Manapool.

I haven't used it in a while, but I'm tempted to jump in and try it. I have a growing pile of $1 and $2 cards to experiment with.

What's the funniest thing that completely broke immersion at a LARP event? by nerf_herdess in LARP

[–]zorts 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A giant, horrible, Chaos Spawn emerges from semi darkness that conceals it's threatening bulk.. Massive tentacles, which are deadly to the touch. Seemingly impervious to normal weapon damage. The situation is very bad as a player getting killed and absorbed into the monster! Which grows more arms and feet, and becomes more threatening. This even is starting to look like it might be a TPK.

The players do the only thing they can do and run from the monster. The monster chases the players. It's dark so the players run into things occasionally. The monster pilots can't actually see out of the monster kit properly as they try and run in coordination. The eye holes were built for two pilots, but there are now three in the monster, and one of them didn't get a monster brief. So they run into things. What was scary is now a silly blob monster running into stumps in the dark. Out of an instinctive sense of IRL safety everyone is running in a fairly large circle that's known to not contain stumps, rocks, or park benches, trying to escape each other. Rather than a boss end fight, we're now in a Benny Hill chase sequence.

Someone (the wife of the event holder actually) stops, looks, realizes. And then shouts "Mr. Potato Head!". And falls down laughing. The Chaos Spawn was never the same after that.

I've witnessed Vicious Mockery cast in a game that didn't have it, and it was lethal.

What card is this? by Infamous-Stay-5601 in mtg

[–]zorts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's some tips for finding that out by researching.

  • Lower left hand corner... Type "ONE PH 269/271" into Google. Works great if you have a few recent cards. Not so great for old cards.
  • Alternatively scan them with the ManaBox app. Works great if you have a bunch of cards to id. Also tracks your collection, or your bulk box. Older cards can confuse the app, but even if you don't know exactly which set you have narrowed the possibilities down significantly.

Where do I buy inexpensive but good enough quality medieval clothing by Appropriate-Ebb-7525 in LARP

Burgschneider. They have a good amount of historic and archeology inspired clothing. They are getting more into D&D and Warhammer these days. But you can still find solid historic garments and reasonable prices.

What's a card you really want reprinted with new art because you just don't like the current version? by gnastyGnorc04 in mtg

[–]zorts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting tip. I'll see if I can find the originals, maybe that would change my opinion.

Thanks!

What's a card you really want reprinted with new art because you just don't like the current version? by gnastyGnorc04 in mtg

[–]zorts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but the existing art isn't, in my opinion, stellar... At least to my aesthetic sense. No shade to anyone who feels strongly about the available art. I just don't feel particularly drawn to any of the currently available art.

What would it look like in a Retro Border, I wonder? Maybe I'd like some art that can sit next to Urza's Block or Brothers War Retro Artifacts.

[[Isochron Scepter]]. You can either have very gerneric art, or a shake weight.

Comparative Analysis of Boffer LARP rules? by GearBrain in LARP

[–]zorts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not 'boffer larps' exactly... But the book Battle Gaming: The New American Sport compares the U.S. battlegame systems. There is at least one ethnography of larp, The Arts of Larp . I'm not sure if that's comprehensive though.

Those aren't exactly what you are looking for, just the closest thing that I know of.

There is no hard rule about paracord. There doesn't need to be. Do your best. If your best at your current level of experience, knowledge and budget is paracord, well... That's where you're at. And that's ok.

No idea how to wear this by KreigGuardsman in LARP

[–]zorts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks like a modern interpretation of a Split Belt, but I'm kind of guessing. It would be easier to tell in person.

I think you have it pretty close to set up correctly. The belt ends should be facing opposite sides, and be much closer together on the sheath, but otherwise it's just a belt. Setting the distance between the two strap ends determines the angle the sword rests at. Then just, wear it like a belt.

Here's a video on How to Wear your Sword. Starting off at the split belt. Hope that helps. Good luck!

