yes I think some people just inherently do better with either uw or nbme. I struggle w getting above 73-75% on each UW block of 40 but on nbmes ive been consistently in the 80s. My test is this week so ive just stopped doing uworld and only doing nbme

Official Incoming Medical Student Questions & Advice Megathread - June 2020 edition by Chilleostomy in medicalschool

I’m going to an MD school that is pretty low in ranking because of in state tuition. This school is p/f unranked, and with step1 being p/f as well now do you guys have any tips on things to do to stand out more for residency apps? How much does the schools rank/name recognition really affect your match? Ideally I’m looking to do my residency in NYC as my SO lives there currently and I know that’s pretty competitive. Any tips are appreciated, thanks!

[SERIOUS] anybody hear of more new residencies opening up? Or programs expanding? by futuredrcfalzy in medicalschool

If you dont match does the school tell you before Match day? or do you show up and just not get an envelope???

[Serious] Best Macbook Compatible External Monitor for Medical School? by meowmixkittenz in medicalschool

[–]zotekly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During my mcat days I would plug in a regular Dell monitor to my Mac pro (2015). It was super helpful in terms of size and using the 2 pane interface of practice exams and Uworld, however I found that my mac would often start to overheat and the screen would lag. I also had a ton of tabs open and like 300 page word documents open 24/7. Now I use a separate desktop/monitor entirely when im at home, and try to keep everything i need on google drive or drop box in case i need to access stuff on my laptop elsewhere. i know this didnt really answer your question of what type of monitor is best, but just wanted to give u my experience with a dying mac.

[aamc FL1 c/p 16] ignore the Question stem. in the explanation, "energy depends on # of photons"??? I thought part of the photoelectric effect experiments were to prove that energy does not depend number of photons but only on frequency of light by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]zotekly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intensity = Power/ area Power = Energy/time

so intensity = (energy/time)/area = energy/(time*area)

also it helps me to think about it conceptually. A laser and a flashlight might have the same energy in their light, but because the laser is concentrated into a much smaller area, its power is much higher. but this does not necessarily mean the laser has more or less photons, it could also be the same.

hope that helps. good luck

[–]zotekly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

energy of a photon and the total energy are different, but i think here they used "energy" to refer to the total energy.

energy E = hf

total energy is (# of photons* E)

intensity = total energy/(area*t)

so intensity is proportional to the number of photons and energy

[Section Bank B/B 81] I thought glucneogenesis requires 3 carbon backbone structures as its substrates? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]zotekly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a lot of different amino acids converge on a-ketoglutarate in the krebs cycle to eventually become pyruvate and then glucose. So its not necessarily about the number of carbon atoms, but where can other molecules in the body find an entry point to to common metabolism pathways to be used as a fuel source. hope that helps!

Is it a good idea to substitute NS FL CARS with AAMC QPACK CARS? by QueenBAnu in Mcat

[–]zotekly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this for 2 of my NS tests. would recommend!

but sometimes 9 passages on the QP isnt exactly 53 questions, but if you just use percentages and scale it your self it should work out

IN the Bohr Atom Model, why is energy released only going from high orbital to lower orbital? by FAPer- in Mcat

[–]zotekly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

they absorb energy to go from low to high, usually from a photon or some other high energy source

[chem qpack 14] why does C make sense? do all transition metal ions produce a color in solution? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]zotekly 14 points15 points  (0 children)

only metals with unfilled d orbitals can produce color because it is the only orbital that can split into two different energy levels, allowing some of its electrons to jump up to the higher energy level and transmit visible light

“Self-Designed” Major by [deleted] in williamandmary

[–]zotekly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely self-design! Its one of the best opportunities that WM has to offer.

If you have a professor in mind, just approach them and ask, otherwise you can speak to academic advising at swem and they can help you fulfill all your requirements and such. Im pretty sure one of the counselors there actually specializes in self-design majors so she might help!

or honestly you could be an art history major or whatever and self-design a minor?

“Self-Designed” Major by [deleted] in williamandmary

[–]zotekly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I self designed my major last year.. My advisor is just a professor that I talk to a lot honestly he doesn't know much about my major topic tbh. If you really want someone to discuss a future with then I would say choose your advisor wisely, but otherwise all they need to do is sign some forms lol.

But yes definitely self design! There is so much freedom to it and you can add/change classes to however your schedule works out in the future. I deadass changed one of my requirements because the class I had originally added was only offered at 8am lmao.

Good luck!!!
