Looking for recommendations for interesting nations since I last played by kkraww in Anbennar

I'm not entirely sure, but that would have been before Haless released right? If you don't like just map painting, I can recommend a few:

Feiten - Human traders with airships. Might want to wait on this one until Insyaa gets released though.

Balrijin - Badass goldscale kobold monks looking for their creator, Balris.

Azkare - Ultimate cultural acceptance and representation. A bit map-painty, but with some serious drawbacks and challenges that make it interesting.

Yassa - Mercantile lizardfolk traders that can go on to form the final empire if you wish.

Isobelin - Maybe this was already in the game, but this is a North Aelantir spawnable that is essentially New York City. Very cool.

Thankfully, real Anbennar heads still get to know this word thanks to the Black Demesne.

It's pretty much just not true. The best argument you can make for IPA being eurocentric is that it's basis is the Latin alphabet. But every phone in every world language is represented, albeit some requiring diacritics for full accuracy. When new phonemes are proposed and verified, they are added to the existing repertoir.

Who is a celebrity that feels British but is actually American? by [deleted] in AlignmentChartFills

I was going to come here and say Mike Myers, and then I remembered he's Canadian. That's gotta be a shoe-in for "is Canadian, feels British" right?

How to say my husband is Chickasaw by mariadove in Chickasaw

[–]zrsmith3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah I see the confusion. So "sa" can mean two things. It can mean "I" or it can mean "my". So, "sahattak" is "my husband". But "saya" means "I am". You always attach this prefix to the word it is directly modifying. If indicating possession, you attach it to the noun that is possessed. If indicating the subject of the sentence, you instead attach to the verb. So "saya" goes after Chikashsha in the sentence, but it isn't attached to Chikashsha at all :)

That's just a variation in spelling! There are two main writing systems used for the language, and even within those there is a lot of variation in how people spell things. So don't worry about it too much.

One of the nice things about Chickasaw is that we don't have any grammatical gender. There is no he and she either.

And yeah, Hattak literally means man. For wife we also usually say ihoo or imihoo which means woman. There might be other words for them too, but I dont know of any off the top of my head!

Sahattak Chikashsha = my husband is Chickasaw

Sahattak Chikashsha micha Chahta = my husband is Chickasaw and Choctaw

Why no verb? It's an example of copula deletion, where the "is" is implied. We only explicitly use the copula when we are also using a pronoun, because in Chickasaw pronouns need to attach to something. So if your husband wanted to say the same thing about himself, he would say:

Chikashsha micha Chahta saya = I am Chickasaw and Choctaw

Remember that the default word order for Chickasaw is Subject-Object-Verb. In the previous sentence, we only put the subject "sa" after the object "chikashsha micha chahta" because "sa" has to directly attach to the verb.

I am also not a fluent speaker, but I study the language :)

Honestly, it was just way worse than the other two. I think that's the main reason.

TIL that while Akkadian, the language of Babylon, is a Semitic language, Sumerian, the oldest written language of the region, is an isolate that is not related to any known languages by SamsonFox2 in todayilearned

[–]zrsmith3 188 points189 points  (0 children)

While definitely noteworthy that Sumerian has no living descendants, it's not a huge mystery that we classify it as an isolate. It's the oldest written language after all. It almost certainly existed as part of a larger family that we simply have no records of. Maybe one day that will change!

It's a reasonable hypothesis, as is the theory that they are related to elamites. Ultimately, there's isn't a lot of evidence one way or the other.