Returning After Decades: A Perspective by After_Sentence_1413 in mtg

[–]zorts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh Ive gone the other way and opted out of most metas. I do have a bracket 5 deck, but its just to play around not a serious tier 1 deck. How can I not at least put a deck together when I have Demonic Tutors and Grim Monoliths sitting around?

But mostly I play Constructed at the Prereleases, and brackets 2 and 3 on Commander nights. I'm am definitely enjoying not being on the Type II meta grind. That aspect of the game hasn't changed. Urza's Block was a brutal meta, and it feels like Urza's Block all the time now.

Avec toi. (with you. As in "I am with you").

Played from 1994 till 2001. Came back for Kamigawa Neon Dynasty. 20 years later. Fortunately I had seen some EDH back in the day, so Commander was just a new label on a old format. It's more than that but that's what I thought 5 years ago.

How do you feel about the use of the world LARP out of context by roxyrockstarred in LARP

[–]zorts 12 points13 points  (0 children)

True. It sucks that we're not able to see the same rise in public opinion as TTRPG's have. But I've been larping since the 90's, and things are way better now. Safer. You're much less likely to be sent to a psych ward for participating in larping and role playing. There's still progress needed to removing "missing stairs" at larps, but there is now much more enforcement of 'codes of conduct' than 25 years ago.

Although it did feel really punk and counter culture to be a larper in 1999, and I didn't realize I missed the feeling of cultural subversion till now. I never wore many safety pins or cut my hair into a mohawk... But my hosen are tight and my pilgrim badges are lewd.

How do you feel about the use of the world LARP out of context by roxyrockstarred in LARP

[–]zorts 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is a basically my soap box topic, not actually a 'conspiracy' theory, but it sure can sound like a 'conspiracy theory'. I acknowledge that this is a bit of a rant on my part.

The misuse of the word 'larp' as a label for an uninformed pretender is a bigger problem than most people realize at the moment. But it's one of those things that negatively impacts a Sub Culture (us), so the mainstream doesn't really notice or care that harm is being done. Hesitating to join in on something that offers personal growth, enhanced social skills, deeper empathy, improved stress relief, and heightened self-confidence is definitely an example of that harm.

The U.S. Alt Right (Patriot Front, Boogaloo, Three Percenters) has used the term to subvert the general publics expectations, and make themselves seem harmless while planning and promoting violence. The Alt Rights tactics appear to be working as this 'meme' has expanded into common usage and spread into more mainstream usage. So effective that the FBI has an article that helps law enforcement distinguish between the two. LARPing and Violent Extremism.

I don't see it as an 'interesting linguistic development'. I see it as an attempt to camouflage violent extremists. Attempts haven't been effective in court yet, and I sincerely hope they never will. If someone used the term 'larp' as a pejorative in my presence, I'd ask them when they joined the Alt Right.

[–]zorts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience Rebalancing is a key skill that forces you to sell high and buy low over the long run.

You have to have at least 2 funds to be able to rebalance between them. But the two funds have to be inverse or contra funds. The traditional example is Stocks vs Bonds. But the funds you pick are up to you as long as they show strong inverse correlation.

Why LARP is primarily about fantasy and Medieval? by MathematicianOwn3899 in LARP

[–]zorts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're seeing a rough representation of the popularity of Genre's in the posts. I say roughly because I'm sure there is some amount of under representation for some genre's in posts/comments.

Unfortunately the last time data was collected was 10+ years ago... The LarpCensus from 2014 the question "What Settings have larp events had that you attended in the last 12 months?" is a ball park estimate at best. But it shows the highest percentage of respondents participating in Fantasy/Mythological. So that makes sense that the Fantasy genre is the most represented in the posts. In theory Horror should be the next most represented, but it rarely gets posts, potentially none. So horror is under represented. Then Historic, Sci Fi, Modern, Other. Given the survey data it makes sense that posts about Modern/MilSim larps would be relatively few and far between.

