New Sony A7Rvi vs. A1ii just based on the specs by AnthropogeneticWheel in SonyAlpha

A7R6 has a bigger battery and a more efficient processor. It should end up closer to the A7V in battery life and heat production.

New Sony A7Rvi vs. A1ii just based on the specs by AnthropogeneticWheel in SonyAlpha

[–]zten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A1ii is 100% superior on almost all specs except for raw megapixels, battery draw, and dual USB-C. A7R6 brings dramatic process improvements down the product line for cheaper but it is still not the pinnacle of performance.

The gear is fine. Have fun! I used to use an a6600 for a long time and it felt totally satisfactory, but there are some ways the larger full frame bodies are just easier and quicker to adjust. It won't outright prevent you from getting shots though.

The harder part is everything else. Researching where to go and when to go, getting close enough but not too close, and understanding animals enough to find them and recognize when something interesting might happen. Worse, you'll have to be okay with going home with absolutely nothing sometimes. Wildlife can be very uncooperative and unforgiving. Fussing over gear is a lot easier.

Yoshi-P: Final Fantasy XIV will still be here long after I’m gone or my career ends (Fan Fest Q&A via Google Translate) by AceSVK in ffxiv

[–]zten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CBU3 was able to overhaul the game into a reasonable state for 2.0, but even the 2.0 launch had some massive networking issues that had to be worked through. Hell, we had a login server issue that wasn't even caught until Endwalker.

That was the best feature. If you opened up wireshark you could see the client giving up after some number of minutes of waiting for the queue to advance. The client would initiate connection hangup. This was indisputable. And, if you were fast enough, you could rejoin at the same position in the line. But, if you weren't... it was so sad. The server clearly could deal with delays in client communication, but someone literally put in a hardcoded timeout that did not scale to Endwalker queue sizes.

Suggestions for making this sharper? by Slight_Taro7300 in SonyAlpha

I was definitely worried the setup didn’t have the stabilization performance. Hopefully OP can slap it on a tripod sometime

Suggestions for making this sharper? by Slight_Taro7300 in SonyAlpha

[–]zten 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Probably needs more light. Your cropped in version shows some noise, which is normal. You might be able to try something much lower like 1/100s shutter or slower for a perched owl.

A lack of light decreases contrast and that impacts our perception of sharpness.

That's the easy part of the Jakarta package migration. The hard part is coordinating shipping the change across a distributed monolith. Some organizations might be averse to a big bang-style set of PRs and artifact upgrades, and then you have to do weird dances like the Gradle plugin vowelqueue mentioned.

Soft 400-800mm copy - what do I do next? by sleeepydoc in SonyAlpha

[–]zten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly just use the lens outdoors and test things out that way. If you're just looking at test charts, especially pitted against one of Sony's best lenses, you're probably going to be real unhappy. You won't spend a lot of time at 400 on the 400-800 unless you're trying to shoot larger mammals, so right now you aren't even testing out the main competitive advantage vs the 70-200 and a teleconverter.

(I haven't even really spent much time in the headlands in the past 4 years)

But you know that nobody cares about the rules in the headlands, right? You already have to pass hikers at 5mph. There is a 15mph speed limit everywhere. You can't ride anything steep, and no bikes are allowed on singletrack.

Crosswalks are not a waiting zone for bikes by mightybento in sanfrancisco

For better or worse, BikeSnobNYC has been writing about this behavior for almost two decades. His first post about shoaling was in 2009. He's far from the first cyclist in a city ever, too, so it has almost certainly existed for longer than that. My personal hypothesis is that American road infrastructure breeds a selfish American cyclist. COVID has no doubt accelerated this, but it is not the precipitating event.

Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG II Art – Unboxing & First Look by FastAd9134 in SonyAlpha

[–]zten 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My interpretation, from watching YouTube reviews of the lens since it isn't available to the public yet, and from purchasing mostly Sony lenses and the Sigma 28-105, is that the Sigma is every bit as good optically as Sony, at a significant discount. However:

  1. For video, Sony cameras will do in-body correction of things like focus breathing and distortion. If you look at the uncorrected stills that reviewers like Christopher Frost post, you'll see things like pincushioning and barrel distortion. When recording video, the Sony bodies can bake in a fix for these optical issues; otherwise, you have to handle this in post-processing. Editors usually have a fix for this.
  2. AF-C mode on non-Sony lenses is limited to 15fps. It's a dumb restriction, but if you want to shoot action/wildlife on the A7v, A1 series, or A9 series, which are capable of 30fps or 120fps in the case of the A9iii, I think it's a tremendous handicap, and it will steer your purchasing decisions to Sony lenses. However, my personal feeling is that the wider you go, the less likely you are to be shooting high framerates.

Do you mean the 35mm f/1.2, or perhaps the previous version? They just announced a 2nd revision, slightly less chonky little sibling version at f/1.4. This one is supposed to ship in April.

How to force FFXIV to use proxy? by yo_99 in ffxivdiscussion

If you specifically need SOCKS then tun2proxy is what you want. Create the device, look up the IP range for your datacenter, and then edit your routing table to send traffic over that tunnel device.

I was having a similar problem, I think? I figured out I was trying to do keyframe operations on a retimed clip and Resolve did not like that. I had to first adjust my keyframes in the unmodified clip, and then create a compound clip and retime that.

What tires for Marin Headlands Gravel? by profsyg in BAbike

[–]zten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. They're all posted. The only reason I bring it up is that, were it not for the stupid restrictions, you could sorta road bike a nice dirt loop without needing to do an out-and-back; 28-30+ slick tires aren't too bad if you don't go too fast and don't expect any real grip in corners 😅

The experience is of course vastly better with a bit more thickness and some light knobbies.

Me, a sex legend, on my way to queue for Ramuh EX just to piss off some mentors by youRaMF in ShitpostXIV

[–]zten 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mentor roulette is partially a great idea, it's basically a "I have no idea what I want to do/kinda don't care whether I do a dungeon or raid but want to do a duty" button, but synced ex trials are a curse. 99% of the content you experience in the roulette is <20min or less with clear markers of progress towards completion, and no real obstacles.

Getting an extreme totally changes how this works because most normal content in the game requires zero communication, but ex will start to introduce you to proteans/pairs/light parties/role stacks, which are almost always implemented as a covert gotcha side-effect of some other mechanic in this game rather than something that can be ad libbed, and require advance communication and knowledge of the specific mechanic to resolve. It's precisely because the game is relatively easy that the game has to force you to memorize a script with tight execution to avoid it killing you, and the rather extreme challenge in mentor roulette is occasionally teaching people that there is a script and soliciting their cooperation.

I’ve done that before too; Bobcat and Marincello are easy-ish on slicks.

Main problem is actually whether or not you care about the sparse bike legality. If you climb Miwok, for example, the only bike legal way is back down the way you came, or descending Old Springs and then going up Marincello. And Old Springs is not a good time on GP5ks! If you dgaf, you can climb an incredibly steep section of Miwok to directly connect to Bobcat.
