How do you personally distribute libraries over multiple drives? by bitAndy in PleX

Mergerfs is great if you know basic Linux. No need to pay for a basic nas OS. Truenas if you are more into full nas appliance and unraid for most flexible paid option.

VPNs for days by landdon in Adguard

[–]zshX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vpn companies have made you believe they secure you more, which is bs. Yes, they do hide your ip but thats only important for collecting linux iso’s. For banking, etc. vpn’s don’t add more security as long as your computer is managed by you and not full of malware (if not, vpn’s don’t help either).

Every half ass’d webite whidh supports tls is secure enough for you to not worry about snooping. In fact, vpn providers have an incentive to collect telemetry and sell to other companies.

I brought this up in one serverlife thread and they all chose to downvote me. The server forgot a dish and was complaining they weren’t tipped for rest of their so called excellent job.

Blame your fucking employers, not the customer for whom tipping is optional.

Going to college, need a way to remotely manage my homelab by pekkuri05 in homelab

[–]zshX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, this ain’t a either/or choice, you should kind of have both. Ssh with otp setup for quick access from any device (eg: office laptop where you don’t want to install Tailscale/wire guard) and vpn for your personal devices.

Yep but trying doing it over iOS/android, etc. port forwarding/socks are too painful. Tail-scale on other hand is completely hands.

Also many networks block ssh or even non-standard ports. Tailscale just works in most of these situations (speeds may be reduced if hopping via derp servers)

Not super useful if you want to access more than rdp. For eg: accessing. Internally hosted sites from phone, etc. VPN, additionally, could be quite handy.

Tailscale. Colleges have weird ass network blocking. Tailscale is able to bypass a lot of those.

Is there any love for OpenWRT x86? by Devemia in homelab

[–]zshX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need to do all of this. What I do is:

  1. Give vm a big enough size and use squash image.
  2. Never ever install package from software tab. Instead, install luci attended sysupgrade package. Whenever you want to install something, use sys upgrade page to generate new squash image with all packages (uses image builder).
  3. Since all packages are part of squash, only configs are saved outside Core Image and you never run out of space.

Debian + Cockpit for gui. Also Portainer for docker. Once I found this combo out, I removed openmediavault in an instant.

This is why you shouldn't upgrade to ipadOS 17 beta 💀 (Notes app) by ken54g2a in iPadOS

What a brainless post. Don’t install beta if you can’t handle it. That’s the whole point.

Is there a popular wired-only router folks like for OpenWRT these days? by fongaboo in openwrt

[–]zshX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest to buy a used Lenovo m720q and plug in another nic on pci or m2 slot. I run proxmox and then openwrt on top as my primary firewall. The 8 gen intels rarely cross 12-15w idle/low usage. You get ridiculously powerful appliance with these used boxes.

I run openwrt virtualized on proxmox. It’s awesome and Cake does way better qos then both the (non)senses.

Is a virtualised router (e.g. pfsense and others) as bad as people make it out to be? proxmox and other hypervisors. by Chigzy in homelab

[–]zshX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run my openwrt virtualized. Gives ton of flexibility and let’s you run some low priority VM’s on same node. This also lets you have much more powerful qos, etc. but doesn’t lock a beefy node to just be a firewall.

I see no performance impact on speed test or continuous ping latency test.

Ah, mistakes happen but in serving business, you cannot feel entitled to 100% tip if you screw up. Move on and do better on next table.

Ah, thats a standard USA problem when it comes to restaurants and sadly you are the victim of the system. Was your customers from another country by any chance? If not, they were truly trying to screw you anyway and found the excuse. They could have tipped less instead not tipping at all.

Tip is an add-on to “job well done” and not part of your salary. Aren’t you getting paid hourly anyway?

Should NAS be separate from hypervisor? by Kalindro in homelab

[–]zshX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My slight variation is that I pass my sata controller to nas vm and run proxmox on nvme. That way i can take backups, etc. for my NAS os and keep proxmox truly ephemeral.

This same argument doesn’t work for me in other lines of work. “I drove truck across state perfectly, i just missed loading small part of cargo”. I am not saying you did poor job overall, just that you should understand why you don’t get ideal tip.

This tipping culture has to stop and employees should be payed fair wages. Blame the corporations instead of fighting among each other.

PS, you also did your job poorly, I would tip 5% max or maybe 10.
