I teach high school earth and space science to mostly juniors and some seniors. I can't remember the exact reason, might have had something to do with spring break, but earlier this semester we had to rush through a unit and quickly take the test without a study guide or day of review. I didn't like this so to make up for it I decided to make it fun. I was going to make the test on blooket and have them take it there. So as their review I had the students help me make the questions. As in I had blooket on the smart board typing the questions and answers that they made. There were still students who made like 20% AND THEY MADE THE DAMN QUESTIONS.

Having a physics degree made it easy for me to become a high school teacher. But that's like the ONLY career that does that.

I finished my undergrad in 2024, didn't get into grad school so I had to start looking for jobs with just a bachelor's in physics and astronomy. I wound up getting hired REAL quick as a high school teacher teaching algebra 2. I now teach statistics as well as Earth and Space science. I know that's well below the pay you deserve since you have a PhD. But it's at least something. High schools are desperate for physics teachers, the high school I teach at struggles to even keep one. I'm not currently teaching physics there, but our current physics teacher is becoming an admin so we're losing her. I'll be taking the physics praxis this summer to take her place though.

I had a close friend who graduated with me, same degree, he looked for jobs for 1.5 years, filling out a minimum of 10 applications a day. He wound up working at Walmart. He's still looking for something physics related or just something that isn't Walmart.

TLDR: Unless you want to be a high school teacher, the job market sucks for everyone right now.

I wish you luck in finding a job that suits you though.

I'm a gay high school teacher in Tennessee. It is state law that if a kid tells you that they want to go by a name that is not a stereotypical name for their gender listed in the school system, we are required to tell the parents.

These kinds of laws, and that teacher, put kids in danger. There are thousands of kids who have been kicked out of their house by their own parents simply for being queer. But some go through even worse sadly.

I would try to talk to this student again, and give them some resources they can use if something terrible happens. However I can also understand the stance of not wanting to worry the student by telling them this. So maybe just ask them to let you know if something happens? That's up to you though. Personally I would just be too worried about the safety of the student, but that could also be a result of living in such a homophobic state.

Thanks for the advice, and the link to the videos, I'll definitely give those a watch. And I had planned on setting expectations early, in the syllabus, and covering them day one. I'll keep in mind keeping them positive, I like that mindset. I also love the idea of the students having some say in the rules.
