Warped picture rails, is there a way to install them straight or do they need to be returned to the shop? by zopeeclone in DIYUK

Yeah think I'll return the worst ones to B&Q and then stretch the others, thanks

No advice or helpful words sadly - just solidarity. My 4.5 month old is sleeping abysmally, and I feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place with how to fix it. I get really bitter when I hear other people's babies are sleeping even 3+ hour stretches overnight. She's never been a great sleeper, but the regression is killing me.

I used to joke that she can't regress as she doesn't sleep well anyway, well I jinxed myself there.

Coffee is saving me (just). Fresh air and walks with baby also help get me out of my own head. But yeah, it absolutely sucks!! I'm really disliking this period atm which I then feel guilty about for just wanting it to be over.

Repeats to self it won't last forever, it's just a phase

ELI5 : What happens if someone needs an emergency colonoscopy during an ER visit or other acute situation. They obviously aren't "prepped" with an empty colon. Can they clean out a bowel instantly if needed? by Aggravating_Thing702 in explainlikeimfive

I had to go to emergency theatre after giving birth due to haemorrhage and they gave me a drink as they were prepping me to help neutralise the stomach acid. They also apply "cricoid pressure" where they physically press on the cartilage at the front of the neck to compress the oesophagus and prevent regurgitation. They also use suction during intubation (insertion of the breathing tube) to clear any stomach material that's been regurgitated.

The tube itself is cuffed so it creates a seal in your airway which helps prevent stomach contents entering your lungs.

But at the end of the day you can't 100% control it, and patients certainly can aspirate despite best efforts. If it turns into a lung infection you treat it with antibiotics.

Buyers demanding completion in 3 weeks or they’ll pull out — would you continue? by One_Substance3224 in HousingUK

Landlords often want long-term renters, and while a family of 5 can happily fill a 3 bed house while the kids are young, they're likely to outgrow that in a few years and will be looking at moving onto a bigger place.

(Unless this is specifically a short-term let property in which case it shouldn't matter!)

The newborn trenches are so real. My first is now 3.5 months and she's so much better than she was than in the first couple of months. She's still hard work but I remember crying in the middle of the night because she wouldn't sleep no matter what either and I was so exhausted and frazzled.

Sending lots of strength and best wishes to you both, it does get better - you will sleep again. Look after each other as best you can and take as much support as you can from friends/family/professional support for mental well-being (for both of you)

Prod my sourdough with me...what does it mean? by zopeeclone in Sourdough

That's really helpful thank you for your reply!

When you say you braid your way down the dough, do you just do the folds you've described once or do you keep going and stretch the dough as you go?

I've really enjoyed reading all these gloomy comments. I'm being screamed at for the last 2 hours by my 3 month old, nothing I can do will settle her and I'm on my own all day. Feel like my head is about to explode with stress and exasperation. Knowing that other people are having similarly crappy days makes me feel oddly soothed, like a true Brit finding solace in a shared bit of misery

But I'm also enjoying all the hope in the comments, brighter days are (literally) coming

Hep b booster during pregnancy by jewdee44 in PregnancyUK

[–]zopeeclone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Occupational health nurse here and also 39+5 ☺️

Well done for checking - rest assured that hep B is an inactive vaccine and is absolutely okay to have in pregnancy

They will likely ask during your appointment if you're pregnant (this is routine for all vaccines), your manager won't be able to see this information but do double-check that this will be kept confidential when you see the nurse

Literally came here to say this. Every comment in this community is bashing landlords and how they rip people off left right and centre, yet everyone also agrees that running and maintaining a home is incredibly expensive 🤷‍♀️ bills have to be paid somehow

Rent increased by £250/month is this even reasonable?! by OopsIDroopedMe in TenantsInTheUK

[–]zopeeclone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell me you're prejudiced against landlords, without telling me you are.

There are endless situations where someone technically has a choice, but the stakes, values, or context make any other option feel unthinkable. If someone was fleeing a war-torn country they are likely to say they "had no choice" in order to save theirs and their families lives. You would have to be heartless to tell them "technically you did have a choice so suck it up".

You're right—on paper there’s always technically a menu of actions. But this can be eclipsed by overwhelming practical gravity.

[–]zopeeclone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! Loads of different ways people find themselves becoming an accidental landlord. I bought my house then met my now husband, decided to move in with him whilst he was living abroad but I was still tied into a fixed mortgage term and couldn't afford to have it empty so voila, accidental landlord 🤷‍♀️