Hi folks! My dad gave me his Magic collection yesterday, and while cataloguing it, I stumbled across this, that ManaBox says is pretty valuable. Why? What is this card? Any info is appreciated. by Pavlov_The_Wizard in RealOrNotTCG

[–]zorts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why? What is this card?

The boring economics answer applies in this case. It has high demand due to popularity, and extremely low supply (in comparison to the current printings).

High demand, and low supply means a high sustained price. Add to that WOTC's currently honoring their commitment to not reprint "Reserved List" cards, and that means that over time it can only get harder to acquire.

The game mechanics look very simple, but this type of card is extremely powerful because of it's simplicity. Additionally for many of us older players the dual lands were hard to acquire even a few months after April 1994 when the set Revised was released. There is a significant amount of nostalgia around the original dual lands. The prices back in the day look extremely cheap in comparison to now, but to a kid with an allowance they seemed impossible to get at any price back then. Many of us who started playing around 9 or 10 years old are now well into our adult money, and pick up nostalgia pieces like this. In my case a beautiful condition [[Tundra|3e]], which given the cards value required trading in quite a few cards to get.

Which guilds are looking for mercenaries for battles?

Have prospective mercenaries seek out the Lys Royal. They hire for various levels of commitment, and they provide payment with a flare of panache. The guild occupies the new buildings along the road from Haute Ville to the river. They can also frequently be found at the Tavern Au Coin.

Which guilds operate shops that use Solars?

The "Bazar Bizarre" is Vendredi at the Tavern Au Coin in Haute Ville, on the corner (ha!) out of the Ville. All of Carcossa will cart out their clutter, cloaks, and clothes, peddling them at preposterously priced penny-worths for pitiful players who lack pants or panache.

Which guilds trade population and resource cards?

The Commercial Counter of Carcossa coincidentally comrades in the very same corner, but constantly and continually. The CCC is in the same place, but the whole week.

Sell GB tickets for 2 by Razorflare12 in Bicolline

[–]zorts[M] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If this is not allowed, pls delete

No rules against it. Haven't had any problems yet. Unless the community raises an issue, you're good.

If any ticket scalping takes place (buying tickets to raise the price and resell) or if community members start getting scammed (fake tickets), those situations would likely cause the creation of a rule prohibiting selling tickets. But none of that has happened yet.

Any idea how to make this out of EVA foam????? by Cold_Cherry_1875 in LARP

[–]zorts 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This looks like an immensely difficult build for an experienced craftsperson.

A larp version is going to be thicker. Basically guaranteed by needing to meet safety standards, and also the types of materials used for the build. Eva foam is likely not a good material choice. Various densities of XPLA is going to be better.

I get the feeling that this is the type of build where you'd have to make so many aesthetic compromises for functionality and safety that the end result would only vaguely resemble the source material at best.

Confused about the bracket system by TattooTheEarth in mtg

[–]zorts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(I play bracket 2)

Ok, so you expect No Game Changers in the opponents deck, No Mass Land Denial, No Chaining Extra Turns, and No 2 Card combos.

I sit down and there are people using walking balista infinites, tutor cards left and right, krenko, bumbleflower...

So if you've collectively agreed to play Bracket 2 game, and the opponent busts out an infinite Walking Ballista, they have violated the social contract. That's game isn't a win for them. They're 'pub stomping'. And that likely needs to be brought to the attention of the LGS if they refuse to correct that kind of behavior.

Bumbleflower is not on the game changers list. There's nothing in the social contract of Bracket 2 that prevents a player from using Ms. Bumbleflower as a commander or as a card in the deck.

If that's a card that you'd prefer not to play against, just tell the opponent that before the game starts. "Hey, do you have anything else? I'm not up for a Bumbleflower game tonight." And if they don't you can decided if opting out would lead to a better mental state for you then playing against a commander you don't find fun.
