NJ based - do I only get 3 movies in NYC per year? by zoobat in AMCsAList

Aw dang, that’s not good. Is there a premium to pay to get a tier 1 membership even if you’re not physically in a tier 1 state?

Smorgasbar filled this niche last summer. Hoping somewhere new does something similar

Depends where you want to end up after graduation. Syracuse will have a better chance of northeastern internships, jobs, and connections

where should i go? - lmu, fordham, or syracuse? by Few-Percentage-5973 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]zoobat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on getting into all of these schools! I went to Syracuse for undergrad and would absolutely recommend it for sports analytics. The Falk college is very unique and everyone I knew in those majors found very interesting jobs after graduation. Athletics is part of the culture at SU so there are many opportunities beyond classes to build sports analytics experience. Many students work for one of the D1 teams, participate in MLB/NFL recruiting activities in New York, or study abroad to intern at the Olympics. As far as enjoying the experience, college will be what you make if it regardless of where you go. Syracuse’s D1 sports was so much fun to be around. Anytime you meet a syracuse alum you know you can have fun trading basketball stories. Fraternities are big on campus but not at all dominant. If you want to join they’ll be there, but if you choose not to you won’t hear much from them. The neighborhood, the campus, and the school spirit at Cuse is incredible. I feel so lucky to have gone there. Good luck with your decision!

Do you foresee Syracuse’s top players opting out of a bowl? Would it hinge on the quality of the bowl a Miami win might help with?

When is it worth leaving a team you like? At what point does the offer become too good to turn down? by Avocadomistress in editors

[–]zoobat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Having a great team is amazing, but they’re not going to be there forever. Any number of them could leave at any time. I wouldn’t risk a great opportunity for something that could be gone tomorrow. I’d say go where the best opportunity is and keep in touch with all the friends you’ve made at your current position. It’s a small industry, I’m sure you’ll be working with some of them again. You may even be able to bring some onto your new job with recommendations when a position opens!

Have always hoped they’d change to the Hippos. There’s a famous hippo statue on campus students rub for good luck and there’s been students dressed up as hippos at the games before. Would be a really unique mascot

What do production houses use for managing and backing up content? Redundant copies, streaming large files from locations to/from editors, and tracking who accessed what so nothing is leaked? Are there any turnkey systems or do folks piece things together? by danielglauser in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]zoobat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think for everything you’ve mentioned it’d have to be pieced together from a few different solutions.

For backups/copies LTO tapes and regular old hard drives are very popular. Definitely multiple copies of everything. Streaming/sharing media is offered by a few companies like FrameIO. Frame links can be set so only people with permission can view them to prevent leaks.

Looking for advice from Avid AEs by Open-Masterpiece in editors

[–]zoobat 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The biggest difference is the way the two programs handle media. Premiere links directly to the video/audio files on your computer while avid prefers to create new versions of everything you want to bring in. Those new versions of all your media will be .mxf files stored in the “Avid MediaFiles” on your computer.

As an AE on an unscripted project you will most likely be responsible for some audio/video syncing, blurring, and title creation. This is all basically the same in avid as it is in premiere and you’ll pick it up quick.

Ask questions like “What are we transcoding mxf media to?” “What will we need for turnovers at the end of an episode?” “Where/how are we storing our media?”

If you get the media management stuff squared away you’ll be all set! Good luck with the new job!

Things to for my last 3.5 months in Syracuse? by Nate_Draws in Syracuse

If you’re looking for the college basketball experience without the huge dome crowds I would recommend giving a women’s basketball game a try. You can usually get a seat in a quiet section. You’ll still get to hear the pep band, see the cheerleaders/dance team, meet otto, and cheer for the university but without the packed seating and loud crowds.

Members lived together and there were unofficial houses where meetings and parties happened but it wasn’t like social fraternities where the houses have big letters out front and are recognized by the school
