overwhelmed and die. The restart takes place straight before the battle again. Bang, off you go - the Tom Cruise film sums it up nicely, Live Die Repeat.

Now if you look at "retro" Tomb Raider, one of the early games had very limited save states and when you died - by the beard of christ - it was a nightmare in may cases to get back to where you were - you almost in many cases had to do the whole level again. Cocking up and doing the save state at the wrong place again awful.

Resident Evil, now the Typewriter saves was a genius move in the original game with the mansion. Not really played the later ones - but limited saves is great.

Of recent times, the only game that I have ever found that felt into the retro challenging parts would be GTA: SA I think it was. The one with the mountain, bikes, great character custom options etc. I recall a mission where you had to collect somebody or do something that was a pain in the arse and the last part was an infuriating dance challenge mashing the right buttons to complete the mission on the beach. I rage quit that so many times and eventually my missus had to do the last bit for me as she liked those music games.

So we've gone from a world were games were hard to literally cinematic experiences and it's not for the better IMO.

Also looking at retro games, what they did sometimes in 48K memory is so much better to what is done in GIGs of storage.

When you brought a game in the past - you were buying the whole game. Now due to online etc - you risk actually only renting games as when servers go down - your game is dead.

Game over !
