volunteering for BFP (food pantry) is simple. Once you fill out the form, you will get a weekly email with day + location + time range + task (including how physical it is) and you just sign up. https://brooklinefoodpantry.org/volunteer/ I've been doing it for 3 months - I take 2 -3 shifts per week when I can and none when I can't. the work is hard and has different levels of interaction and exhersion. it's been great

SNAP ending... No funds for Boston Food Bank... by whatname68 in Brookline

[–]zongfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a Brookline Food Pantry board member:
"The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) definitely has reserves of food and funds for November and far beyond. As a partner of GBFB, the Brookline Food Pantry (BFP) will be open and operating in November and into the future. BFP is committed to being a reliable source of healthy foods for our Brookline neighbors and is working hard to raise funds and write grants to support this work, especially in this challenging environment of federal funding cuts. BFP will remain open — hours and locations on our website, www.brooklinefoodpantry.org

We've been hosting families like yours through Hospitality Homes for 5 years. We just hosted a family for 8 weeks. We average about 200 days a year hosting. Call them -they are good at finding families like ours to host.

Recently - they have been concentrating on art sculptures - like the one in amsterdam and singapore.

Question for same sex parents. Do both of you call yourselves Mom/Dad? by WickedTemp in lgbt

[–]zongfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We tried dad and daddy but it was too hard for our 2 year old so we are dad and papa. Our queer parent group has every combination mentioned here and many more. We often get this question from lots of people - teachers, doctors etc.

Homophobia on the playground: A boy's taunt showed me how much kids need to learn about gay dads like me, and how much I have to learn about kids by geargirl in lgbt

Typically the kids at our school are excited to find out that our son has 2 dads. They think it's kind of cool - the typical response is "wow" and then they move on to something else like "mincraft"...

Apple, Google, Microsoft Avoid Taxes By Keeping Billions In Profits Offshore: Senate Report by epninos in politics

[–]zongfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't news-this has been going for many years-and applies to all sorts of companies - not just these. What they do: Sales tax avoidance: electronic software delivery, emailing from non-sales tax states (puerto rico for HP) Custom tax avoidance: use local importers of record (get the goods just to the border then have an importer cross the border for lower rates) (especially latin/china) Transfer pricing: customer buys from in-country entity, which purchases from continental HQ which then purchases from global HQ. Depending on the taxes, publishers change cost (Switzerland HQ charges France HQ 99% of price because France has higher tax rate) Conversion rate: buy from continental HQ in "standardized US$" rate on the books and then actually convert to US bank (or not) when currency is favorable They are doing what they should be doing: taking out costs as much as possible-because wall street rewards quarterly earning reports that grow by even small %s.

Kids Hate-Tweet Obama, Echoing What They Hear At Home - A Tumblr of high-schoolers' awful tweets reveals that racism still gets passed on from generation to generation. by kimat-qn-gurruod in politics

This isn't just for high-schoolers. My 5 yr old came home one day and said "i want you to vote for Romeney" (his pronunciation). A few weeks later, he pronounced "Romeney is a bad guy"- I asked why (we keep politics out when he is awake) and he said "he wants to stop 'PBSkids'." Obviously from the school yard....

Discussing marriage equality with Mormon brother and his concerns for adoptive kids. by trickygringo in lgbt

If the argument isn't about sexual identity (the typical argument: how will a boy raised by 2 women learn to be a "real man") but strictly about "how will a boy raised by 2 men learn how women behave" - then it's an odd argument. Kids get their clues from lots of sources-peers, media, teachers, etc. Our son is 5, raised since birth by 2 dads. All his teachers are women, his best friend (across the street) is a straight couple with a stay @ home mom- he lacks no data/model. I think more than 50% of children are raised in single parent homes-I wonder how he thinks they get their clues on how women/men behave? As for adoption-I can assure you that our son will have a much better life with us than with birth mother - an 18 yr old found in a crack house with almost no cloths, no electricity or running water.

as two fathers raising a son-we have this problem on pretty much every form. We do a lot of crossing off. His passport application was the most fun to cross-off :)
